PSA: Take Caution When Posting - Sometimes They Disappear

in #steemit7 years ago

Two weeks ago, I put together a blog post for Steemit and it went POOF, lost in the ether after I hit post. That stunk, I had put over an hour into the post and now I was trying to recreate it from memory. It's never as good the second time around. Today I've seen a couple of other guys pointing out that the same phenomenon has occurred to them.

@meesterboom lost his first attempt with this post: https://steemit.com/life/@meesterboom/salted-caramel-rye-and-peachy-beers

@everittdmickey has been doing a little investigating:

And I wrote about losing the aforementioned post two weeks ago:

A word to the wise, this problem appears to not be that rare an occurrence

The blog post I wrote regarding my post disappearing received some great advice as to how-to combat this phenomena. Here's some tips from from some knowledgeable steemiams:

@steemtruth wrote this:

"That happened to me once, not good. I write my posts in a text editor file and save the file. When I'm finished I copy and paste the content and paste it into the steemit editor. I tweak it in the editor and copy the content back to the text file so that I keep them synched. My text file is my backup and most important file. I used to use this online editor but now that I'm proficient in markdown I no longer use it. https://markable.in/editor/"

@raymondspeaks had this advice:

"Okay dude. Here's what I do. I write my post into submit box. Then I paste it into word and proof-read it, and after the I put it into notepad to rid myself of the nasty formatting, and then I paste it back. If I lose it I still have two copies. Try that next time :)"

@writingamigo had this to say:

"I lost one post that I was writing for an hour today. Had to re-write it all. Really sucks. Always make a copy, I guess... Steemit cannot handle all the traffic."

Please be aware that this is an ongoing problem on Steemit. It really stinks to lose hard work and the time needed to recreate your content. I personally have continued to write my blog posts in markdown and copy - paste to Word when I feel it's complete. You could do the same with wordpress or notepad, any which way, just do it.

Quality content is a terrible thing to waste - protect your work before posting!

I've had this happen too--Ugh! I try to look on the bright side though and tell myself that perhaps there will be a better time to launch the post.
Now I compose all posts in Word or Textedit and save them. Thanks for posting on this topic, hopefully it will spare some fellow Steemers a lot of aggravation.

I know it's one more step, but it is absolutely worth it @eveofthestorm. Even writing a "quick" post takes time with the formatting and adding images, etc.. Don't want to lose content.

Yes, even the so-called "quick" posts we need to take this step with. Thanks.

This is good to know, thanks for the information

Thanks for reading @sophistryproof.

Happened to me just this morning after spending a couple hours working on a post. Haven't been able to muster up the energy to start from scratch and rewrite it yet. Lesson learned!

Sorry to hear that @sthomestead. It seems to be occurring more frequently with the growth in traffic.

Thank you for this valuable advice! Will definitely use backup when writing my first post! ;)
Think Lastpass secure notes will be my choice as that is more secure and also available wherever I am.
