Exactly as you said - true content doesn't get any chance of spotlight in these circumstances which is increddibly frustrating as both the site and the community keep stressing original quality content, especially to newcomers like me, but a lot of what I see is everything but that.

Us smaller legit people get drowned in all the spam and I too have been wondering whether or not I truly wish to invest my time and effort into this site.
The future is uncertain.
I will continue for now, hoping things get better, but I already feel quite demotivated as the post I put the most work in (a long-ass essay) got the least payoff since it barely got any views at all. And I despise the thought of trading or otherwise trafficking upvotes - it feels empty and dissappointing.

So whats the solution? Why would anyone spend time working hard here for peanuts when whales or whatever are up voting and funneling money to themselves? If people are just after market trading gains, let them buy steem on an exchange. They should not be able to basically bribe upvotes and steem from whales which are supposed to be earned rewards, not paid shares. If they want to invest, they should do it in there market, not gobbling up hard work earnings. I'm not even 2 weeks in and now I understand why I was told to avoid this platform and not waste my time. I'm going stick around for at least a little while because FB is soul draining, there actually IS good content and community here, and I need a work from home prospect even if it only nets me 10-15 bucks a month. Even posting everyday that STILL seems like an unlikely amount with all this drama. Additionally, this internal economic power struggle will hurt the market value dissuading small investors, dropping price, so even more whales can swoop in to manipulate the crypto currency. Decentralized didn't work for the dollar, doesn't appear to be working here.

It's the human condition - it would work if we mercilessly weeded out the psychopaths, but hey - that would be fascist wouldn't it ? So we end up with fascist systems for EVERYBODY instead, or call them centralized. Some may be milder or more "socialist" (egalitarian) than others, but that doesn't really make a difference. Humans are bad social animals who need rules and strong laws. The West is right now disintegrating because its laws are weak, so they will be replaced with Sharia.

Yes, I do agree with the fact that human beings can be vile sometimes and lawlessness increases this. Here is the thing though, too much harsh or unnecessary laws end up enforcing negative reinforcement which will lead to the same result. There as to be a balance. The whole point of steemit is to bring fought positive reinforcement, make good content and be active to reap the benefit. Some people took advantage of this and have to be stopped by us finding democratic paths like contacting the other 'whales' and asking them to step up. Most of the people at the top helped create or grow this app and do not want to see it fail

Many of the people in that video are wearing the Algerian flag, most likely they are Muslim. You can hear people yell 'Allah' throughout the video. Even if we were to have a muslim president, there is sometime called laws and politians, and there are judiatiary processes that would stop something like that from happening. Workers have always been exploited. I don't know of any system that hasn't done this. When we go to 'work', the employer underpays us for our talents so that he scims a profit. If the workers abandon him, he just sets up shop somewhere else. They'll ride the gravy train until the wheels fall off.
Decentralization to the point of saying "here it is, do what you want with it", will eventually get people killed. There will always be people who think differently about things. We need someone "centralized" to use the system to say whether something is allowed or not. People can then talk about it all they want and come to whatever conclusions they want, but in the mean time, those that are literally getting rich by abusing the system will come to an end.
As it stands, anyone with a bunch of email addresses and some time can strip the reward pool for junk posts.
I am starting the think it is time to start powering down.

Do you really want this place to be pay to play? Steem has so much potential and this type of thinking is what is preventing it from being actualized. I'm a bit of an idealist really. Something romantic about a platform where, in theory, everybody has an equal voice and authors are rewarded on the basis of QUALITY! If you create quality, you will be rewarded. Sounds good in theory but where did we go wrong?
I, for one, have said it once and said it again that I have ABSOLUTELY no scruple with a 0 SP user making a hundred dollar reward if they produced something exceptional.
But the problem here is you have a slew of scammers that are getting rewarded through employing "advertising" services for nothing exceptional. It's a damn shame but it is quite reassuring to see more people that think like I do being more vocal about this issue.
What if you could pay a "service" to give likes to your Facebook post? Perhaps, there is and I wonder how you would feel about that. These tricks are used to confer to the material an artificial quality, perhaps a semblance of quality or popularity but, more often than not, it's just hype. We have reduced a potentially much more inspired blogging community to a sick sort of cash grab for those that whore themselves to (deceptive) marketing tools.
In the process of creating something that will help through incentivization of good flags and have started a no self voted promotion service. These things may help but to effect significant change in the current design would require a change of heart from the top down.
But how does one convince the one that has the gold egg-laying chicken to give it up for the greater good and therein lies the problem. If one bid bot stops, they are going to go to another.
If the community were to get behind an antibidbot (one that targets posts stilted up on paid upvotes), then there may be hope yet. There are also a less drastic approach I am considering and that is we create a new Steem front end that specifically filters out self voted and bid botted posts. They can play in their own echo chamber. We don't have to play ball. We just need o collectively opt out of supporting them and I believe things will change.

