Books on the Steem!

The Steemdle is an eBook Reader with similar functionality and hardware specs as other devices in the market such as the Kindle Paperwhite or the Nook GlowLight.

The main difference - which makes this device unique - is that, whereas with the Paperwhite, the Nook and all other famous eBook Readers, you have to buy your books in their respective stores, with the Steemdle, you get paid for reading them.

The Steemdle is based on Steem, an open source blockchain - distributed - database that supports community building and social interaction with cryptocurrency rewards (to read more about the platform, refer to this Paper or to this FAQ).

Using the same mechanism as websites such as

steemit.com / www.steemit.com
, the Steemdle rewards users who actively help quantifying the quality of the books. This active readers, also called "curators", are key to filter and classify the always growing library.

The book author will be proportionally rewarded depending on the number - and weight - of the votes. The more popular a book becomes, the more he gets paid.

How to write books

Writing a book for the Steemdle is as straightforward as posting an article using steemit.com. There is thought a few constrains:

  1. The book's first tag has to be the word: "steemdle_book"
  2. The second tag will be the category. It has to be chosen from the following list of tags: arts, business, children, comics , computers, education, engineering , fantasy, health, languages, history, humor, law, literature, medical, mistery, non_ficction, outdoors, parenting, politics, reference, religion, romance, science, science_fiction, self_help, sports, teen, travel
  3. It must have a length of at least 7000 words.
  4. It must containt at least one photo, to be used as book cover.

It is also possible to write books which are just compilations of exiting articles

  1. The compilation is basically only one article, with the word "steemdle_compilation" as first tag and the category as second tag.
  2. This article will only contain list of links to other articles - writen or not by the same author - and a thumbnail.

Reading a compilation will be like reading a book, where every chapter is a post in the steem blockchain - which can also be written/voted by different users if required.
In this case, the reader can up-vote and write comments at the end of every chapter. Consecuently the rewarded amount of SD appearing below the thumbnail picture of the book's cover while browsing the library, is actually the sum of the rewards of all linked chapters.

Let's have a deeper look at the interface.

Browsing the Steemdle Library

After powering-on the device for the first time and having configured its internet connection, you are asked to enter a valid Steem account or to register for a new one.

You are then forwarded to the default home screen: the Steemdle Library, a list of the most voted books of all time listed in order of importance. The most up-voted books become the top positions in the list.

Browsing by category

It is also possible to browse a list depending on the existing categories. In this index, only books containing the tag "steemdle_book" will be listed:

Reading books

It is only a matter of clicking on your favorite book and the first page will appear.

Up-voting books (and earn money)

When reaching the end of the book you will be kindly asked to vote for it:

Notice that it is not possible to "fast forward" a book to quickly reach the last page. You have actually to "turn" every single page until you get into the last one to be able to up-vote.

Write Reviews (and earn money)

After - and only after - reading the whole book it is also possible to write a review.

Reviews - as with comments in steemit - can also be up-voted by other users, and are of course equally rewarded.

I just woke up. Thanks for the up-voting!! What do you think about the idea? Would't it be a ground breaking device?

It could be the absolute amazon killer! Actually , it could be the the absolute end of all that greedy publishing companies.

I have some experince with publishing - as many of you, I guess.

In the real world, the author is the one who get less rewarded out of the publishing chain! Do you know any book author who can live out of his books? I don't.

On digital platforms like amazon or Apple, the companies are the ones who get the big part of the cake, not the authors. Im fact, the only way to up-rise your sales volume is pricing your books at 0,78$.

If I had such a device as the Steemdle, I will buy it right now.

I spent, as you can imagine a couple of days preparing the post. I got even that scared and paranoic about Amazon stealing the idea, that I even bought the domain.

In fact, the story does not ends here, and there might be also some surprises on that web page.

Amazon, the Steemdle is coming!

Where do I buy one! Should I submit a ticket to Amazon Support :)

Ask them politely, and they will sell you one!

They will probably claim they own the rights to "dle" and send you a cease and desist order :)

Awesome great for my grow guides here on steemit lol!

Is it a joke? Not sure...

Well, some people think im crazy...

Thanks for supporting with your votes!

Seriously guys! We can not allow amazon to keep selling kindles and paying little to nothing to new writters and reviewers! Steem is the platform for rewarding good authors. Let show it to the world. Lets have all writers move their books away from amazon into the steem. And lets create amazing clients and devices to make the reading experience even more exciting.
I think we are not missing ideas.
I think its even easier to create a profitable business model for such a dvise.
By the way? Is there someone out there who could tell me how much would it cost to manufacture, lets say, 100.000 basic e-ink devices with the hardware specs as described above?

Blockchain based books that pay the author as they are read/curated.... Nice...

Isn't that great @unchaineido? Sitting in the sun with a piña colada, reading Harry Potter on the Steem?
What if we could develope a format to even curate or comment fragments, paragraphs or single phrases in a book?

I'd be more interested in an android/windows app than buying a new tablet. I have several tablets already!

Edit: I do like the idea!

Hi @patrice,
Lets work on that idea as well. It would be interesting to know what is the actual market share of kindle books read on the kindle app vs. kindle device. Me, personally enjoy the e-ink of the kindle for long books reading. Have you ever test it? Specially if you read in heavy sun light environment the experience is much more "paper" like.

I don't do a lot of reading anymore, mostly listen to audio books. But there are still some books I can't find on audio so I pull out my tablet. I've actually never used a kindle. It would be interesting to see those stats.

On a side note, I might have to buy a kindle for my roommate. I've heard they are easy to use, I didn't realize there were other benefits such as reading in bright light. Roomie is a book hoarder. There isn't a room in the house or garage that doesn't have books! Even the laundry room has a bookcase!
