My initial impressions of Steemit - and some resources
Overview
I've spent the last few days getting a high-level view of the Steemit ecosystem. Next I will start looking into Zappl and some of the other apps that run off the Steem blockchain. In this post, I focus on witnesses and bots.
Witnesses
From reading trending posts in #steem and #steemit, it looks like many users don't really understand how witnesses work. I see that's something many witnesses are trying to remedy, so I will leave the best explanation to them. I do recommend that users interested in really understanding Steem go through the top 50 witnesses and follow the ones that actively post.
I do have one question about witnesses though. In the white paper it says that witnesses set the interest rate on SBD. I haven't seen any reference to that in any of the articles about witnesses I've read on Steemit. Does anybody know if that's still a thing, or if their are resources showing that interest rate history? If not, I will be working with Power BI to analyze the blockchain at some point, and that will be one of my first projects.
Curation & Bots
I think the prevalence of bots is particularly interesting. Since the reward algorithms are particularly complicated, it is no surprise that people can improve their curation rewards by submitting their upvotes to a bot. I have mixed feelings about this, particularly as curation of valuable content is a huge part of what makes Steem valuable. I will go on the record now by saying that I have no intention to give my upvotes to the control of a bot. (This is easy for me since I already find it hard to ration my upvotes. I'm going to increase my steempower as quickly as I can so that I can use the sliding scale instead of always upvoting at 100%. That makes it easier to upvote everything that I think deserves it, even though it means my upvotes will be stingier than they otherwise would be. Power Up 100%!!
And while we're on the topic of bots and increasing steempower... I have also found many interesting resources on bidding bots and booster bots. My favorite resource so far is https://s3.amazonaws.com/yabapmatt/bottracker/bottracker.html which I will be using to improve my exposure.
Conclusions
I have been enjoying my Steemit experience so far (even though it almost made me late to work this morning) and I look forward to familiarizing myself with the other apps that make up the Steem ecosystem. Thank you to everyone that has entrusted me with your follows and upvotes.
