Tired of Spam Comments on SteemIt? Here's How To SolvesteemCreated with Sketch.

User @dunks comments:

I've been here a couple days and the insincerity is the first thing that stood out. There are people who share thoughtful comments and you can tell they're just trying to get a vote, but at least they put some time and effort into what they're saying.

The group that bugs me are basically e-beggars with lazy, low-effort "thank you for posting"-type content. It's like chicks fishing for compliments and attention on Insta, but instead of putting SOME work into a cute photo they just snap a pic of themselves laying in bed, messed up hair and face pushed back showing off the double chin.

I saw this too. On the same posts, there were an array of comments that said nothing of value, such as:

Thank you for this vlog

OH BOY!! I love the feeling of learning something new and exciting!! Thank you for the info and the dopamine rush!!

Merci Brian excellent.

nice bro

... and on and on and on ...

No value. Nice comments, but no value. Don't worry about all the work you've done to add value to this platform while these comments have done nothing - they "made" about a dime of steem/sbd each.

We can't stop people from abusing the system - this will happen. If we go around flagging everything we don't like, this may open us to vindictive actions, which is happening among some users at the moment and has turned into an all-out flame war. Also, using bandwidth doesn't help anyone. Here's a much better idea on comments which don't add value:

  1. Do not upvote or respond. Don't feed trolls. This is not always easy to spot at first. We've all responded to trolls.
  2. Mute them. If they become a problem, click on their username, and hit the option mute. Once muted, they won't appear anymore. WARNING TO ALL USERS: IF YOU BECOME A MUTED USER, EVEN IF YOU START TO CONTRIBUTE, YOU WILL BE BLOCKED BY MANY USERS. Think about that fact before you spam others. In time, this will encourage others to think about their actions - do they want to be permanently blocked? The best way to avoid this is by adding to the conversation.

I like the post, but the OP responds to too many spammers. This contributes to the problem. Don't respond. "Thank you and please follows!" are obvious spam. Mute them and move on. When I see people boast how much SteemIt is growing, it's worth considering that most of these users won't stick around, are probably bots, and add next to nothing in value. As people start to use the mute feature, I expect some of this problem to resolve, as people will realize they have to contribute or else they get blocked.

Also, follow the @cheetah account. Great account for spotting problems too.

Final point: you can do something about this (mute) or you can feed the trolls and contribute to the problem. The more people act against bots, the less we'll see them.

I've never muted anyone, but I tend not to reply to comments with no value. And still , the guys posting the this post rocks types of comments still deserve a second chance.

The are so many souls out there trying to still figure out what Steemit actually is. And in general many of them are less techie and native to contributing to a community. It's a process, it takes time to learn and YES - we are responsible for not replying them. It comes like a message to adapt and change.

Great example of a related comment with value. Some people may feel that giving someone a second chance is good and that's fair. There's too much spam for me and these comments prevent me from reading the thoughtful remarks and upvoting them or responding to them. But each person should mute as they see fit - it is one possible solution to this problem.

Nice pic..
Keep it up..
@cheetah

Interesting solution - I hardly mute anyone - sometimes I comment telling them to stop spamming - mostly I simply ignore them.
