Just a quick question. Should I be upvoting my own Posts and comments??
I recently noticed while reading the comments of a post that the author was upvoting their own comments. The author in question has a very high rep and has been here a very long time so that may make a difference to your thinking on the matter but the reward they were giving themselves for commenting on their own post was, in my opinion, pretty substantial and many, many times more than the average user could possibly have rewarded the post or comment. If this is standard practice then fair play but personally I don't understand the logic in this. If there is anyone who could explain to me why this is an acceptable practice then please help me to understand.
I upvote my own posts because it is set to do this automatically and I haven't felt the need to change it since my upvote is worth about 6 cents since the recent hardfork, which is nothing in the grand scheme of things but is it good practice to upvote your own comments??
Please let me know your thoughts in the comments section!
I think that there is nothing wrong with someone upvoting his/her own post or comment. It totally depends upon the person whether he wants to upvote himself or not. Sometimes people do upvote themselves only to make their comment appear above others. This totally depends
I'm not sure I agree with you completely @nikita.adroit! There may be justification for upvoting your own comment at times but this does not mean that it should be regularly and certainly not all the time as some are doing.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Hope your day is going well!
If somebody is actually doing it. For example is upvoting all his/her posts, what is wrong with it? I mean, he is not getting anything for free. He must have worked so hard to get to the position where he is now. And then if he is upvoting his pos
How did you manage to get 10 votes for this comment @nikita.adroit? I'm curious as none of the other comments for this post have anywhere near as many votes as that?
Thanks for the comment @nextlevelslayer! If that is the case then please forgive my ignorance. I'm not sure if I subscribe to that way of thinking though. :)
Hope you are having an excellent day and thanks again!
I was someone really insecure about likes on facebook, i never knew when to like and when not to like,
it seems like the best bet is to upvote yourself atleast a couple times a day, but if your strategic about your upvotes you can make alot more upvoting other content I think
That may be so when your upvote is worth a few cents like myself but what about when you are upvoting your own comments to the tune of £50 or $100 dollars a time on your own posts that are being rewarded anyway? Isn't it just greed? I may be wrong but that is why I have asked the question! :)
yeah bro, im good thanks, hope your well as always ^_^
in a sense it kind of goes against the concept in my opinion, I feel like there was already a financial incentive to vote others up, though even if you were to take away self voting a whale could dilute into several accounts and trail themselves, its a bit hard to govern I think
have you seen those comment trails that are like, "nice post" 14 votes and the post has 3 votes? xD
i imagine as more people enter the reward pool will shrink but i wonder what the rewards will look like then?
yeah that was a good one man thanks xD
i think its a pretty commonly held belief man, though you know what, we need to look for ways to add more value to the system, I am curious actually why the system isnt really looking for anyway to monetize itself, like why not display ads based on keywords of blog titles and tags, then it generates reward pool, its a concept i havent heard about but maybe its because its taboo xD
I'm not sure advertising would be a good idea. I don't know much about the way things work but I don't think it would lead to good things if steemit went in that direction. I'm sure there will be posts out there covering the pros and cons of such an idea but you could always do a post asking the question yourself and see what kind of response you get.
I agree with @son-of-satire for the most part, especially right now when voting power takes forever to recoup and every vote counts.
There may be occasions such as Linda spoke about where you feel a comment should be seen, and honestly I don't judge others for choosing to do it, but I just want to make sure I have the maximum amount to give others.
That being said, I've left the upvote on my posts, it's the one allowance I give myself :)
I am not in the position that some others are in so maybe I would have a different outlook but I really don't think my opinion would change if that was the case.
I understand the reasons that Linda gave but then again that just means that those with the most power will always be able to make their voices and opinions heard. I struggle with this because perhaps this can be a good thing, especially in Linda's case.
The real problem is people voting on their own comments simply for the financial reward. You are one of the most positive users regarding steemit and the community here @dreemit and while all the positives you talk about do really exist here, there are many negatives that have to be addressed.
There are many in the real world who are taking advantage of the system that has been set up to the detriment of everyone else. At the moment I don't see any difference here. Perhaps it will never be different and was never intended to be. If that's the case then maybe we need to stop shouting about how great this place is and accept that it's no different from the real world.
Haha! Of course there are similarities to the real world and with that comes negative aspects. The reason I think this place is so great is that I've been connecting with people from all over the world that I would never have met otherwise. You for example, I would not have met you. And there are a great many like-minded individuals here. But of course there are also the greedy, whenever money is involved the greedy will come. I just prefer to ignore them unless I'm presented with a practical way of dealing with it :)
That is the tag on my page if you did not know! :) And I do get by with a little help from my friends but should I be getting by with a little help from myself at the expense of my friends?? :)
Thanks for the comment @argentus. Do you think that if your upvote was worth say $50 you should be upvoting your own comments given that by doing so you are taking $50 out of the reward pool? And should you be upvoting your own replies to the comments made on your own posts, which you are already being rewarded for?
