Determining Quality - Social Media VS Blogging Site

in #steemit6 years ago

There is much debate about quality and what it is. It is an impossible question to answer as everyone has a different opinion. Take length for example. If the post is longer is shows the person might have put a lot of work into it but on the other side good writing is brevity and shorter posts might be better. Are photos enough? What about poems? Memes? We can argue all day and everyone has a different opinion but there is one factor I want to bring in. Is it a blog or a social media post? The difference matters.

If we are talking about social media quality is determined by the masses. It is a 'social' site and thus by definition what is the most social becomes the highest quality. This can be a meme or a photo. Whatever it is, you cannot argue the popularity of it and thus, in this world, it is of 'quality'. In order to get there we will need to have a democratic site to determine what is popular.

On the other hand a blog has certain aspects it needs to deliver on. This includes length and ideas. To me a blog is a way of expressing an idea, a news story or a more personal story. I think a story itself can also be a blog. But again quality is still hard to determine but it rules out small posts and memes.

Now the reason I mention this is that steemit is currently in the middle and this is causing some confusion for new users. There are people who think it is a blog site and then upset when social posts get a lot of money. And those in the opposite camp. I think, going forward we need to decide the type of site steemit is to help with quality.

I think the issue is the people that interact with Steem through either busy.org or steemit.com feel it should be a blogging site.
(no issue's there)

The issue comes from the people interacting with Steem soley through steepshot or dmania. Let's take steepshot as a point right now. People posting through steepshot are basically posting photos and interacting with each other as a social site.

However the Steepshot and dmania posts show up in the Steemit.com and busy.org users feeds. This is what causes the outrage. If we could just let them filter out this content than I feel the Steem blockchain could be a blogging site to some and a social site to others.

This is how i see the issue.

Great point with the different interfaces.

You are right that we are in between and we should be both. It is not hard to improve some things that we miss. I had an article 10 days ago about what would I improve on Steemit: https://steemit.com/steem/@cicbar/steemit-improvments

hahaha funny but true.

you have just made a very valuable point dear geek. honestly you are right about steemit being in the middle of these two different sphere.

is steemit a blog website or a social media?

I have asked myself that question a lot of times because there are some days I see those who post shorter and less informative content earn very high rewards and also find myself on blog posts where I feel the content was really too long since many people are here just to earn their own money.

i think till further notice, steemit would remain this way..unless you have another idea

Steemit is a blogging site and to answer your question i think a blogging site works better for me because quality content is judged by a whole lot of qualifications like quality photography and post. But on the other hand it also is a social media platform because it also promotes interactions between different parties. Waw am confused.

lol see its not easy :p

Very good thinking.

is quite right about how to make a blog and because there are new users with confusion at the time of uploading a blog

In my opinion, steemit is a site for engaging content, whether that be a blog post, video or audio.

Photos and memes seem to just clutter up the feeds with low effort posts while good quality content becomes harder to find as you have to dig a lot deeper to get to the good stuff.

That being said, I think as Steemit evolves it will create topical communities that encourage more social interaction.

All in all, I get a sense that steemit is trying to be the front page of crypto and digital currency news.

It also happens to support memes, art and blogs in a pretty equally mixed fashion.

The fact that steemit leans towards cheap and ephemeral content doesn't help the blog argument.

The fact that steemit encourages connection and community weakens the meme arguement.

So, only time, or communities, may tell.

lol honestly I believed that one thing complemented the other but now I am more confused
