Part 3

Through the sound deadening blanket of mist a deep bass ‘whomping’ sound was getting steadily louder. Ffion and I looked around intently, a few meters away we could barely make out the riverbank.

The sound intensified, albeit still muffled by the mist; which, in conjunction with reverberation from the surrounding hills gave rise to the impression that it was all around us.
Ffion managed to say,
“What’s . . .”
before she was drowned out and a colossal downdraft assaulted us, blasting us with a myriad of loose debris.

In the pervading whiteness a shadow materialised above us barely meters away, the sound and hurricane onslaught dying away on the instant as engines were backed off. Fieldsheer grabbed our shoulders for attention and shouted for us to follow; we splashed through a few meters of ankle deep water before leaping up the low bank and forcing our way through knee-deep bushes. Through the murk a shaft of light shone out for a few meters before dissipating in the mist, Fieldsheer used it as a beacon and homed in on the intruder.
Suddenly it was there in front of us, we had virtually walked into its fuselage! I recognised immediately that it was one of the American ‘Tilt Rotor’ transport aircraft, which take off and land vertically. We fumbled our way around the side following the torch light beacon, looking for a door;
