Steemit.com Development Updates - Active GitHub Issues
Here is the latest the latest news about what the Steemit dev team is working on. There have been several updates in GitHub since my last post!
Reminder - these are changes are being considered as well as being worked on. There is no guarantee that all of these will actually be implemented and put up on to the site! It does give you a good idea of what they are up to though :)
Since a lot of the information is a carry-over from the previous post, I will use these tags to make it clear what has changed:
- [NEW] - This is a new issue that has been added to GitHub since the last report.
- [ADDED] - This is not a new issue in GitHub, but I have added it to the report.
- [UPDATE] - This issue has been updated since the last report.
- [NO CHANGE] - This is an issue that has had not changed since the last report.
Related Posts [NO CHANGE]
In GitHub Issue 66, they are planning to add a "Related Posts" feature, so that when you are viewing a post - the site will automatically recommend other posts that you might be interested in. The current design is to use the "hot" posts within the same category as the post being viewed.
Notifications [NO CHANGE]
GitHub Issue 72 is where they are discussing the addition of Notifications. They have acknowledged that this is part of their road-map, although indicated that it will take some time to implement.
WeChat Signup [UPDATE]
WeChat signup would allow most Chinese users to create a Steemit.com account using their WeChat account. (This is similar to what they allow for Facebook/Reddit.) GitHub Issue 86 is where this is being discussed. The hold-up right now is to try and figure out if there is a good enforcement mechanism to prevent bot registration.
[Update] There continues to be discussion on this issue/topic, although still nothing has been decided.
See All Tags [NO CHANGE]
Currently the tags lists only show the top tags. A lot of users would like to be able to see all tags. GitHub Issue 115 and GitHub Issue 116 is where this is being discussed, and it looks like they are planning to implement it.
User Profiles [NO CHANGE]
GitHub Issue 118 is where they are discussing the addition of user profiles (bio line, url, etc.). There have been a few updates to this within the past week, so maybe it is something they are planning to do soon :)
Schedule Post Time [ADDED]
GitHub Issue 147 is an enhancement request to allow users to schedule what time a post gets created. The dev team acknowledged the request about a month ago, but no updates have been made since. It seems like something they will eventually implement, but it is a lower priority feature.
Posting Rules Guide [NO CHANGE]
I am not 100% sure what GitHub Issue 153 will do, but it is going to add some type of help guide / dialog when people post, to help clarify the rules. The change has already been committed, so we should expect something related to this to show up soon!
Medium-like Editor Integration [UPDATE]
In GitHub Issue 185, the developers are talking about changes to the post editor. This would be a very useful change if they were able to make posting easier!
[Update] The dev team has started actually working on this! I don't know what to expect as far as the changes, or when they will actually be released - but it is exciting to see progress!!
Flag / Downvote Changes [UPDATE]
Changes to flagging/downvotes are being discussed in GitHub Issue 215. This issue is still in the discussion / design phase, so nothing is decided yet. The community and dev team are still trying to decide on the correct way to change things.
[Update] The discussion continues, but no huge progress.
Savings Account [NO CHANGE]
They are planning to add GUI support for transfers in and out of the savings account in GitHub Issue 223.
Translation Support [ADDED]
I glossed over this one last time because I couldn't understand what it was, but it looks like the dev team is spending a lot of time on this. GitHub Issue 233 will update the site to be able to present the UI in multiple languages, depending on the language setting of the browser accessing!
Block Button [NO CHANGE]
GitHub Issue 239 is where they are discussing the implementation of 'block' functionality from the Steemit UI. I know this is an important feature for several users. One of the developers assigned this to himself about a week ago, so it looks like there is some progress on this!
Show posts that are paying 100% in SP [NO CHANGE]
This is being worked on in GitHub Issue 261, and it sounds like it will be something they will add soon!
Allow users to create posts with zero payout [UPDATE]
This is being worked on in GitHub Issue 262. It sounds like something they are planning to add soon, but they need to make sure it works properly (with no unintended side effects) first.
[Update] The development team is continuing to work on this issue.
Specify Language for Post [ADDED]
GitHub Issue 300 is open for this. I don't see much progress on it, but I will continue to track it.
SMS Verification [ADDED]
This is another one that I glanced over last time, because I didn't understand what it was doing. It looks like the dev team is spending a lot of time on this though. It says they are adding support for something called "TeleSign" in GitHub Issue 304. I looked into what it was, and it looks like a way to do SMS verification!
