List of Ideas on How to Improve Steemit
Quick "refund" option in wallet
The option should be available to reverse a transaction sent to your wallet instantly or with the need only to press one button then confirm with your key. Not only would this be quite useful as is, but it will ideal for when business on STEEM start to emerge in the near future.
Option to change username for 1SBD
I am guessing this one would require a bit more upheaval, but if the ability to change your username to any that were free at the time was available, and if to do so it cost 1SBD, then there would undoubtedly be a lot SBD's burned on changing usernames, which is better for the economy than them getting sold or converted to STEEM. A complete history of any user's previous account names would be available to everyone else.
Option to use SBD's directly to vote on posts
SBD's utility could be expanded upon if there was an option to upvote or downvote a post using SBD's. This would also give the community more power to flag abusive posts if the community is willing to spend SBD's teaching the lesson.
STEEM Powered loans
If someone has 10,000 STEEM, then they have 10,000 STEEM to use as collateral for a 10,000 STEEM Power Loan. And Steemit inc still has millions of STEEM that is supposed to be fairly distributed across the network. STEEM power loans would be both interest free and risk free, because whenever the user powered down, the loan would automatically go back to Steemit during the process. Users could use STEEM powered loans to grow their influence on the network, but sacrificing curation rewards on the STEEM used as collateral. Those curation rewards could then be used to bolster the reward pool to maximize the entire community's earnings. To be a viable option, however, the community would have to have the say on who was approved for loans. Not the community in the sense of the stake, as many interpret it, but the community in the sense of the people. Otherwise the biggest abusers would just get twice as able to abuse. I do not have the idea on how to accomplish that, but if someone else did, then STEEM power loans could be used a great way of empowering users who are actually invested in STEEM and Steemit.
Community Curators
We have witnesses who we vote for. Why can we not vote for community curators? Again, the voting can not be stake-based or it will just double the power of abusers, but if we can find a fair way to vote on community curators, then the top voted users could have automated delegations that increase their vote considerably. If the top curators were not doing their job well, then others would have the opportunity to vote for different ones. This, if done correctly, could be a way to guarantee that there will always be a few whales out there who have the community's best interests at heart.
Content Rearrangement
How can we solve the problem of visibility and the problem with shit content on the trending page in one move? Well, I imagine from a coding point of view it is likely not so simple. But, if we got rid of the trending page and brought back the active one, but made it so that whether it be a page view, a comment, an upvote or a resteem, whichever post last had some sort of activity will be at the top. Not only would this deal with the trending page being a ton of over valued posts all the time, and also help visibility for minnows and day old posts losing attention, but it would create yet another opportunity to burn SBDs. Pay 1 SBD and your post is boosted to the top. but if you try to boost it again it is now 2 SBD, and it keep doubling.
Feel free to share any of your own ideas, or to improve upon my own.
Create a new platform, clean slate, with no preminers, no incompetent management, no facebook based interface that is unscrollable, where every new joiner receives an equal initial quantity to start play with, and witnesses are only paid if they run full nodes that will also include the interface.
I would love to create a new platform. I have an excellent idea on how to minimize voting abuse and give everyone a fair chance of getting rewarded as long as their work is decent. But, it's not so easy to just start a platform. One needs a considerable amount of money to get the ball rolling.
Money rarely hurts, but in a decentralized platform the implementation falls on the witnesses/miners/uncles/masternodes.
They maintain or rent the hardware.
The question is, where will the programmers be paid from?
And the answer is:

Maybe an extra 20-100% over a regular joiner.

I had about twenty in my head before I started writing this, but fuck knows what happened to the rest of them.
I particularly like the idea of voting for community curators much like witnesses. Do you have any ideas on how the best curators could be picked without risk of abusers ending up in the position?
Replace the homepage with the Promoted page and actually give people a chance to promote themselves in a venue that is conducive to promoting and not in the obscure corner where it's been hardly visited. There's no single more sensible solution to boost the economy organically and it can have cataclysmic consequences on the abuse of vote selling as claiming that they are buying or selling votes for promotion won't be there anymore to hide behind.
