How To Draw A Whale! (Proven Tips!)

in #steemit8 years ago

Everyone is obsessed with Whales these days. So I'm going to teach you how to make your own whale!

Whale Shark!!!

So here he is! I looked up a photo for reference... You may need to do the same unless you're obsessed with whales and you know exactly what they look like from head to toe.
I'm using my Ipad mini as a photo reference.

Draw the basic outline

Draw Guidelines if necessary.

Begin your shading

Start with the darkest areas first, And lighten up, Leave the light areas alone. I'm using a paper stump to create soft shades

Deepen the shading

Get darker shades, Start using your B pencils to really darken those areas and give them a rich, smooth shade.

This guy has spots!

So instead of trying to outline each spot, I'm going to go ahead and darken his whole body. I have an Electric Eraser That will give me those nice little white spots that I need.

When you are finishing darkening his body...#

Use your electric eraser and hit the paper leaving a round dot, They probably won't be perfectly round, And thats the point, Keep your eraser at an angle to ensure a nice natural look, Don't over erase.

You've got a pretty whale all to yourself!

He's pretty much done now, I just need to spray him to ensure the pencil doesn't smear. (I use aerosol hairspray)

What does yours look like? Post it!!

Should of added a fat steempower checkbook! Good one though. Here's mine :)

Hahah I should of ! Lol. I threw in the custom sticker I had made, Using the logo of my art business and steemit hahah!!

It's nowhere near as good as yours and with only a trusty #2 as my shading device, this is an honest attempt. I would like to get some better drawing implements and try some more as you continue to teach us.

That's actually really good, @bendjmiller I'm still not convinced that I could do this. I can share my writing but my confidence is in the basement when it comes to drawing or painting.

I think I may at the very least win a few more rounds of pictionary thanks to @kaylinart.

aww yours looks really good! I love it! I will do some more basic tutorials later :) I am new to teaching drawing so I'm hoping that I can figure out the best way to do it! I love your attempt though hheheh

excellent effort.
just a note: i think whale shark and whale are different types of animals.
a whale is a mammal and whale shark is a shark which should make it a fish.
I did a quick check for the whale shark here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_shark

Hahah! Thank you for this! I'll probably draw a real whale later, But I had a nightmare I was attacked by a whale shark so I decided to draw one of those.

you are welcome. when I first heard that whale shark is a fish, i was also going hmm...

great whale i love your artwork! thanks for posting!

Cool...I like B&W images very and B&W art too :))

LOVE This post!

Thank you so much hehehe

It seems to me that the more you draw the whales, the more you want to be on the ocean ;) Cool whale you got. Thanks for inspiration!

thank you!! I can't stop thinking about the ocean I'm so excited, I have a million other projects I'm supposed to be working on, but I just want to draw ocean stuff.

:) I knew it!

Nice work! How were you able to add the gif in the beginning? (Newbie here.)

Thats mine, I made it.
You can make an assortment of photos become a gify by going to this site :) http://gifmaker.me/
I hope this helps

When you added your gif, did you click the picture icon and paste the link before going posting?

What? No I save the GiF to my computer, Then upload it to imgur then I use the HTML code to post it

So that's where my issue lie, thanks!

Clever girl! ;)

Thank you hehe XD
Are you saying I'm a veloceraptor?

Nah - just pretty damned good at painting whales ;)

Heheh thank you XD your comment just reminded me of Jurassic park haha.

Yes! Now you have to be humming the theme song in your head today.