Avatars! [NO CHANGE]
GitHub Issue 322 is where avatars are being discussed. It sounds like they have a possible solution in mind, but it hasn't been confirmed if it works yet.
Verifications Page [UPDATE]
GitHub Issue 355 was opened to add a verifications page using this post from @mynameisbrian as an example. This issue was opened up by @ned himself, so I suspect it will be given high priority :)
[Update] The dev team and community are still discussing the best way to implement this.
Display Resteem Count [ADDED]
It looks like this is going to be worked on in GitHub Issue 356.
Official FAQ [UPDATED]
The 'Official FAQ' looks like it is almost ready! @ned opened GitHub Issue 372 to add a link to it from the main menu, so I expect we will be seeing this soon!
[Update] A link to the finalized content was provided by @ned :)
Tip Button [NEW]
GitHub Issue 401 was opened to add a "tip" button to comments and posts. It looks like there is interest in this, so they might start working on it.
Updated Follow Button Location [NEW]
GitHub Issue 402 was added to create a more visible follow button, with the same style as the promote button, making it easier to follow user's instead of having to click the drop down menu from their name. It looks like this has been assigned to a developer.
Show Links to Authors Other Posts [NEW]
GitHub Issue 432 will update posts to show links to other active posts from the same author. It looks like someone has started to do some work on this!
This concludes the list of relevant issues that I found to report on. There were quite a few other updates to things that I figure most users would not care about (or even understand), so I excluded those. There are also a lot of feature requests that don't seem to be getting any attention at the moment - so I left those out as well.
If you are interested, you can view all of the open issues here:
https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com/issues
You can also create an account on GitHub if you are interested in adding issues of your own, or commenting on any of the existing issues!
Also, I do want to mention that I have applied to be a Steemit witness. If you want to read more about it, you can check out my witness application here. If you think I'd make a great witness, you can vote for me here :)
Thank you for this position update, love you steemit.
Thanks, some exciting developements ahead!
Still positive about steemit? Or maybe again?
As long as you see me posting, replying, curating and resteeming, it is still yes.
I bought more steem yesterday. You start losing you mind after 50. Watch out. Don't follow my steps.
Thanks for the advice, I'm getting close to that point. Aaaaaargh... ;-)
Steem Power gets you more SP every round. Only last time I did not Power up, but next time will do so again. Want to make it to 5K before end of october.
Think it proofs Abraham is closing in on me, hahaha.
I'd cross that line in January and believe it or not I changed my view on life and world. I pay more attention to food, health and I appreciate and try to better manage time, especially spare time. Not quiet sure how Abraham affect my brains. Check my wallet and learn- haha. You decide the effect.
Thank you, that actually helps me looking differently at turning half a century coming april.
And think I need to learn some more of your Abraham wisdom. ;-)
Thank you, god bless you good sir... I've been hoping someone would be vigilant about github. Me and all my alts will be voting you for witness. Upvoted and following now!
Awesome! Thank you, good sir :)
Going to feature you in my new post ! Awesome Informative Post here, Followed you!
Cool, thanks :)
I trust developers 1oo% and I don't have a clue what changes will bring. For me it's good news just to see new stuff coming out. That is sign that they live and breath with and for steemit. By the way - good report. Appreciate.
This is a very exciting list of updates and things to hope for and keep an eye out for launch on others. Now...how about an update on when Steemit might come out of beta?
Hehe, I don't think that we will know that bit of info until they are ready :) My guess is about 2 years though. (Total guess though.)
I'm confident that I'll still be around for that long...unless I get hit by a bus. I get all warm and fuzzy thinking about being a "pioneer".
That must have been some work... Thanks for sharing this, very interesting.
Welcome :)
Thank you for putting this list together! I feel like an idiot because a couple of months ago myself and others were griping about things like notifications and 100% Steem Power posts (wanting those features). I know they've done the last one and really the truth is if they are smart enough and dedicated enough to get things this far..they will likely take us all a lot farther as well. Glad to be a part of it.
Hehe, I know what you mean. You would probably be interested in checking out the Wish List too :) Its a little different than this post (they are not all things the developers are actively working on) - but it is a good picture of what the community has dreamt up as far as the list of Steemit features :)
Thank you for regularly going through the github and providing us all with easy to understand updates on each of the works in progress! :)
Welcome. I'm glad you are finding it helpful :) Thanks for the Resteem!!
Most of these look like good value add items. Though I wish the schedule feature was more of a priority as a frequent contributor. Thanks for sorting through it all.