Haven't really thought about it till now.
However.. The way I understand that it works is.. You get a certain amount of the steem that is given to everyone every day, so.. Might as well use as much of it as you can each day, and if you're like me and spend more time creating content than viewing others content.. I think it makes sense for me to boost my own articles before I boost other peoples.
But.. I will consider it more in the future as I never even really thought about it, thanks for bringing the thought to my mind.
No problem @apolymask. A nice surprise to see a comment from you. I read a couple of your posts yesterday I think but didn't bother commenting as I know you're a busy man. One of them was a photo of your fathers that you posted looks like it was taken in a canyon or something similar. You live in a beautiful part of the world my friend!
Theres been a lot of talk about the self voting thing. Lots of people upvoting their own comments and such. Some of the rewards people are getting for upvoting their own comments is crazy. I saw one guy upvote his own comments on his own post twice and got over a hundred dollars for it. Not much of a big deal when its me or you getting a few cents but when youre able to reward yourself that much for a couple of shitty comments something isn't right!
Hope your doing well buddy. It's good to hear from you and need to check out some of your etymology posts. Been really busy lately myself and not had much time to catch up on all the posts I want to. :(
You live in a beautiful part of the world my friend!
Indeed! It just gets really hot here sometimes. ._. That's my only complaint.
I saw one guy upvote his own comments on his own post twice and got over a hundred dollars for it.
That does seem pretty ridiculous, I can see why people would be annoyed.
I still haven't fully formed my opinion on the subject but I've been trying to post without self voting for a while and it seems to be working fine. I don't notice a big difference and wouldn't mind if they just removed the ability to vote for yourself.
Hope your doing well buddy. It's good to hear from you
Word! same to you! Sometimes it takes me a while to get back to these.. 6 days on this one, heh.. But I try to get back to all the messages and yours are some of the ones I appreciate the most! Cheers! Hope you're doing well!
Of course you should if you want to do it and if the system allows you to do it.
The more complete question, as you already mentioned in the comments, is if you should upvote yourself when your upvote translates into a high amount. Nobody really cares if your upvote has a 5 cents value and you're upvoting yourself.
Now, we're getting into a more philosophical discussion and in a subjective field of ideas. Because, who gets to decide at what value of upvote one would be required to stop upvoting oneself? Steemit Inc.? The majority of the community? Is this a democracy type of thing or a decentralized one? Should anybody get to decide on this issue?
Also, look, some people when they reach a high level of wealth in the offline world, give a lot of the money back to their communities through whatever methods. And some people, don't. Some people take most of the profits and reinvest it into making more money for them. Should we get to vote or decide how these people should use their earned money and through which means?
Excellent comment my friend and your points are duly noted. There seems to be a lot of discussion around this question. If you are interested there are two really good posts by @dwinblood and @tarazkp among others that touch on the subject.
I upvote my post so that at least there is one upvote. But I must say I had to get used to upvoting my blogpost. lol. Still sometimes
I think of not upvoting my own post.
I don't know what to think about upvoting my own comments. I never did that.
I never took notice of people upvoting their own replies, I've seen it here and there, but wasn't really aware of it.......till now
I guess it depends on the situation and the amount of the vote.
I don't upvote my own comment very often,
but I often put a lot of time and effort in a comment, trying to help other users or give valuable information,
so if I see that 3 or 4 other people also upvoted and appreciated my comment, than I may give myself a small vote too for that comment.
And occasionally, I feel that my comment needs to be near the top of the comments so that more people will see it, so I vote it up high enough that more people will see it.
In the cases where I am voting on my own comment, I have usually thrown out a lot of votes for other people's comments on the same post too. They are all getting money but not me if I don't vote for myself occasionally ... lol
I would never throw out a quick comment that provides little value and upvote my own comment.
I understand the need to upvote your comment to get it near the top and have seen your posts @canadian-coconut, everyone gets an upvote from you. you are very generous with your votes and always reward a good comment but there are some who are upvoting the comments on their own posts that do not warrant it. I saw two upvotes by an author worth over $50 dollars each and they were the only upvotes for both comments and both comments were unworthy of any reward in my opinion. We all enjoy being rewarded but there are some people who are really abusing their position and I personally don't think it's right. Most users are lucky if they have ever made a $50 dollar post let alone have the ability to reward their own comments in this way but it would appear that there are many who can't wait to be in the position of doing the same for themselves.