Don´t take it personally man, I´ve seen your content and it is good, but this post is highly overvalued. And not overvalued by organic votes (which then the community is the one deciding it adds value to the platform) but by bidbot votes.
Yeah, I get sickened by toutube adds not letting me watch a video, i get sickened by google shoving up my face a plane ticket to a place I googled, I get sickened by Facebook telling me to like something based on my conversation key words. So yeah, I get sickened by paid content on steemit, which is supposed to be free of all the centralized agenda from mayor websites.
I don´t feel envious, this comment as I said is not personal, If i wanted I could use bidbots on every post of mine and get them not to 300 but to 600, but i dont do it because if the community is not ovoting them high enough, perhaps it does not deserve to be up there, dont you think?
I know you don´t use them a lot (bidbots) and I´m actually not against using once in a while on e of them to give some visibility to the content or the message you are trying to get through, but to use 6 of them and get it to 300? If you want to advertise or pay for exposure, that is why the "promoted" tab is there, to pay for exposure. Bidbots (for good or bad, I´m not the one to tell) are just a way of rigging the system.
Promoted doesnt work. Because you know< promoted content should be on the same feed like ordinary one, but Steemit Inc. never heard about it.

The bidbots and purchased delegation are being used my many people to take advantage of the SBD bonanza at the moment. I am not saying it's happening in this case but I know of other people that are doing this.
It's a slap in the face to all of us who worked hard to get to the level we're at. We were all competing honestly at one point. It wasn't perfect, but majority of us sure tried our best.
This vote buying nonsense is bringing my property value down. Think about it. Look how much I had to work to get what I have. Now, are they trying to tell me it means nothing? Sure looks like it.

Have a look at minds.com, they're issuing a crypto token soon... now this is a classic social network, and there's moderators. It drew lots of people from facebook because it lacks political censorship (if you don't want to read Nazi or Commie posts, just switch off "open content", if you don't want porn switch off "explicit" - you get 50 points an hour just for being there, and you can use them to boost your posts. You can also buy these points - there's quite a few artists on the network and there's other users who will send you points whenever they appreciate your posts.
I'm loyal to this place. I came here to help build it. I stay here so people can see how the place can work as intended. It was working great for many people until these middlemen walked in. We don't need them. As soon as people wake up and realize the potential of this place when it's functioning as it was designed, not even the sky is the limit.
Now I realize I sound like an idiot. Idiots also said the car would replace the horse. Idiots said the internet is NOT just a fad. Idiots said everyone would do their shopping online. They were always idiots, until everyone realized the potential.

I have almost 90k followers on Google and I've done "social" since five years now... so this is not exactly the first platform I'm looking at. It didn't feel right from the first day, and I'm not even talking about the people you have in mind - I didn't realize they even existed. No, my impression was just one of empty shelves with dreary designs, and without any atmosphere. It does not compare well, it's clutzily made and lacking the intricacies and qualities other networks possess.
The only attraction of steemit is in fact the monetary gains system, the network is as such a glove that fits the steem coin and gives it a semblance of meaning, which is not unclever from a marketing point of view. On the other hand, it will of course attract a certain kind of people - to put it bluntly, the sort who hope to financially gain from it. Is that hard to understand or in any way surprising ? It is obviously exactly what the originators wanted it to be, as much as the human condition must have been the will of an omnipotent creator ;)
If you think you belong here, then that is obviously the case.
Sure, maybe to you, and other people who have "done 'social' since five years" the only draw to steemit is the money, and there is a reason why people like that burn out here, because it is all about the money. But for the REAL users this platform is great. I can find content creators, support their efforts, have an actual dialog with them, curate through their comments to make the best rise to the top (good luck with that on youtube or facebook), etc. I have yet to see a single social platform that gives that much control to not just the runners of the community, but to the members as well.
Not only that, but if any group of people wish to share whatever opinions they have, it is not censor-able in any way (aside from filtering and flagging but that is beside the point). I am hard pressed to find cons aside from all the spam comments that never get up-voted anyway with their "I vote u vote me resteem follow". but have you seen the spam on youtube or others?

I only came here for some special content and so I had a prolonged but entirely unambitioned look, for the reasons I listed. You see, I earn my money indirectly, from assuring that certain things and people get placed well on search engines.
I see steemit much in the same category as youtube, which I also sometimes visit for special content. I had a look at facebook in 2012 but decided against joining it - Google is handling spam very nicely, there's no trouble at all and marketing still works if you know what you're doing... regarding youtube, many creators have recently left it because it had started to censor politically and/or demonetize ad-unfriendly content (a very flexible term that also excludes some art). These people have all flooded into other networks, mostly minds.
It's unsurprising that you find no flaws when you really don't seem to have all that much to compare.
Sorry for insulting your home turf - some people feel comfortable on a construction site - I'm not envious, that's all.
Okay, I was offering you an out to better elaborate how minds allows so much more community control (especially when they seem to have a scatalogical disorder on their newsfeed for most newbies) But I suppose you would rather assume you hurt an entrenched "steemer" (forgive the pun).
You haven't spent much time in youtube comments if you think google does a good job at eliminating spammy comments or curating the best to the top, go sift through some comments on a trending video, it swings all over the place with the majority adding no value to the topic at hand.

Really good to see someone else fighting the good fight. You keep it up now. I've opted out of bid bots and self-voting for some time but it really ticks me off to see others just zipping past me using their "tools". It's quite disheartening but I know people like us aren't going to stop anytime soon. We need a real witness. I would like to point out you CAN actually go buy trophies that say world's greatest artist. Not that it would mean much to the world on a grander scale.
That joke aside I believe you are right and it was something that was an issue on twitch a few years ago with view bots. But if we are decentralized then there is little that can be done at this moment. The blockchain doesn't have an anti-fraud purpose and it would have to be monitored for outside of the blockchain itself since the voting can be purchased with any other currency. I would argue that some values could be changed. Something like reputation taking more effect but then that could be manipulated as well if not implemented carefully.
It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
