Common Pitfalls ,blunders made on steemit and how to avoid them

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

This is what this post is about ,this is about me "a minnow" and many others like me ,we do mistakes plenty of them without realizing "where I was wrong" !
I will be focusing on these major pitfalls and how to overcome !

  1. Blind following /Mass following
  2. Not taking care of your Followers -
  3. Resteeming and upvoting without content reading
  4. Comments that arent heart felt
  5. Impatience ,too many posts, and errors
  6. Lack of confidence

▀▄▀▄▀▄ 1. Blind following - Mass following ▄▀▄▀▄▀

Lets focus on what these two terms mean
a.)🅑🅛🅘🅝🅓 🅕🅞🅛🅛🅞🅦🅘🅝🅖 :- When you follow someone cause you see he has a great Rep and his posts get a lot of earnings so he might
be a great add on to your shelf , and you dont care if your area of interests collide with him or not.
for example the person writes about cosmic activity and universe and your expertise is animals and photography !!
so when his post comes out on "string theory" your comment would be like "my cat loves to play with ball of string here is a photo of Mr.puddles I hope you like it" he bloody wont like it he will probably flag you for a spammer no good can ever come out of following blindly !

when you follow someone from your own field you grow together people start to notice you when you comment in there posts cause they know you too belong from the same field and an awesome way to build followers honest ones !

(b.) 🅜🅐🅢🅢 🅕🅞🅛🅛🅞🅦🅘🅝🅖:- well members of this community could be seen begging Follow for a Follow
you want to gain an insane amount of followers overnight ?? then go to any whales for example go to @firepower 's account
and look at number of people he is following let me save you the trouble ,

click on it and start following all the people without caring about their rep or field of blog !! If you follow that amount of people I am certain over night you can have more than 2k followers (cause majority are members of that follow for a follow community)

well here are three reasons why you shouldnt do it

  1. He is a Whale and you are not, he can probably post a photo of his ceiling fan and get 100$ upvotes
  2. you cant have your home screen filled with updates from so many people and expect to give time to each other
  3. Dead and ghost followers

No need to be alarmed its a terminology used to for people who have either not been active on steemit or have been staying away from your blogs ! you went for a mass following and you got some followers back, but did you expect loyalty from them ?? no they probably have followed more people than you did ! they can never help you to lift up and engage in a conversation or will never even open any of your blog
let me explain it with a beautiful website http://www.steemspectacles.com designed gracefully with love and steem by @pilcrow and @sjennon

I have a friend here on steemit @chapterclosed he gets his fair share of upvotes on steemit but he has 1200 followers yet he gets only 20 upvotes on an average lets look at his profile on http://www.steemspectacles.com

what the ?? out of 1223 followers 1117 followers dont engage with him and rest around 350 have been inactive on steemit !!

this could be really demoralizing for someone to have only 20 views on your blog to which you gave your whole day to despite having 1200 followers ! but we know @chapterclosed he manages finely ! and constantly provides us with great song lyrics !!
and he is about to make it to 51 rep .....!

So if you want an honest following who really appreciate your content ,cause numbers matter as long as they are real !

Good post Preeti! It would be hilarious to get $100 for a picture of my ceiling fan! I'll give it a shot anyways in @sjennon's comment below.

Coming to your points other than checking the blockchain explorer or your follower list every day for a new follower there's no way to tell if someone is following you or not. No notification. Even in the blockchain explorer steemd.com if I remember correctly it won't show you if someone is following you. Steemdb.com does display this info correctly. Many users are not very aware of using the various tools available to us in terms of checking our account activity.

Ultimately we seek 3 things here- upvotes, comments and views on our posts and frankly the number of followers you have at this point doesn't mean much. You could have accounts voting your content without ever hitting the follow button!

You will see me upvoting and commenting throughout the day as I check and curate content. This has given me a great boost in terms of increasing my follower base. Because for a few months until May when I wasnt writing but only curating content, I had 600 followers and I was following 3000 excellent accounts for everyday curation and it was largely constant. Now I adopt a different strategy for finding content for upvoting.

Couple of months ago I had two trending posts in a row and I gained ~600 followers overnight in addition to regular posts on trending. Which bumped up my number closer to 5-6K range and I wasnt following many users at that point.

So recently I decided to test this out and I followed a large number of accounts to see if this: increases my numbers, results in greater number of uopvotes, views, comments etc and this little experiment has revealed there are issues in the system with respect to engagement. I've informed HQ on what I think are the issues and they are working on improving engagement. But this activity doesnt frankly add the majority of followers to my account. I get a boost with every post I write that goes trending.

Then there is the issue around dead followers and ghost followers for sure. @sjennon's app is certainly useful in figuring these out.

I have seen your work @firepower you work so hard in promoting and making sure the growths of minnows your "ceiling fan" should be worth more than 100$ and thanks for explaining that 80k people you have been following......and did you read @sjenon comment it should be "engage for a engage" not follow for follow

why the hell people dont use those handy things thats available to them (lazziness might be the answer" my last post was about "encouraging people to read markdown guide" the very basic thing that everyone should use in there blogs.. by the way what say ?i make a post out of your fan and give it a run if it really goes out for 100$ or not :D

and also there should be a feature that tells you how many people and which ones have resteemed your post ! you can never know it unless the person does not types in . "RESTEEMED" !!

Currently you can check these details at steemdb.com. Put your username and explore the data. All these things will be fixed moving forward and the notification system will improve as well.

Sub-communities feature which when launched will improve the engagement with the posts as will having a few million users on this platform. But ofcourse everyone will have more people to compete with for sure.

Oh, feel free to make a post out of the fan! hahaha!

Both your posts, this and the markdown one were good btw! I really like the way you make your post headings. very creative!

Btw, check out https://steemit.chat/ sometime. There are two channels for Indian users 1 for general chat and a second one for postpromo. Holla if you get there. Cheers! :)

Also, were working on getting this implemented on Spectacles ;)

He is a Whale and you are not, he can probably post a photo of his ceiling fan and get 100$ upvotes

This got me laughing way too hard! I seriously challenge @firepower to actually upload a picture of his ceiling fan.

It is true though. Just because you have followers, do not mean they are engaging. The data proved that only about 10%-20% actually engage with you. This also means that you need to engage with them aswell. It's like engage for engage instead follow for follow.

Also, thank you so much for the mention of @spectacles! We appreciate it <3

Worth $100 LOL!

@sjennon I just need to get another $99.54 now.

I will help you out raising the rest of it !!

you guys have done a wonderful job ! I mean if we ever had a preamble for steemit I am sure it shall be written by you guys ! and that line engage for engage wow that should be the title of that preamble , oh i would love to see if he engages to the challenge !!:)

well thanks for making me infamous !! I have read many posts regarding avoiding this mistake but it was never explained in this simple words ! by the way cant wait for your next two parts !! RESTEEMED

hahaha come on we both knew you felt disheartened after getting just 20 views in your every blog !! and thanks for letting me use your account ...there could not have been any more perfect account for the example !!

yeah but the remaining ones were good people , and nice to see you grow to rep46 in mere 3 blogs . and with the growing rep your insight is getting deep too !!
