Steemit Is An Ocean Full Of Talent | Learning How To Discover Hidden Pearls

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Do you always go to the trending page, mercilessly hitting that upvote button on each and every one of those articles that are already earning a couple of 100$, without even knowing what the article is about?

amazing-animal-beautiful-beautifull.jpg

Are you guilty of using your vote on your own comment, which you wrote on an article that you didn’t even vote on?

There’s a whole book that could be written on Steemit etiquette and the do’s and dont’s. But today’s rant is not about that.

This article is not about curation awards!

There’s a ton of great content already written on it, like this old but useful one by @liberosist.

This article is not to take away from the trending steemit celebrities, most of them might deserve what they earn.

This article is just to highlight the horrendous crime that is committed on Steemit each and every day, and which can be fixed by a simple change in our attitudes.

As a part of my @ocd duties, I get to curate a lot of content on Steemit.

Scanning the lengths and breadths of Steemit to find an undiscovered and undervalued gem in not an easy task, but I realized it’s not that difficult a job as well, thanks to the attitude that Steemians have cultivated post HF-19.

Why is it tough?

Well, for one. Most of the newbies that join Steemit, or even some of the veterans don’t realize that Steemit is a place that encourages originality and thrives on creativity.

One might not be the greatest of writers or the best photographer in town, but being original with your content and improving your skills over a period of time is something that will give you long term success.

Copy pasting content will get you a visit from that ‘animal’ who shall not be named here.

And then there are the identity thieves who think they are damn smart to take on the Steemit identity of public figures. Why? To gain some quick bucks that might fall their way.

Don’t worry, each one of the offenders will be caught sooner or later. It’s better to mend your ways while you have time.

So this is what the TOUGH part of curation is - to verify identities, to check the originality of content, etc.

Why is it not so tough?

Steemit is growing at a great pace, which means we have an influx of talented people from across the globe.

Hidden underneath the mountain of Follow4Follow and Upvote4Upvote spammers are gems which are silently going about doing the crazy talented things they do:

  • sharing their mindbogglingly impressive artistic works,
  • stories that melt your heart and touch your soul,
  • food photography that makes you want to eat your screen,
  • travelogues that are not sponsored by money but are all heart and soul.

Yes, nobody achieves overnight success on Steemit. But is it so hard for us to leave a genuine comment or a small vote on content that we like.

There’s so much great content around us:

Just today, I discovered a magician not just sharing magic tricks, but sharing food and smiles with the underprivileged.

Then there is a talented writer, who writes amazing stuff. But with no readers or votes, it’s like a candle that is giving light to an empty room.

In a way, Steemit has to evolve into a culture where there is a more balanced distribution of attention. How it can be achieved is a the topic for a different post altogether.

Till then, we need as many curators as there are content creators to encourage and motivate the brilliant work our community is creating.

What you need to do is to change - Cast your vote among your followers, or the ones you follow. You might have followed them for a reason. We might not be able to do it often, but we can try to do it once in a while. We have a 7 day payout system, you have 7 days to discover the amazing content Steemians have to offer. Use your votes and time on Steemit wisely.

Why I’m so proud to be a part of Team @ocd?

@acidyo came up with this brilliant initiative, and it's certainly making it's intended impact on Steemit.

I know that we’re making a difference.

We’re a team that knows what we want - to make authors posting consistent content on Steemit feel welcome.

And we will definitely get it done, with whatever resources and delegation is at our disposal.

We highlight talented stuff from undervalued authors, they get a platform to shine.

They might get a few more followers, they might even catch a whale’s attention.

But most importantly, they know there is someone watching out for them and their voices will be heard, if not now, then tomorrow.

Go discover a pearl today! - @jznsamuel

Exactly, thank you... when i first started i was upvoting "hot" articles, thinking it was part of "the thing to do". Now I check my feed and upvote my own selected people I'm following (mostly people in 40s and 50s rep), and always on the lookout for great new steemers to add to that list as well. TY / RESTEEM ... have a great day

yes, most people don't realize it initially :) keep up the good work!

I love @ocd man! I have said it before and I will say it again, you guys do a wonderful brilliant job! It's a service to the steemit community and I wish more and more amazing people get noticed.
Thank you for all the work you do!
Cheers 🍻

yes, you've been a very great supporter :) and a worthy nominee too! thanks bro...

Nice one, J. Trust I admire your work and this article has pointed me towards a better Steemit experience, for me and the other users. I want to be doing what you are doing at any capacity, starting hence. I didn't know you were in the PALnet group. Amazing.

thanks @misterakpan, PALnet is truly doing great things...

Thanks for this post - @jznsamuel . I do have a feeling that a more altruistic approach will prevail in the long run. It's easy (for me) to feel frustrated at times to think, and I may be wrong, that many followers are only hoping for one way voting traffic. However, I'll not fall into that trap. I'm here to learn, to build quality relationships based on mutual appreciation, and to share the spoils with those who reciprocate. At the same time, I'm devoting much effort trawling through the posts, looking for quality, not for a quick up vote buck, but because I'm interested in what's out there. The steem will come of its own accord - I hope :/

That's the right attitude, as steemit grows and enhances, we should be change makers instead of the crowd that comes and goes. thanks @steemmeupscotty!

You are doing an amazing job and i think Many people would throw in the towel early if it wasn't for the OCD Curating team. When you put in a lot of effort and your posts is unnoticed it hurts, and when it is saved by you guys and brought back to the surface it gives hope and appreciation. Thank you so much for your good work. One good method I found to allow my material to not fall through the cracks was to extensively focus on curating in the beginning and to find people that I would like to follow and that I would be genuinely interested in, hopefully they would also feel that they have something in common with me and folllow me back. This has worked and now when I post I have basically a guarantee that atleast some will read my material and if they like it they spread it forward. This way I don't rely on the luck of being found on the trending pages.

Truly delightful to discover hidden gems like you @dandesign86. and as @ocd grows, we only hope to make more impact in recognizing and rewarding authors. thanks for the lovely comment and gesture!

It's my pleasure and keep up the good work :)!

Can't thank you enough for this proactive gesture.

Should I call it a coincidence because just yesterday, I was worried sick going through posts on steemit and I saw well crafted articles with rich content not being voted for, or the way "steem power" works and the abuse or its misuse.

Imagine where a comment earn more than the article itself, I am not saying some comment aren't worth the vote but how do we balance it?

Thank you once again.

exactly, things like these can be frustrating, yet we need to have good things to counter the bad :)

Thank you very much for this inspiring and motivating post! I'm really new here, so please forgive me, if I'm not getting everything right already.

Although one of my posts actually made it to trending, I sometimes wonder, what it takes, for a post to get there. In my case, I figure, it was pure luck, that one person with incredible voting power liked my post well enough, to give me a big hand and heaved me up there. At first, I thought something was wrong... computer error or something. Couldn't believe it, when it slowly became more and more of a reality. That was a very encouraging experience.

Equally so was, when I found your comment today under my last post, where you awarded me with the discovery by the OCD Team. It is particularly rewarding, as I have enjoyed many posts promoted by them already.

You at the OCD Team make a big difference to many talented, passionate and committed steemians and I am deeply grateful for being included in your fine collection of quality content.
