It's impossible to sign up for 99% of Chinese, dan and ned need to fix this ASAP

in #steemit8 years ago

I introduced STEEM to lots of my Chinese friends and strangers, but most of them complained that they cann't sign up.

Let me explain why:

1. 99.99% of Chinese don't have an reddit account, it's impossible to sign up with a newly created reddit account.

2. 99% of Chinese don't have Facebook account, and Facebook was blocked by Chinese Firewall.

But, 99% of Chinese use QQ or Wechat.

You should add a third sign up option, ASAP.

Sort:

Using QQ / WeChat will probably leads to Sybil.
Better idea is here: https://steemit.com/cn/@xiaohui/perfect-solution-for-chinese-verification-alipay-trust-verification

It'd be hard for me to overstate my support for this. GFW sucks a bunch, and the only way to improve the shit state of Sino-rest-of-world relations is by actually taking an active effort and doing something about it. Supporting one or all of the QQ/wechat/baidu/alibaba login APIs on steemit but also on as many sites as possible generally is one way to get folks inside and outside of China talking, and realizing that we're all one human species, with the same struggles.

Call it an inoculation against warfare.

thanks for your support.

One world, one purpose is my thinking on the matter :). We all do better, together.

Yes, 99% of Chinese use QQ or Wechat. I'd strongly recommend that steemit team support for QQ or Wechat verifieation. @dan, @ned

and also weibo.com. It's also popular in China.

Thanks Laonie, this is valuable input - we'll be working on additional sign up routes soon.

We talked about this in the Chinese community this afternoon, the best idea is use Alipay Trust Verification, they have a credit score, many banks use it to issue credit cards, it's impossible to abuse.
QQ , SMS, WeChat have the risk to be abused.

There is a billion people in the internet in china, thank you for consider this.
By the way, will you have a look at my ppt for new comers?

Well, realistically they could create their own account, it just wouldn't be "free". Anyone can create an account for a fee of 3 STEEM (currently). It's just difficult at the moment, requiring some technical knowledge.

Also on the topic of "free" - it really isn't even free right now. Steemit is paying to create an account for everyone that chooses to register with facebook or reddit. I assume this fee is being paid with the STEEM that the organization itself has set aside for this purpose. In fact, we can look at the creation of your account here:

After reading a few posts (this one included), I do think that some clarity needs to be given around the topic of account creation. I wouldn't be surprised if the "free" accounts we're creating right now by verifying with social media won't exist in the future.

But - the sentiment in your post is accurate. There are people out there who can't create the "free" accounts and it would be nice if they could!

Glad to know that , thanks.

good details on this. I didn't know how that really works.

I believe they are going to use SMS verification soon as well.

Yeah, SMS verification is the best idea, everybody has it , and hard to abuse.

This, this post makes to much sense. haha!

Hi @laonie i am not sure about this. But i have China friends who access facebook through VPN. And a facebook account can lead to a signup with steemit.

Those might be rare cases. Mainstream will have to be educated on that for them to be able to participate in the community.

yes thanks it was explained to me in the wechat group

....is an amazing app used in China for messaging, payments, automation, dating, and I'm dead-certain that I'm missing more than a dozen things that this app is commonly used for each and every day.

WeChat

Is its non-chinese equivalent where it is not integrated into the larger nation state and the fabric of most businesses. WeChat is trash.

Side Note

If anyone can get me a gig doing internationalization consulting for a major Chinese app/platform, I will take it in a heartbeat. China should be exporting software at this point, the lead is so large in many categories.... I suspect that we are not far from the advent of the era of cloned Chinese products appearing in the rest of the world, instead of the other way around.

2nd side note:

With the above said, China will continue to have a significant disadvantage in open source software development until Internet policies change.

@ned @dan Chinese people desperatly need things like steem , because we are sick of the censorship, ban, deleting everywhere in China, steem is the free land, the goverment wasn't able to block steem, only can block steemit.com. The policy change won't happen from the top, only from the botton, from the people.

I feel you, we definitely need authentification via we chat. There som much censorship for facebook in their side of the earth. I little consideration for them will definitely contribute a great deal in steem community. Devs should hear them out.
