Is Steemit Just A Consensus of Greed Over A Consensus of High Quality Content?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I think this is a great question for all minnows to ask as we drive this STEEM platform forward. I am in no way jealous of those with more STEEM power than me, my mandate is to have a more egalitarian approach to high quality content. To remove people from The Matrix of having to suck up to big whales to collect meagre crumbs from the table. High quality content can come from all over the STEEM network. I've seen minnows with a reputation of 25 write better articles than @ericvancewalton. Why no breaks or paragraphs here @mindhunter?? I don't want to rant on. I just want equality of high quality content. Hopefully the new hard fork will save us minnows from sucking at the teat of Charlie Shrem permanently. That would be nice. No more. No less. Thank you for reading. @mindhunter

Maybe the hope is that the correct incentives (i.e. greed) will lead to identifying quality posts?

That is like saying having a bigger smelly dick like Bigfoot will lead to better sex ;)

lol why is bigfoots dick smelly? omg He got a DICKBUTT

bigger dick often means better sex to me. it's that extra angry inch. lofl

Ahhhh...'that extra angry inch' = the ole' 'grudge f*ck'

You just gave me an idea: the first steem dildo; shaped like a minnow.
when it's time to let off some steem grudge!

You can't have equality of high quality content without equality of exposure and following. And you build the later through the first. Time and effort expended to build a following by an old member cannot be neutralized in favor of a new entrant that wants "equality" because that would be unfair to the old member.

Power build on reputation - exactly - not on SP alone! Hopefully the new hard fork can fix this!

SP does not give reputation. Upvotes do.

60mn USD in SP. Reputation just 34.

@alexgr, I think the goal isn't equality but quality of posts. Being an established member shouldn't mean your quality can suffer and still trend. While I admit it's possible that there are lots and lots of people with very bad taste in poetry who are voting up a storm, I fear Occam's razor suggests that the simpler possibility of there being a real flaw in the curation structure. You probably understand this better than I do and would love to have my mind changed.

For poetry in particular there may be a "flaw" in that the curators may not be poetry experts - so they may be upvoting without the proper "criteria", if you will.

The number of big curators is small. Meaning that the range of their accumulated interests will also be small compared to the diversity of a platform that has thousands of people writing. Still, if they are interested in technology, and not art, photography or poetry, they may be upvoting art/photography/poetry etc in order to diversify the content of the platform and incentivize that material as well. In that case, yes, perhaps not the best poetry (or art) will get upvoted but it's better than no poetry (or art) getting upvoted. This could be fixed through something like what Smooth does where he hires a curating committee... perhaps you could have art experts, poetry or novel experts etc etc and have them determine where the whale upvotes should go.

I frequently vote for posts based on "feeling". I'm not an expert in photography, poetry, or many other fields. If I like the person and they are supporting the community by engaging and sharing the wealth per say, I will upvote a post I like even if an expert would find it flawed.

Would I do this if I was a whale? Probably. I'd just lower my voting power to distribute more.

99% of all the upvoted poetry on here is DISMALLY BAD. We need to pay for professional curators in the arts.

This is one of the best comments that I've read on here! I may need to write a post on your comments.

I think the big investors are not here to read interesting content) And it's really a problem. You have any suggestions?

@steemblog told me yest. a more egalitarian hard fork it coming soon. "Let the minnow see the hard fork!"

Also watch on tomorrow (Sunday), supposedly the biggest dollah-day...keep an eye on the posting activity...it's very telling. Only vote Dolphin or below tomorrow. Spread the word.

you wanted your username as @mindfucker right? but there were no profanities allowed? haha

The start of everything is price discovery and balancing of content vs. greed

God! I wish I'd written those words into my article @mandibil ! FOLLOW!

'sucking at the teat of Charlie Shrem' - WHAT A KILLER LINE FOR US MINNOWS @mindhunter !! LOVE IT!!

That teat of Charlie Shrem started giving me nightmares after I wrote it - it sounds like some kinda weird STEEM fetish! "Nein!!"

Truth hurtful.
Hopefully everything will get better soon .

You are not alone. Hopefully, there will be increasingly effective ways for the cream to rise. Step one is probably to have everyone, including bots, vote by article and not by author. I tried posting an article a day and my quality immediately suffered. My one rushed post had lost that special quality that comes with multiple drafts. Thank god razvanelulmarin bothered to read it and took my request for feedback seriously. I'd like to believe I am such a great writer that I could earn hundreds or even thousands per article, no matter what. But the truth is that it's not who wrote it, it's what they wrote.

A honest look down the barrel of Steemit there @pulpably - you do write well. Your 'effective ways for the cream to rise.' line hit me right between the eyes! THANK YOU!!

Did you hear about the @misgivings reveal? I commented on a few of those articles, suggesting ways to improve. At least I know the lack of response wasn't smugness but...fraud. That you are smelling something fishy is good for Steemit, even if obnoxious for those of us who don't know what to do about it. I get the sense the Project Curie folks are on to more than even you or I. Crossing fingers. Steem on @mindhunter!

"ONWARDS! my minnow friend!" (I've said that twice today now!)

Its an experiment and humans will naturally try to exploit it for riches. How long until we have pump groups, aka steem whales pumping each others posts and paying themselves huge sums of money? Will it happen? who knows? will it be possible? who knows. Will good content come? i hope so and i hope steem will grow good content and not just be a circle jerk for the minority. Anything is possible so its really exciting. So to me everything that happens ,good and bad here is exciting. :)
