Potential Steem-Powered Projects // Assemble Studio's Collective Model

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Hello everyone! First off, Happy New Year!! I know we've been away for too long but it's because the team at Hither Yon is setting up for a big year on and around Steemit...

Beginning in 2017, Hither Yon will be fully pushing for physical impact through the Steemit platform. From all the conversations we've had with so many incredible users, there is definitely an interest in applying this energy and collective concentration on making real change on the ground.

I (Michael here!) will personally be in Korea for a few weeks (follow my meandering here) so during this travel and work, I thought I could start these discussions with a few case studies on how other groups and projects begin to bring about change without traditional funding and social models.

To give you an idea of what we mean by “Steem-Powered Projects,” check out some of our old articles -

First off, an incredible collective that burst out onto the UK scene a few years ago, even snagging the prestigious Turner Prize for Art in 2015. They're a model that we... well... attempt to model after and a fantastic starting point in starting off with Steem-Powered Projects.

A Ragtag Team of Change-Makers

Assemble studio roared onto the main stage of the architectural profession with their very unique, very unorthodox projects. All centered around immediate community and neighborhood problems, these 15 original members (and now a team of about 18) dedicated themselves to immediate local concerns. They built what they could for who they could, even with the great limitations of student budgets and construction inexperience. Founded in 2010, the group started with very simple projects – stackable chairs, public murals, and other little person-scale projects.

Samples of the work we’ll be looking at -

  • Folly For a Flyover

  • The CINEROLEUM Theater in a Retrofit Abandoned Gas Station

They aren't your typical founders with their surnames in company title or fancy individual positions. In fact, nowhere do they advertise any personal bios. They are in fact simply Assemble. They're the professional manifestation of what many designers have sought in a capitalistic world where ego and power rule. They're a true collective that embraces a lack of hierarchy, embraces a horizontal approach to creative development instead of a top-down one.

More Posts on New Models

It pains me to stop the post here, but I'm currently on the road and have to conserve a bit of my brainpower and time. But I'm absolutely not done with looking at Assemble as a respectable model. Throughout this week, I'll present my findings on their model, mission, portfolio projects, and other aspects as well as my observations. From what I've seen so far, they've been so focused on their human-impact model that there is little written analysis on them as sub-field in themselves. So I'll attempt that over the next few days!

This new non-traditional approach to working together is facinating to me and incredibly heartening. An antidote to a lot of the doom and gloom potentials out there!

Yes! I'd love to see more work like this being publicized as a way of doing art, design, and architecture. I believe it gives great purpose to the work and more importantly gives people who aren't already in the profession and opportunity to engage in its value.
