[Steemit TIPS] Posts Not Being Appreciated? Stay Motivated By Doing This NOW!

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Feeling underappreciated at Steemit because your posts disappear in the Steemit Niagara(the fast-moving new posts feed!), and no one seems to be reading them? If you would like that to change and receive due recognition and praise for your work, the last thing you should do is to stop posting.

How lucky are the few who are magically intrinsically motivated and do not find it difficult to keep going without a pat on the back. But most people - including me sometimes - tend to feel low if my efforts to create good quality content are unappreciated.

When a feeling of there being no appreciation creeps in, staying motivated could become really difficult.

The Science of Appreciation

Let me ask you a question - if A and B feel unappreciated, but A is handed a hundred dollar reward and the other gets some pep talk for a few minutes, who do you think will be more motivated later?

If you guessed A, you are wrong!

B, who is appreciated with words not money is the one who will be more motivated - isn't that a surprise? People who are appreciated verbally are bound to feel good about it and as a result they continue to do their best.

So that is that for monetary rewards for motivation. But, you will ask, what else will keep me going, if it is not money. We'll come to that, in a minute.

The human brain is divided into two parts and each has an almond shaped thing called amygdala in it. Ever get a feeling of fear of the unknown, of things that you can not control? It's the amygdala at work. In fact, the amygdala uses two thirds of its power to look for anything negative - you could say that it goes and finds bad news for you most of the time. Once it brings in the bad news in the form of remembering bad experiences for a few seconds, it gets deposited in long term memory.

The fight to stay motivated is real - and it's not just you it is a human tendency to feel demotivated - that is, unless you decide to do something about it.

So what can you do on Steemit to keep yourself motivated? Here are some ways you can motivate yourself:

Focus on Small Wins

I recently completed my first month on Steemit and created a post about it. In it, I focused on my small successes. Something is always better than nothing, especially if you are a newcomer, compared to those who joined Steemit in 2016 or early 2017 who are established. If you have 20 followers, 30 upvotes on your posts and a rising rep after your first week, it is reason to feel happy about. It shows that things that you are doing are working.

By forcing yourself to look for small victories you prime your mind to stop focusing on the negative and your awareness about the positive aspects increases.

Make Your Own Goals

Each person could have different goals according to his/ her skills and scope of effort. Everyone is not a full-time blogger on Steemit - besides you could be a stay-at-home mom or dad. So go ahead and create a list of goals according to the time you have and the effort that you can make. The list of goals could include the following:

  1. Followers
  2. Number of posts
  3. Rep score
  4. Earnings

Add anything else that would like to aim for. Here is where I discussed my goals in my post:

Unlike in an office environment where you have a boss making your goals for you, here you will have to make your own. Your goals keep moving you forward until your reach them. Once you attain them you get a sense of satisfaction and then feel motivated enough to create new goals. Even if you don't reach some of those goals, you will still have the fight in you to reach your new goals.

Provide Value

One reason for feeling demotivated is because few people know what they can really do with their posts. When you create a post, you are providing value to people. Share your real experiences where you learnt something, or make a how-to guide of something you learnt recently. Once you provide value people will certainly appreciate what you do.

It may be only a handful of people to start with, who appreciate your work. But more will notice your work and in due course of time you will be known for providing huge value in your posts.

For example, I had a few questions when I signed up including the amount of time to get approved. But I found a few posts on Steemit that answered all the questions that I had.

Speak Up

Some may forget that Steemit is a social network. There are Discord rooms where you can meet and talk with other Steemians. Steemit Chat is another place where you can engage in conversations. Talk to people and get answers to your questions and tips on how you can get better. You can also explain what you know to others. By engaging with others who are also blogging on Steemit you can keep yourself motivated.

Encourage Others

The best way to motivate yourself is to help in fostering a culture of appreciation. Encourage others who may have also joined recently by sharing some positive experience with them. Comment on the first post of someone new, especially in the Introduce Yourself section. Say something positive in all your comments, and in your interactions with others in the chat rooms.

Each drop in the ocean counts and those who you appreciate will not only reciprocate but will also appreciate others.

Take Breaks

One of the most common problems especially when you're new to Steemit is that it is addictive. Whether you have published a blog post or made a comment you always end up going back to check for replies, number of upvotes or the increase in the number of followers. Since any of these can happen anytime, most people tend to check this constantly on their computers - or smartphones which are always next to them.

Fix the time that you spend on Steemit and spend time on other things. Do spend time with your family, going out and devote enough time to exercise. These may be extrinsic forms of motivating yourself but they are known to work well. If you stay at your desk looking at your computer screen all the time, you will get weary and depressed if things are not working out the way you want.

Conclusion

Staying motivated is very important to give your best. If you look around you will find many who have succeeded, but may have been in the same position as you are now, some time back. Follow these tips and keep yourself goal-oriented and move ahead consistently, one step at a time.

Wish you all the very best in your Steemit journey!

@maxabit, your posts are so inspirational and informative. Your blog is SO worth following!
I don't have a lot of time to spend on Steemit, hence your 'Make your own goals' piece of advice works really well for me! Also, I really respect the fact you encourage Steemeans to take a break!
All the best!
:)

I love motivational posts like this, @maxabit.

A couple weeks ago, I posted an article relating to your section on Taking Breaks, discussing the importance of sleep and relaxation.

One of the most common problems especially when you're new to Steemit is that it is addictive.

Steemit is very addictive and even a penny reward is more than you will find on another social media platform.

I wasn't aware of the affects the amygdala has on our negative thought process. Good to know.

This post also reminds me of a Zig Ziglar quote:

People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.

How true!

Thanks for the great post! I've recently started to use my Steem account and I'm learning everyday. I really feel that my posts just drowns in the amount of other stuff on Steem. But I think it's fun and I don't expect anything from it. So I'm still motivated.

This was awesome, I felt this way earlier this week, all it took was a friend telling me they enjoy my posts and 'keep it up' those words changed my whole outlook and it's okay if I get no views or a few or many....there's that one person that appreciates my post, it's the journey sometimes not so much the huge reward...thanks for this New follower :)

I appreciate your comment! I think you get it - so keep Steeming!
