The Real Problem With Steemit: The Quality Of Posts Is Low, Because The Quality Of Readers Is Low

in #steemit6 years ago

What's up gang?

"Nice posti, i like it so,plz follow back vote me for votes moon"

Let's shift the blame for a moment shall we? We keep saying that the authors are shit and they write dull, soulless posts to earn 50 cents so they can afford to feed their 15 kids. These are all true facts, but let's look what incentives a serious writer has to be active on Steemit.

The Average Reader Doesn't Read

  1. Why should he read anyway, when in order to get a reward he simply has to upvote randomly and leave comments like "Nice".

  2. And even if they upgrade their strategy and start writing more than 3 words, the hegemony of the circle jerk makes sure that the comment isn't "offensive", impolite or generally it doesn't disagree the message of the post. Just blow our dick or we will cut your head off.

  3. Lastly, most people simply don't understand english to the deegre that is required to write a quality post. Is it not true that the most active users are from foreign shithole countries? I know that's offensive to call another country a shithole, but please grow a spine. If your government steals your food, destroys your future and rapes your economy, why do you feel the need to defend it?

A platform where automative, generic responses are rewarded, the relationships cultivated are fake, due to the incentive to be nice and any depth of meaning is useless as it flies over most people's head.

DUDE, SIGN ME UP!

Why bother writing in-depth, meaningful posts, when they go unnoticed? You can just join a curation trail and just masturbate simultaneously!

"You hypocrite! You have written many posts yourself, why do you do it?"

As I said here, I don't regard Steemit as "another stream of income". It is a longterm investment.

I write daily. Why not post it anyway on Steemit and build an audience here?

Right now, I have 89 followers and my posts are carefully constructed in a way that shitty people don't follow me, comment or understand me. So I am blessed in a way. Imagine having 1k+ followers. I would be talking shit all day in my comment section.

Of course the problem isn't unique to Steemit. Everywhere you go the same thing happens (just go to celebrity Twitter), but here everything is on steroids because of the reward pool.

So, is there a way to fix that? Sure, stick around.

P.S- I have a bunch of quality posts for you to read, you won't even need to follow any other person on Steemit:

Sort:

Love it.

This is also why account based voting would be a disaster (shilling my quality post: https://steemit.com/steemit/@nealmcspadden/account-based-voting-is-a-terrible-idea-for-steem )

I was having an argument with someone who was saying that steemit basically can't be overtaken because there is so much community already built. My response was that there isn't enough community to be worth all that much yet - in large part because of exactly what you are saying here.

Huh, that account based voting seems like a change from capitalistic "meritocray" to socialist forced democracy.

Nice post ! xD
Hoping to get an upvote here :D

Joke aside, you're right in your analysis, and I felt exactly the same when I was writing in English. Since then I went back to French for my real posts (I keep following and commenting English writers / posts but I don't write in it anymore), I discovered a whole new Steemit.

I think this problem is really specific to the English posts on Steemit, as people (like me when I arrived here) think it's the best way to get visibility or at least potentially get read by the biggest number of people possible. But only a few of the readers speaks English sufficiently well to understand well-structured and profound posts, so it cancels (evens-out) the advantage of writing in English. So you get a lot of posts, the majority of them being poorly written, and no real audience to read them.

In the French community (I take it in example as it's mine), you see real relationships being built, real writers and real readers, upvoting and commenting each other (with real comments about the post, with debates and all the things that comes with real interactions). I don't know about other national communities, but I think English, being the most spoken language overall, is getting some negative blow-back due to its status.

That's good to hear man!

You seem to be able to write a coherent sentence, if not more than that, so if YOU felt that way, just imagine how bad it's out there.

Thanks, I might go back to writing in English in the future (as I estimate myself capable of writing a correct article if I spend some time on it), but not now, I still need to find my rhythm, the type of posts I want to make, and national community seems a much better place to do tests and experiments and all that, as it comes with a real audience and at least 10 to 30 people who will read my post from first to last letter, and a fraction of them commenting to give their opinion.
Of course you need to do the same, but that's the principle of community.

I know it's bad out there...
And I feel bad for English-native writers who are entering the Steemit game, they must feel desperately preaching in the desert.

I'm waiting for your way of fixing that !

Well, I am not a native speaker myself and I am writing better than most native speakers so that's that.

Sometimes you simply have to have a knack for it, but that's for another time.

The quality of people is low.

How do you propose to change that?

I say release some wild animals out in the city.

I was thinking world domination but I don’t think I have time for that. So what I would first do is remove warning labels from alcohol, tobacco and all electric appliances, that’ll surely get rid of at least half the population.

Getting burned to death beacause you dropped your bottle of gin on your stove, while you were smoking. Love it.

Hello there! I am from one of those shithole countries you mentioned 😂

I am glad you are smart enough to not be offended! Welcome.

No offence taken. It's the truth!

Wow your so racist! Congratulations your a scumbag

Come one havok, you can do better than that. Why am I racist?

(And it's you're* not your*)

ikr @redbeardguy. of all people i did not expect that to come from you @havok777. Would it make it less racist if i agreed with him as a "person of color" that shithole countries do exist, and really have nothing to do with race or culture as much of Europe now falls into that category. tbh id rather visit Venezuela or Zimbabwe at the moment than Germany or the UK

Yup. That's why I didn't **name ** any countries.
