Promoting Steemit -- Results from one week of ads
Last week after seeing the posted results from steemit referral in a thread by @ash I decided to try an experiment. I took out some paid ads on reddit and adbit.co just to see what would happen. I put $25 into ads $10 on reddit spread across /r/bitcoin /r/btc and /r/cryptocurrency and about $15 worth of banner ads on adbit spread across 21 days. So that's about $15 for this one week test.
Results from reddit were 26,439 ads with 93 clicks. Not too bad.
Adbit.co gives you a lot more ads for the money. Here you can see almost 4.5 million ads with 429 clicks. You might think that is better than reddit but it depends on the quality of those clicks. With reddit people usually don't click unless they are interested. With banner ads you get a lot of "false clicks" where people or bots clicks them by mistake.
So those are the initial results. I will not know for sure if it did any good unless @ned releases the stats for how many referrals people got last week.
Original Promoting Steemit thread
Update: Due to the positive response to this thread so far I will be extending this experiment at least another week.
Thanks for posting this and for running ads. I really, really wish some sort of referral program was implemented to reward and incentivize advertising, while protecting against spam. Please see my two major suggestions for boosting Steemit adoption here:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@trending/suggestion-let-s-attract-new-users-by-ending-liquidity-rewards-and-adding-referral-rewards-i-know-i-m-not-the-first-to-suggest

Some incentive for referring people would be nice. If that existed I would continue to run this experiment and probably even expand it.
I wouldn't do it myself until the incentives were in place, but once they were and if they were profitable, I'd crank it up to a 10. To the best of my knowledge there still hasn't been any replacement of the liquidity rewards, I think that amount would best be used to promote referrals. Word-of-mouth will be the best fuel for Steemit adoption.
In addition to this, would it not be equally possible to offer a reward incentive, much as is already in place for upvoting or commenting, for hitting the share feature? Or am I late to the party and this has already been done and dusted?
I really hope so. It doesn't even have to be done at a protocol level, they have the referral data already. I guess they're worried about encouraging phony sign ups? Or maybe they think we're growing fast enough already..
@fubar-bdhr great results!
I'm not sure. I haven't been around since launch so maybe there's some reason they don't implement referral rewards, but I really don't think it would be too difficult to build-in, though.
As far as I know there has never been any reward for referrals. Wasn't even sure referral links actually worked until last week when those stats came out.
I just posted it as a suggestion over on Steemit.chat on the General and #Steemit-suggestions channels.
Otherwise, I have no idea of how to get the ears of the shakers and movers. Maybe someone will pick the idea up :)
I had just assumed that was the whole point of the referral code, they must have thought of it but put it on the backburner for some reason.
