Top 5 Reasons Why Follow for Follow Sucks and Doesn't Work on Steemit! (With GIFs)

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

You might have seen it already. The trend from normal social media, especially Twitter, is here on Steemit. Newbie Steemians are doing follow for follow without knowing that it doesn't work on Steemit. It is a fact that having a good number of followers is helpful in getting your message across and get upvotes. But...

  • It doesn't mean that follow for follow works.
  • It doesn't ensure that your followers will get, or even want to get, your message.
  • It doesn't guarantee that you will end up getting more votes.

So, why does follow for follow not work on Steemit? Here are the top five reasons why you are better without the follow for follow trend.

1. Blind Following

One of the biggest Steemit mistakes people do is blind following. When you follow for follow, blind following is what you are doing. Blindly following others is destructive because it floods your feed with low quality posts.

Know who you follow. Follow quality Steemians and interact with them.

This is how blind following works.

2. Mass Following

Mass following means following huge number of people. It is different from blind following because it concerns the number of people rather than their quality. But, blind following which results from follow for follow is the ultimate culprit behind mass following.

I have seen people who follow thousands of profiles, may be in the hope to get followers back. But it not only fills your feed with crap but also those followers you get are useless.

The best followers are the ones who follow you out of liking or inspiration because you shared something which they found useful.

3. No Value Addition

When someone follows you to get a follow back (without having a look at you) , will he or she care about your blog or content? Absolutely not! Tell me honestly. Do you care about the thousands of profiles you follow just because of follow for follow?

Do you have a large number of followers who add no value to your blog or content through their detailed comments and deep interactions? Well, if you have, rethink about your strategy. Stop the follow for follow and start adding value to the platform.

Steemit rewards value addition. If a person adds no value to Steemit or you, why follow him/her?

PS: You can have a look at my comments to see how I interact with fellow Steemians.

4. Getting Useless Upvotes

Have you ever noticed the relation between the number of upvotes on your posts and the reward your posts get? I am more than sure that your rewards are nowhere near your desired level even if you get a good number of upvotes.

Why does this happen? Because the people you follow have an almost useless vote. They do not have enough reputation which means that they didn't get any rewards themselves as well. They have less or close to zero Steem Power and having no Steem Power means close to zero worth of upvote.

Even if you get a lot of upvotes, you will not get much reward because those upvotes do not have much worth.

Because you deserve it may be!

5. Repelling Good Steemians

Last but not the least, the worst consequence of "follow for follow" is that you automatically repel good Steemians. Why would @timcliff @blueorgy @aggroed @dragosroua @meesterboom @kus-knee and so many shining stars of Steemit interact with you?

PS: For God's sake, please do not send them follow for follow requests from here.

Stop the follow for follow trend. Start interacting in a valuable way and you'll find yourself in good environment on Steemit.

Conclusion

I am grateful to @dragosroua for covering the  5 stupid situations generated by Steemit growth in which he covered follow for follow at number one (and you must read and avoid the other four too)! My post is inspired by his great reasoning. I have spoken about "following" behaviors earlier but not with such detail as in this post.

This post hopes to achieve the following aims.

  • Practical advice to my followers to avoid the useless practice of follow for follow.
  • Educating new Steemians so that they could have a better start.
  • Creating a better community by getting rid of unwanted behaviors.
  • Reaching out to maximum people so that they can benefit from it (not possible without your resteems).
  • Stop the "follow for follow" trend and start sensible following behaviors and practices.

I hope you liked this post. I am thankful to you for reading this and grateful for your upvotes and resteems.

This is really informative and i am glad i found this. It is really important for newbies to learn this because you can only progress here on this platform if you follow the trend of those who have already established themselves here. My friend who inviting me to this platform @tj4real told me right from the start that communicating with people on this platform will get you to know who they are and what they stand for and if it is what you are interested in ,you join hands and growth starts to take place

Hey, how do you get these upvotes on the comments?

i use the esteem app and anytime i post something valuable with it, i get upvotes.

