My Prediction: Steemit or Zappl

in #steemit7 years ago

I've been here on Steemit for a while now, and I've been active for a long enough period of time to see how things change and how those changes effect users -- and what that means for this platform and the people who use it.

HardFork19

The 19th hard fork was intended to level the playing field and spread the influence around.

However, based on what I've seen, it has had the opposite affect.

Channels of my size or smaller have seen increased power for voting but decreased payouts on posts per average; meanwhile the whales and bigger dolphins continue to have about the same results as before on their posts and their votes are largely unaffected because minnows are afraid to use their vote power for fear of depleting it too quickly.

This has led me to make a prediction about the future of Steemit.

Steemit for bloggers

It's clear that Steemit is an excellent place to make money as an independent blogger.

If you want to make good money writing articles and also desire the freedom to say whatever you want without a central authority censoring you, then Steemit is a great place to do that. The catch is: you must invest

To make a good regular income posting content on Steemit -- like @papa-pepper, @kevinwong, @stellabelle and others -- simply find a way to get your hands on 60,000 SP or more, either by earning it or buying STEEM, and you'll be able to make a regular income of $120/post.

When you think about it, it's not really an unfair system: if you intend to be a blogger for a living, then it would behoove you to take out a loan to buy STEEM to invest in your blogging career. Really, considering the job market out there, this isn't unfair, and I actually think we will see this sort of thing happening more and more as use-generated-token platforms continue to develop.

We will see modified crypto banks that will loan you SP and take interest off of your posts automatically via smart contracts. This is perhaps an application I will work on as I continue do learn coding.

I can see accounts that focus on curation (like @acidyo or @andrarchy) or other Whales being interested in such a lending system, as they would be able to directly support fledgling content creators who would be constantly creating content that earns good money and taking a percentage of that.

@zappl and similar apps for the rest of us

For those without money to spare and no means of gaining it in the foreseeable future, we can be happy using applications that allow us to micro-blog, stream, vine, share content, etc.

If you do not have the Steem Power that is needed to earn $100 or more per post, then it's going to be hard to justify writing up the kind of big articles or making the videos that are required to be a good blogger.

For you (me) apps like @zappl will be there to make our user experience more flexible and easy.

Because, honestly, if I am only able to make an average of $5 per post (which has been the case this week), then it's really not worth my time writing up lengthy articles (like the one you're reading) or doing extensive research (like with this post).

The user-base of Steemit is growing -- and fast. Thousands of new people are joining every day, which means that there is less in the reward pool to go around (unless you already have lots of SP). So people are going to have to change the way they look at Steemit if they don't have any money to invest in it.

Something like @zappl will not be innovative because it will allow people to make hundreds of dollars from their micro-blogs. Rather, it'll be innovative because it will allow normal users to make $5 for their micro-blogs.

I can see myself using @zappl in the same way I use Twitter, which would mean I'd post probably 10 - 15 times per day, casually from my phone while doing other things. And if I'm able to earn a few bucks from those posts, then @zappl will become my social media of choice.

The only thing that stands in the way of this prediction is if @zappl users start circle-jerking. That will kill the whole thing. @zapple must be used for actual, authentic micro-content, like memes and snarky quote-post-responses and vine-style videos and livestreaming and breaking news.

If that happens then I predict the schism of Steemit into bloggers who make money by investing in Steem Power as the top 5%, and casual users who abandon other social media for convenient apps they can use on their phone, like @zappl, consisting of the remaining 95%.

What are your thoughts?

Do you agree with my analysis and prediction?

Why, or why not?

Steemit is a great platform and im not gonna give it away for anything however if another programs come on with steem im going for it. I also think that people dont realize that what your saying is that potential for earning on zappl may be much higher right now than steemit. Just give me whatever to earn more steem amd ill be at it.

@zappl operates in addition to steemit, not as competition with it. :D

Hi @shayne i created an article about you, check it out if you can thanks

I don't know if your theory is true. It might be...

Myself, I stopped following you because you post too often. It doesn't mean I don't like your content anymore though. It was just filling up my feed.

With more and different types of platforms coming, this will certainly be resolved.

I think there is still a place for you to write lengthy articles and make money with it.

Let's see what the future brings...

I appreciate your remarks. :)

Curious... if you stopped following me, how did you come about this post?

Someone resteemed your post, I don't remember who.

I also still check your account once in a while, of course.

it's kinda like the old 'pull yourself up by the bootstraps' argument the republirats used to (and still) use, but how do you do that when you don't even have bootstraps? an age-old conundrum. it takes money to make money they say but when you only get enough to get by what then. i agree @zappl looks interesting for the 'casual' non-blogger/social media user that tired of making zuckerberg &co another billion from selling our eye space to vultures that want to pick over our carcasses like victorian rag merchants scrambling for the leavings of the landed gentry/aristocracy.

You incentivize the sharing of bootstraps.

I have an application I'm brainstorming that would allow people to take steem power loans and allow lenders to accumulate interest for lending. People would be able to borrow an amount of SP that would get their posts earning money, and in response the lenders would gain a percentage plus interest from the posts via smart contracts.

Just an idea, but there's always a market-based solution to these things -- we just have to be innovative!

IDKN about zappl, myself, I never really got into twitter, I just can't understand it. I mean for a famous person that does something else and you want to follow their life OK, but as a standalone thing it's stupid.

Twitter is a long-tail system. It's exactly as you say: a handful of movers or famous people, and the millions of people that follow them and argue with each other.

As for how it will be on @zappl, I cannot say, as we do not really have celebrities or movers on Steemit at this time.

That's why I think that a streaming video service for Steemit or @zapple would be a real game-changer: there are lots of independent journalists out there who do streaming content, and by running that service through the steem blockchain, they could make more money off of one stream than they ever thought possible.

Steemit is so much better than any social media out there!
:D

I've thought about investing more money into Steem because I believe it's worth the while. I want to just earn it, but you're right that reward pool is getting smaller relative to all the new users (me being one of them) I think good content will still win out here on Steemit, though I'm really excited for the opportunity @zappl will bring! Great post btw. Keep it up! Resteemed!

@chrissymchavvez well said!! Truly admire your point view.

I'm still quite new to this,so I don't really understand how the voting system works. I never heard of @zappi before, but it does sound like a good idea. I'm going to check it out, thank for sharing that information

I agree with @cryptotraderx that Steem could likely reach $100. But my fear is that user retention will be our biggest problem. People are lured in by the high dollar values they see on the trending page. But realistically, they will only earn pennies on their posts unless they invest a fortune to get their Steem Power way up. While getting paid pennies is much better than what FB pays, I believe the frustration will be too much for many new users, and they will ditch Steemit. I seem to be better off if I just don't look at the trending page. I try to be thankful for every payout, no matter how small it is. But that won't work for some people. Greed will lead to frustration and anger, then result in them leaving Steemit. I'm not sure what can be done about this problem. Maybe the value of each post shouldn't even be visible to others - only the author who created it.

the end of your post reminded me of yoda...

All so true, as a minnow like me, it's a struggle to make some money and I wish I have money to power myself up, it a viscous cycle of the rich getting richer. Fair? I guess life is not fair to begin with. So I'm guess happy to enjoy the sights and sound of my journey here, definitely not holding my breath while waiting for some miracle to happen but I'm still early in my journey so hope remains :)

I think steemit will hit 100$ in the next 2-3 years, its a great platform and I don't see why anyone would stop using it. I mean we would be using social media anyway, so why not get paid for it?

@cryptotrader yeah it can be easily touch up-to 200$ after 2,3 years
