OPEN LETTER TO STEEMIT, ET AL

WHY STEEMIT CANNOT WORK

I chose the following words carefully. Please exercise the same care in reading them.

This explanation is based on the premise that "artists" (writers, photographers, painters, and so on) are necessary to the Steemit equation to attract "readers" (those who read or view material posted by artists) to the website.

The reason Steemit cannot work is simply that artists and bitcoin aficionados are entirely different and incompatible groups of people. Their primary difference is that artists think with the right side of their brains and bitcoin aficionados necessarily think with the left side of their brains.

In practical terms, this means most bitcoin aficionados embrace technology, while most artists see it more as a necessary evil. Taking this point a step further, artists have little patience for technical procedures that must be followed before a goal is accomplished. If whatever we're trying to do in the computer world doesn't work after the second or third try, even if the reason has to do with our lack of understanding, we artists tend to say, "To Hell with it," and move on.

That, plainly and simply, is why Steemit cannot work. Next question: Can Steemit be "fixed" so it works for both groups?

I like to think Steemit could be made work, but that may be wishful thinking. From an artist's perspective, the necessary changes would probably have to include:

  1. An absolutely 100% foolproof website platform with ample ways to back up and redo procedures that don't "turn out right."

  2. Eliminating 95% of tech-speak, thus keeping explanations and instructions simple and straight-forward with no ambiguity.

  3. Enhanced recognition of, and rewards for, artists' accomplishments.

  4. A concentrated recruitment effort to bring successful, and verifiably established artists (masters of their crafts) into the Steemit fold.

Steemit, et al, I leave the matter in your hands.

H. P. Oliver

I agree, we are fundamentally different groups. I'm sure there are a handful that dabble in both areas, but speaking for myself, I'm definitely on the right brain list.

Thank you. I understand that some of what I wrote sounds "elitist," but that's what makes a Picasso a Picasso. If everybody could do it, we wouldn't need the Louvre or libraries.

Very well put Oliver... may I go on a rant? - Well, you can't tell me if yes or no, so I will carry on as if you agreed.

It's still very, very early in the game. But yes, everything you have pointed out I have to agree with you 100% because it's verifiable, very much so.

However, lets go down memory lane for a second or two. Let's talk nerd talk for a minute.

Linux, did it succeed?

Some say no, of course not. The whole revolution of an open source system was a fad, intellectual pornography if you will for the geekiest among us. Who today uses linux, who?

Surprisingly, its actually the #1 operating system in the world, but almost nobody knows it is, almost Nobody.

For all I know you read this comment of mine on an android phone, guess what operating system it is? Yes, that is right linux. But, who knew? Its so easy to use, so simple, you did not have to compile a Kernel to dial your friend.

The new thermostats are also pretty awesome, I think the way they can be programmed depending on times of the day and seasons make them super convenient. Guess what operating system they are using? Yes, that's right Linux... But all you have to do is press two button.

My point is, that open source took over, linux took over ten fold above microsoft, above mac, and nobody knows. That is how mass adoption looks.

Steemit was never meant to take over facebook, Steemit is the equivalent of us nerds (im one of them) taking apart our 486 SX computers installing a insufferable version of an ugly operating system that refuses to obey, but its free, and everyone can help make it better.

On that note, this website is running on a linux server, and I'm using a linux computer.

Back to Steemit

What you are asking for will come, very soon actually, we call them SMTs. By then steemit might be like that old phone you keep on the drawer, the flip phone, but, you are going to have all the knowledge, and have a big, a huge advantage.

You would be an early adopter and your new phone calls everywhere for free.

Okay if I'm honest here? I will proceed as if you said yes.

You just wrote a terrific example of what I'm talking about. You lost me right after "Very well put," although I do recall something about "for free."

If I knew your mailing address I would send you a sign like the one hanging over the proof copies of the 13 novels I currently have in print. The sign says, "Keep it simple, Stupid." (No insult intended.)

hahahah my friend, lets say this...

If you stay in the trenches with us, 5 year older you, will thank today you a ton... I'm sure of it.

Okay, I understood most of that, especially the "If" part. Now I would like to ask a favor of you. It's not a big favor. All I want you to do is read what you just typed.

Oliver, by any chance are you using Discord (its a chat program, free to use as well) - I would like to invite you to a little group. I think I can be of help, I seriously do.

https://discordapp.com/

You can run it on your browser or you could download the desktop program.

I know it's more to learn, but I promise, I've helped so many people understand these complicated waters, I got some tricks.

Steem needs a growing base of authors.

But the user experience leaves a lot to be desired.

Agreed. If it wasn't for @johnjgeddes, I never would have gotten into Steemit far enough to post anything. It just doesn't need to be that comlex (sounding).