Wow! Sounds great. I'll start using it. I have it for a week now but didn't use. This is the first time I think. This comment is from eSteem app.

yes. it is really amazing.Hope u have fun using it.

Thanks. I just came to know that there's a trail to join too.

What is this trail about?

The curation trail of @good-karma on Streemian.

Thanks a lot for your valuable comment. Interactions such as your comment are the best thing to do on Steemit. Your comment naturally invites me to have a look at your profile and who knows I might end up following you. You never asked for a follow.

exactly. I just tell the truth and i know anyone who does that attracts positive wherever they find themselves. I am glad ive made an impart.

There is only one problem, People want to make money just money. They get upvotes and followers for money. They think that this shortcut is going to make their life better. But unfortunately, they are killing there passion for sake of money.
First we must follow our passion and then convert that passion in words and keep focus on writing. When we'll provide good content, there will be great followers who'll wait for our article and we'll generate good money.

This is such a great comment. This is the right mindset and the right attitude. Happy to see it from the very beginning. Keep doing things right. You'll ho places.

I totally agree. Shortcuts do not work. Hard work speaks for itself.

I strongly agree with you. When you follow people who are not adding any value to the community you are making yourself distant from the good quality posts, you'll miss a lot of posts related to how the platform works because of thousands of useless posts in your feed and become unable to understand the platform completely.
If you want to be followed by the shinning stars of steemit, improve the quality of your work and do sincere interactions with others you'll automatically attract quality people towards your blog.

Great comment @ayeshanor and thank you for it. You can make a nice post out of it by adding a few paragraphs.

Thank you for the idea and appreciation :)

well briefed post and i have experienced your points. no doubt these points are very useful.

Thanks for reading and sharing your experiece. We should choose people as carefully as we do in case of friends.

You've written the post I feel was bubbling up inside of me ;) Good job. Now let's see if this gets any "follow me" chodes in the comments...keep on steemin' on

Hahaha! Sorry! You can still write it up and share because everyone brings in a unique perspective.

It would be ironic to see a follow for follow request on this post. Last thing to expect here.

I love a good bit of irony! On the same note, here's my entry in the meme challenge1soaes.jpg

and for context - please watch

Feel like I'm just going to repeat many of the other comments, but from the first day I started using steemit, this follow me cuz I just followed you stuff seemed like the creeps trying to find a friend when you get a new job- no one follows you for a reason. I'm still getting a handle on who I really want to follow. I have to experiment for a few posts and give people I put in my feed a chance. I want to be followed, but I want to be followed because people can't wait to read one of my new posts and shoot the bull a little bit with me, I would hope that's what others want as well. I'm looking forward to the day that eighty percent of my feed is something I really want to click on, and 100% of what I post is worth reading. Quality interaction is the name of the game! ...Actually, that sounds like a terrible name for a board game. I would not buy that board game.

Absolutely agreed! You amplify my opinion even further. Great thoughts @travelman about following patterns on Steemit. I would love to be followed for what I contribute.

4F4 (had to say it) I am learning real well that those who post that will get nothing from me and am following some good folks here at steemit. Shared it for the followers I have in hopes to get them here reading and following you...

Thanks a lot for your support.

You provide great content, why wouldn't I follow?

Thanks a lot. Your comment supports my argument indeed.

this is very informative thank you for sharing this and as ive seen from my experience is share true stuff and put plenty of info about what ever it is your sharing

This post helped me understand yet another level of Steemit and I thank you for that. I do not do the 'follow for follow' routine.
I follow people on here that have the same interests as myself but I also look at the new, trending and hot posts. Sometimes I read and comment but not always. I have been on here for less than a week so my rating is quite low, but I imagine over time it will grow larger.

Thanks for your feeback. You'll enjoy higher ratings as you engage more people. 37 in one week is quite good actually. Keep growing and Steem On!

PS: My blog is always here to guide in one way or another.

thank you! I keep reading info for all newcomers and every day learn a new detail about Steemit. So far I am liking what I see.

I hope to deliver valuable information and tutorials in the future as well.
