BEING NEW ON STEEMIT - IT'S HARD!
Let's be honest.
Can you even imagine being a completely new user on steemit again?
It was hard back then to gain the following, but nowadays it is even harder! People are registering onto steemit even in this exact second.
Have you seen the current new tab? With so many new people joining and posting content, the new tab is a big bloat of everything.
Your post will probably stay on top of the new tab for a couple of seconds and after that it will suddenly be on second or third page, because there is a really huge amount of steemians creating content. If you don't have any following already, the new tab will probably not help you at all with getting new followers or upvotes.
Being a new user is just depresful!
And those were just some of the posts that were created 5 minutes ago! Can you find yourself there? Having your post "advertised" only on the new tab is probably the worst idea mostly because of the thing I said previously. Your post will just not visible enough to gain any bigger traction!
What you should do is to expand yourself to more places.
You can use the promote button to get into the promoted tab. I don't think it's worth to pay more than 1 SBD for being there as this tab is very saturated too. On the other hand, you will always get an upvote from the @promoted account by using the button.
You can also put some nice comments below people's posts so they will get to know you better. Sometimes you can even mention your own posts without it looking like a spam. However, that only works if you have something more to say about the topic.
I also learned that a lot of people are not only on steemit, but most of the time they hang-out on the discord channels too. If you would like to present your post somewhere, I advice you to go to the post promotion channels on these discords.

Being new on the platform is just really hard and I honestly love to browse the new tab and upvote some great content, but it is actually very difficult to find these posts.
I am really missing one feature and I hope it will be added in Velocity (hardfork 20) somehow. I would like to be able to choose myself what tags and topics will be seen on the new tab.
Right now you have to browse all the tags at the same time or just browse one exact tag. We should be able to filter it. Just clicking each tag and then checking the posts is very slow, time-consuming and just not fun.
I was thinking of something like this. You would click the button, choose the tags and save it. Then on the new tab you would only see the tags you chose.
We should also be able to add and search for our own tags that we would like to see. On the tags and topics list are only the top used tags right now.
Maybe there could also be a bin button, where we would be able to put away tags that we are not interested in.
That is actually another big problem with tags in general on steemit. People will always use the same ones, because those tags will yield the most upvotes and comments.
I really don't know what to expect from the Velocity update. What do you think will come? Will something like this be available later on? There are so many hidden talents on the platform, but they will probably stay hidden without updates like these. Hopefully that will change very soon. :)

For newbies the best thing you can do to get the most Steem is post thoughtful comments on other people's posts till you have built enough steem/sbd to promote your own posts.

I remember myself as a newbie and you are right, it was hard. At that time attention of @curie was only one way to promote your posts. And it was not worse times.
But being a curator is not easier job. Now, in one hand, users have much more options and channels for promotion, free and paid. In another hand we have more users, who use these tools, but not everyone of them are producing a quality content.
Pictures and YouTube links without any explanation, plagiarism, rewrited guides "how to be successful" for newbies from another newbies, rewrited wiki articles, spam, beggers for upvotes/followers - we have tons of this on Steemit now. For man, who is curating posts manually is hard to find something valuable. That's why I stopped to check "New". Sorry🙁

I feel you... even I who's not curator don't like the "new" right now... I can search new in anime/gaming/programming...etc but I wish there was better indexing system so we can search more specifically.
I'm searching for curators for my "best" posts... can I contact you? I promise I'll only send my "Best" to you... the posts that I spend a lot of time on.
Exactly the update I want to happen!! and want it soon... even the search feature here isn't as good as other websites.
We need a better indexing/filtering system... I like the one used in https://archiveofourown.org but due to how steemit work it won't be possible. (it's also very easy to abuse)
Oh the search function doesn't even work half the time! I think the implementation would be easy, but steemit will be adding different thing - communities. Can't really say that I know how will that work.
I do remember..... 13 mths later almost and I write all my post usually to help out new people and still relate.

i took some time but finally i read this and found a few tips for myself (as a new one on steemit)
it was funny to find the crypto in the "delete tag" but instead the "weather" put a "photography" or even "filmphotography" that i use everyday but you will find the only last 7 days of this uncurated tag, but still you will find some of my images :-)

thank you. btw i tried the "promote" option for the first time yesterday after the reading of your recommendations in a few posts. i paid for new post slready upvoted 26 times during a few hours. i got nothing new after promoting. no commrnts no feedbacks and ipvotes. something goes wrong here on steemit !? can you explain me please ?
Well with 1 SBD you get what you have paid for and that is, the upvote from the @promoted account.
If you check the latest posts in the "promote" tab you can see that you really have to pay a lot to even be on the first page. It's worth just because of that upvote. You will not get that much more engagement by this, because you didn't get into the "hot" or "trending" tab. :)
This is a great post and as a new steemit user or relatively new I agree. By not having the tools to get your post seen and causing people to go off site to discord or other tools to get it seen is a gap that needs to be fixed.
Hopefully communities will resolve these problems.
Solid idea about the tags. That would be pretty fun. Might get echochamber - y though. Do we have a wrestling channel yet?
