Closer look at voting distribution for Trending posts
Thanks to a fabulous new feature in SteemStats.com, called Vote Inspector, we can peek into the distribution and weightages of votes that make up the curation rewards.
Naturally, I went ahead and checked up the top two Trending posts.

Here's what I found -
We knew it would be the top few making up a vast majority of the votes, but I am still surprised. You can clearly see the algorithms in action. In both cases, the top 10 voters out of 100s made up cumulatively 80+% of the weightage.
Thanks to being early, in one case a single user accounted for over half the weight! It's also interesting to see that steemers who are early can be more influential than steemers who have ten times or more the Steem Power.
Fascinating stuff. Do post if you find interesting numbers like this for other posts or see some more interesting patterns.
Addendum I posted this 8 hours ago. I have been looking at vote breakdowns for a bunch of trending posts, and I have found one that is remarkably different from this rest. Unlike most other posts, the top few cover only ~35% of the weightage! My most interesting observation is by being 5 hours earlier than than @rainman, @ozmaster has outweighed someone with 160x the Steem Power.
I suppose this is a glimpse into the future - when the platform balances out and influence no longer lies with the very few.
It's incredibly interesting how much power the whales have currently in this industry. Also - thanks for linking to the update notes at the top of your post :)
I can't wait for the day when the weight becomes a little more distributed. Right now there's only a handful of people on the site who's opinions actually have an impact. Imagine the day when there are hundreds, if not thousands, of "market makers" who get to help curate what content exists on the site. That will take time, and will require dedication and effort for people to rise to that level.
I know if/when I get to the point where my vote makes a huge difference, I will put serious consideration into what I'm casting my vote on. Currently with my nickle-power, I'm probably a little bit more liberal than I would be at that level.

I can see how the whales are promoting Steem Power across the platform. Looking at the Steemd.com Distribution, it's clear more and more people are entering the "user" and "superuser" categories. It will take time, but I can see this working at as more and more "market makers", as you put it, join the ranks. Eventually, the growth will reach the funding limit, and things will stabilise. But by then, I hope we will have a diverse panel of curators who have different interests across the board.
My upvote is worth only a cent. But I have my good old Reddit ways. I admit I have been tempted to upvote content I thought would be popular rather than something I believe in. But that was a mistake. I'll only be upvoting content judiciously, stuff that I really like. I think everyone should do the same. That's how a database of great content is created.
Couldn't agree more. I think once the "holy crap my posts make money" feeling wears off, people will start to think more about the weight that the account they own carries. It's an incredibly important part of the site and people need to respect the power they weld. There are so many layers of discovery in how this all works beyond what people currently comprehend.

However I could not find explanation what "qWeight", "Round Shares" and other terms really mean. Maybe it is there and I am just being blind, sorry if it is the case.
Anyway, If you provide some more info/explanations, maybe I can include it in the Beyond the STEEM Whitepaper
These are internal metrics. As far as I'm aware, the proportion of Round Shares is directly linked with Steem Power. Weight is the metric that determines curation rewards, but I'll let an expert on the matter detail on it.
Steemstats.com is awesome... You can post stats like these periodically, they are nice - and from what I'm seeing get plenty of votes.

Yep, you start with no expectations and then get positively surprised. I find this works best for me... btw I also had a comment upvoted in the same article of masteryoda. Something like 350-400$... good stuff...

Haha, yes! @jesta is a rockstar. The development pace of SteemStats always amazes me - it seems like there's an awesome new feature every other day.
Remember, though, that it's finding a balance between being early and too early. During the first 30 minutes, you are penalized. 100% at 0 seconds down to 0% at 30 minutes.
On the other hand, some posts just explode very quick, and for these it might be worth getting in early and taking a penalty than waiting for 30 minutes till it's upvoted to $5,000 already. So it's always about a balance!
hmm steemit is not a common site, learn more to get advantage in this is site, not only about how to get more dollar or popular, but how to know about the steemit system
Thanks for the post. I Had a peek at this myself also. There is more and more tools being created it gives users a more diverse way of compiling a strategic analysis.
