Ned Talks - Recent Podcast Interview Shines A Light On WordPress Integrations For Steem

in #steemit8 years ago

Listening to @ned's interview on the Epicenter podcast the other day gave me a taste of the vision he shared for Steemit and the direction it's taking.

If you haven't heard it yet, @seanmeeh42 posted the interview in it's entirety here

Of particular interest to me was the ideas he had for developing apps for WordPress. If you're not familiar with WordPress, WordPress is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) that makes it easy t build websites.

About half the websites in the world use it. To date, 74,652,825 sites out there are depending on good ol’ WordPress.

I have built 300 WordPress sites myself and one of the coolest feature is the many plugins that were developed to add functionality to a website. WordPress' plugin architecture allows users to extend the features and functionality of a website or blog.

One cool and popular plugin that works with WordPress is called Disqus.

Disqus helps digital publishers build strong audiences.
If you publish content, you can increase reader engagement right on your website, giving you the right tools to grow. Even better, it’s simple to install and free to use.

He talked about the development of an app like Disqus that could be added to existing WordPress sites and run on the Steemit blockchain.

This could have far-reaching implications for introducing Steem and the Steemit platform to a wider audience and incentivize website owners to join Steemit.

Another great app would be a WordPress plugin to accept Steem for payments right from a WordPress site. A payment gateway for Steem on WordPress would open many doors for ecommerce and pave the way for wider adoption.

So far, the only WordPress plugins I've seen related to Steemit is Steemit Feed, a simple WordPress plugin that displays a feed of your Steemit posts.

Adding comments that can be upvoted directly from a WordPress site and payment processors that accept Steem and SBD would be a game changer and I'm excited to hear @ned talking about these developments.

It seems the community only focused on one comment he made in that interview which you can hear about here, here and here. but the move to blend Steemit apps into WordPress would be a step into the mainstream.

eBay, The New Yorker, CNN, Beyonce, The Rolling Stones, Play Station, Best Buy, ESPN, Fortune, The New York Times, Larry King Live, Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, The Walking Dead, these are just a few of the websites run on WordPress.

Imagine the traffic and comments these sites get and if commenters can get rewarded in Steem for interacting with these sites it would be a huge benefit to the Steemit community as a whole and many of these companies would join Steemit to benefit as well.

I was waiting for someone to summarize that video

I don't know if this is a summary really, but I wanted to highlight the WordPress integration vision he shared. Since joining Steemit I was excited about the possibilities of what the two platforms could do if they were combined.

Piggybacking on a platform like WP would be great for both platforms.

Absolutely!! I can't wait!

There has been some work on this for a comments plugin that also pushes and pulls content. So far I haven't seen one work yet. And the RSS feed from Steemit does not always format well on WordPress, even with a Markdown plugin to help. Anyone out there want to work on a plugin to make that happen?

I've been looking for something like that. I'm not a developer though.

Hmmm... wonder what this means to e-Steem then.

What do you mean?

Will wordpress option obsolete or compete with e-Steem app is the doubt I have.
I see e-Steem evolve quite well from what I read though I have not personally tried it. :-)
