Emojis on Steemit, how do we all feel about them? (and how to add them here, now!)

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Currently there is no easy way to add emojis, emoticons or smileys here. Do we want them, or not?

Smile!

On another platform, I built my reputation for coding and giving away a free Smiley App that would allow posters to include smileys a.k.a emojis a.k.a emoticons in their discussions, blogs, photo descriptions and comments.

I'm wondering what the members of the Steemit Community think about emojis. Is it something we think would add to our communications or not? Should there be an easy way to add emojis with the Steemit editor?

I find that it is sometimes hard to discern intent when reading pure text. Was the writer being sarcastic? Or were they trying to be humorous? Emojis could help convey the author's true meaning.

It seems to me that those who text a lot, or communicate on Facebook or kik or other messenger apps, really like emojis and use them (over use them?) in almost every post. What would it do to the perception of our community if we use them here?

Right now, an emoji markdown that I have seen does not work here. If you enter  in here, you don't see a little yellow face smiling back at you.

But if we do want to use emojis NOW, we can simply upload the image of an emoji we want to use, and then insert it as we insert any other image. https://guides.github.com/features/mastering-markdown/

For example, if I enter:
![smile](http://i.imgsafe.org/82ca7b167a.gif)
I will get this: smile

Emoji's seem to work fine👌

Thanks for commenting! smile

I know @aaron-brodie can see the emojis that people add on their iPhone, on His iPhone. I'll have to view this post on my Android phone to see what I see. But on Windows 10, I just see the hex code box, as in the screen capture I posted above.

So the alternate is to use the image code I put in the post. The side-effect of that is, the steemit system grabs any image in a comment and uses it as the lead image to the left of the text, in the comment lists. I am seeing that yellow face in lots of the lists I am in!

Thanks for co-founding Steemit and have a great day! smile

EDIT
I just checked on my Android v4.2.2 phone and I can see a hand making an "ok" sign on roadscape's post, but on Dan's post I see a black rectangle with a black X inside it.
I guess this is turning into the Emoji test page! What does anyone else see? Let me know please!

I think you may have used an emoji from your phone? It probably shows fine for you, and others whose devices decode emoji hex codes into images. But for me on a Windows PC using FireFox as my browser, I see this:
How emoji from phone shows on Steemit
Do You see the smileys I put in my post, on your device???

I see them from my iPhone

That's really cool, how did you do it? :-)

Careful using it though, it doesn't always mean 'A-OK', in some Latin countries, it means A-hole!

:-D

Unfortunately, nothing still made in this direction, so I have written a browserplugin for it.

It is available for Firefox and Chrome

I find it kind of strange when use HTML to post (which some times mess up my test after sometime when it look perfectly OK when I posted), I cannot use the emoji. However, the replies allow Markdown. So, I can do the same here as you have as example in this post "smile".
Now after reading this post, I tried to look at submit post again and found seems possible but then you cannot use the Editor or the HTMLoption anymore. For example, when submit a new post, in the body section, click "Editor", then it change to "Markdown". Next, I click on "Markdown" and it seems to allow the emoji codes in to be showing nicely. Think I need to experiment more. May have to drop HTML editing and switch to Markdown totally.
In conclusion: I do agree steemit should have this allowed and not just the Markdown option only.

Thanks for commenting and experimenting! smile

You're welcome

??

&#128187 look like needed pc icon but not everywhere. On "posts" tab of profile it is, but here in this comment - not.
Update. Just copy and paste symbols from the table. Look at the table. If you see emoji picture in the "Native" column then you should use emoji and hope it will be displayed properly.

This should definitely be a part of steemit

Hey Kenny,

I'm so glad you mentioned this, I was looking for, Markdown, emoji codes the other day and I came across an emoji debate on, the meta.stackexchange, a guy there was asking for them. Quite a few people where turning their noses up at him, and asking; what's the point? etc.

He then gave a link to an article called:

7 Reasons to Use Emoticons in Your Writing and Social Media, According to Science

Check it out, it's a really interesting read. Anyway, it reminded me of a series of sci-fi novels I read a few years back, which I can't remember the name of. In that universe, everyone communicated mentally on the affinity band and when you spoke over the mental channel, you would send emotions first, so that the person receiving your message would also get the context.

Emojis are great, they help us convey emotion and connect with people :-)

Thanks for commenting, and thanks for siting that article! I read it and I agree with the 7 points.
Next thing I will do here is, see how we can use Emojis with the new Editor. Right now, I didn't even get the new editor when I clicked reply to write this. We're in beta so its expected to see experimentation and change on the site!
