And then it also spams/overloads the blockchain, since every reward redemption is considered a "transaction" (is this the correct term?) which means it is saved on the blockchain in itself which increases overload/spam.

It probably seems backwards, but it actually takes load off the blockchain, because the uncollected transactions are done as virtual ops - which reduces the amount of calculations that must be done for consensus.

Assuming every reward is claimed individually, does it still take load off the blockchain, or is it efficient only as long as rewards are claimed in bunches?

The efficiency is gained when they are claimed in bunches.
