▶️ DTube
▶️ IPFS
Sort:

Yeah, they use a mere 10% of the 25% to cover storage costs. I run my own IPFS node by now, so my videos play okay, but that makes the 25% quite pointless or at least a high price for a mere UI.

Yeah... so 2,5% of earnings are for storing, and 22,5% for using the upload and conversion servers. We don't use the conversion servers, we don't use the update servers since we used to do it with our own IPFS node.

So basically we are paying 25% for storing. Which is not working right now. But maybe it will eventually.

Same here except i keep running the daemon with my files pinned on my Pi, so the videos remain available...

Will there be a video on how to upload to SteemIt & Busy?

Just check out the latest video at https://busy.org/@semperenglish to see what I meant.

So you can't do anything for old Videos where the IPFS file has been taken down as it's not possible to rehost the same file under the same hash other than re-releasing it of-course?
Can you at least fix all other posts where the video is still up by retroactively making the own IPFS node at least one to host it before others have dropped it after uploading the video via d.tube?

In my opinion it would piss people of when re-publishing old videos every 4 weeks or so.

I agree but that's not what I suggested.

Well I just got somehow used to d.tube after I heard about it from you.

So with that move of you now a motivation for me to also dig into other steem platforms. At least that keeps me busy (unintended pun).

Your move is understandable as I noticed disappearing "old" videos already at other channels, but I had not found an explanation till now.
It's good to have someone (even better a witness) that's not only praising the good parts but also points out and discusses bad items that need improvement.

Agreed. It is possible to keep the videos up by pinning them on your own ipfs server, but then you can just as well add them to a steemit post (at least link, embedding is probably also possible?) without giving 25% to dtube. The whole point of dtube is that they keep them up - but they only use 10% of the 25% you give to them to keep them up, so 2.5%... If a real big youtuber comes over here, thats sufficient to keep it up for quite a while, but otherwise...

it would be interesting to see, how to enbed a ipfs.io links into the steemit-blog entry

what if you reupload your old videos?

As it looks right now I would have to reupload them every four weeks or so. I can imagine, that would upset all viewers who have already seen the old video. And of course... over time, It would add up to a lot of videos that have to be reposted.

Could you consider providing a YouTube link in the description, which viewers could take in case the video isn't running anymore?

It is not possible to add a link to a video that is more then seven days old. After seven days a blog-entry (surrounding the video) is written into the blockchain and can not be edited.

So its not possible for old videos.

It could be done for all new videos of course, but than we would have an embedded YouTube video under a D.Tube Video.

Most people would not understand.

sadly you are not able to edit older Uploads, so you can reuploud the Video via IPFS but you cant enter the new hash values into the original D Tube entry

If its the same file, its the same hash. Now, that might be different for whatever file the dtube uploader produces, but they dont use the uploader...

Just found: DTube videos work LONGER THAN 7 DAYS! https://busy.org/@tanbay/o8gujg3q

A workaround seems to be hosting your own IPFS node (along with the hosting costs).

Which defeats the point, then you can just as well just post the video on steemit instead.

Can you actually upload a video (its complete data) to steemit or only place a link to it (e.g. to youtube)?

I get your point that hosting (aka paying for) your own IPFS node defeats the point of paying d.tube by these 25% as d.tube actually not delivers on the video hosting for that payment.
But if you can live with that and e.g. just focus on potential upvotes from d.tube users instead that's at least a workaround. This means it's a technical option, without judging the current situation.

Well, in both cases, dtube and steemit, its just a link. If something is on the ipfs network which you dont need steem(it) or dtube for, you can at least link to it like so, you dont need dtube for that - and i think embedding a video directly into the post should also be possible though ive not dealt extensivly with html in order to know how exactly you embed a video file. Personaly i tended to watch sempers videos through the direct link (labled IPFS in the article) anyways and dtube is unneccessary for that.

Sad that you leave us, hope you come back quite soon! Best wishes to you guys.

Yes, it's some sort of sad, but I can understand them. They really put effort into their videos and it's disappointing if it doesn't work out as expected just because of technical stuff...
After all the troubles (ex) YouTubers have/had, you just wish for something that works out for you. Keep up the good work and see you on Steemit :-)