There seems to be as many people here to abuse the system as there are honest, genuine people who love the platform for what it is and treat it fairly.
Did you happen to see the post by @mobbs today? It might interest you! :)
I'm not much of a fan of self voting, especially when excessive, but I think it's up to everyone to decide for themself what they want to use their voting power on. I tend to check a comment before I upvote to see if the author has upvoted themself, and if they have I don't give my own. But, I don't attack them for it, as I do believe it's their choice. Just as it is mine to withhold my own upon that realisation.
I have given this some thought though, and there are circumstances where I could understand someone doing such a thing. For example. some people have invested a lot of money into STEEM, including one guy on here who claimed to have invested his life savings into STEEM.
If someone has done this, and feels they have lost money because of the drop in value of STEEM, or even if someone has simply lost faith in their investment for whatever reason, then they may be inclined to upvote their own comments, or take whatever steps necessary to regain what they have put in.
This is just one example, but there are a few I can think of where I might too find myself upvoting my own comments. For now, however, I haven't the need to do so, and won't. But I think we should leave everyone to make up their own mind simply because why should any of us have the right to tell another one of us not to without knowing the entirety of their reasoning for doing so.
As someone else said, if it was banned, people could just make alternate accounts and go around upvoting their own comments anyway. Best that we don't try enforce anything, and just lead by example, and hope that as many as possible follow.
The last time you were around, that I'm aware of, was the day of the hardfork, haha, that was a lot of fun....and then I found out that the catch to the higher votes was that voting power takes no time to drain and FOREVER to refill.
I've been trying to figure out the best way ever since, wanting to give good rewards, but not wanting to only be able to do it for five people a day! ugh! Right now I'm experimenting with giving a few people a high percentage, the majority of people fifty percent and then a handful at a small percentage.
Paint me a picture of what you do with your time that keeps you away for so long. You are depriving this place of your essence Scott ;)
I wish I could give you an answer that would satisfy you, but I do not think I'm able to.
You should be aware though, that steemitchat has not worked for me in a very long time. So if you have messaged me on there, I have not yet had a chance to reply. But, I did just buy a new computer, so I will have a check later if it is working on this one.
If not, it will have to be a migration to discord.
I hope you are well. This is probably getting old, but I won't be about for at least a few more days. I am 114 hours into a water fast, and though the last 48 have been awful, I am determined to make it to at least 7 days, hopefully 10.
I will speak to you when it is over, and I expect that I will have quite a story to tell.
10 days...shit. The longest I ever went was 72 consecutive hours. Then a break where I ate about 1200 calories for two days then another 72, then break for three days then 48, a pattern I kept up for a month every four months for several years. However the last time I did it was torture (about three years) ago, and I've been thinking of doing it again but haven't quite worked myself up to it. But ten days...have you watched the Stand? Are you pulling a Mother Abigail in order to get some answers from a Higher power?(I would have asked if you've read the Stand...but I recall you not reading books lol)
I'm not sure how you had the energy to even write to me after 114 hours of fasting. Despite the shit I give you, there's no answer you need to give to satisfy me. You imprinted on me luv, nothing will change that, and just the effort you made here is more than enough. I'm not sure why you are pushing yourself for ten days, but I hope you don't hurt yourself in the process, I'll set my intent to give you strength and I greatly look forward to the story :)
I didn't make it to ten days. I stopped after five. Kept hearing that for a first fast you really shouldn't push it because your liver probably hasn't adapted to using ketones instead of sugar for energy yet.
I lost a stone in weight in that time though, even after putting back on my water-weight. I need to try and put that back on now so I can get a longer one on the go.
In truth, I think I may have broken the fast too early. I allowed myself to be convinced that it was too dangerous to proceed, probably because all my family kept saying I should too.. But I actually felt worse after I ate, and it took me two days to get the feeling of weakness to leave me.
Next time I should not set a time frame and just wait until my body tells me it is genuinely fucking hungry.
I can 'understand' this but I'm not sure that I agree with it.
Best that we don't try enforce anything, and just lead by example, and hope that as many as possible follow.
I can agree with this, with the full knowledge that many will not follow the example set.
I think that there is nothing wrong with someone upvoting his/her own post or comment. It totally depends upon the person whether he wants to upvote himself or not. Sometimes people do upvote themselves only to make their comment appear above others. This totally depends

OK. Thanks for letting me know.
what is esteem are there any other competitors? ive been looking for a steem app
Yes you should. You earn from it. It is not looked at as unethical at all here on this platform.

I haven't ever heard of the Stand? What is that?
I can 'understand' this but I'm not sure that I agree with it.
I can agree with this, with the full knowledge that many will not follow the example set.
