To increase labor rights, buyers will have to increase the cost of clothing
To strengthen Bangladesh's garment sector, prioritized access to the international market will be ensured. To consolidate labor rights, there is no alternative to raising the price of ready-made garment companies. Speaking at an international seminar on the garment sector of Bangladesh, organized by International Sustainable Development Institute (ISDI), Boston-based research institute at Harvard University in the US this Friday.
Prime Minister's Economic Adviser Mashiur Rahman gave the keynote speech at the seminar titled 'Multi-stakeholder coordination and initiative in transparency of sustainable garment sector in Bangladesh'. He said that the prices of Bangladeshi made garments are not available from foreign buyers. At the same time, there was not enough international credit and support for compliance in Bangladesh's garment sector. The pressures that are being given to Bangladesh to compliance and trade unions, the competitive countries are not being given the same amount of pressure.
But the government is taking various steps for the development of garment industry, and commenting on its hopes, Mashiur Rahman remarked.
Joel Reiffman, deputy chief of mission of the US Embassy in Bangladesh, said that he has visited various garment factories in Bangladesh. Organizations are being promoted internationally and are preparing themselves for competition in the world market.
Liaana Foxovog of the International Labor Organization said, after the Accord and Alliance came to Bangladesh, there was no major accident in the garment factory for several years. The government has arranged to increase workers' wages. However, a number of organizations are yet to be fully compliant.
Organizing organization Iqbal Yusuf said that organizing this international seminar at Harvard University for the fourth year. In the five sessions of the day, 30 speakers of the day highlighted the adversity of the industries of Bangladesh and the garment exporting countries of the world market. They also discussed the necessary assistance. As always, US, Bangladesh, Canada, Europe importers, fashion industry associations, US State Department and Labor Department, World Bank, labor organizers, researchers and educationists took part in this seminar.
