I wrote a piece about a concerning aspect of the Steem Price and steemit.com the other day. It demonstrated, via steemit data, that there was a case of abuse of privilege to be investigated. Of course, that is up to each person to decide.
Today that post was down-voted to zero by @matt-a - I did not know of @matt-a until yesterday. He posted a very self-congratulatory post about powering-up 81,000 steem.
I checked into his account and found this: "2 hours ago Start power down of 99,305.578 STEEM"

@matt-a claims that this is how the account is always managed and has been since the beginning. The account was opened in July 2016 and then became dormant for 7 months until the HF changes allowed a proliferation of accounts and encouraged the delegation of SP to demonstrate `"decentralisation".
@matt-a is playing within the rules to very quickly increase the reputation of this account. He is then free to raise the rep of another several accounts to maximise the leveraged benefits he has. Maximising one's return is quite natural, though the permissions to behave so are deplorable.
No problem there is there, Steemit Inc.?
But why abuse the leverage and stake-weight you have to try to intimidate those who have less?
Maybe, @matt-a, you feel that the possibility that there is a case of price manipulation and insider trading warrants no scrutiny?
The presence of three times the views over votes should raise anybody's eyebrows.
With absolutely no apology at all, you simply call for people like me to scrutinise further.

I flagged your post because it WAS/IS misinformation, is inaccurate, and is a stupid conspiracy theory with no basis in reality. I've never seen someone so self-righteous as to complain about someone creating a platform, FOR FREE, that PAYS YOU, for doing next to nothing. That's like calling a good charity a bunch of assholes or getting pissed because they only gave you a full month's worth of food instead of two months worth for one month for free, asking for nothing in return. You are a spoiled child. Also, learn to take criticism, because you obviously are incapable of it currently. Maybe that's why you're so wrapped up in yourself?
In summation: You suck, and I will flag your posts that I think do not deserve rewards. After this behavior and stupid rhetoric, I honestly think that you're undeserving of this platform. I'm truly not worried or anything, but he's truly being a downer for the community with his threats and blatant FUD.
That's how I saw it in one of his posts too, and I've seen a lot of FUD over the years.
The last thing we need is someone on a fake high-horse spouting bullshit about how this is all rigged as if they know everything when they clearly don't understand how this all comes together. Less technical people will eat that up and believe it, and word of mouth spreads quickly, especially conspiracy theory laden trash like that.
Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth . . . What a shame . . .

Yep! Exactly. Out of curiosity, I dug for like 5 minutes and uncovered pretty much all of his social media accounts (which he doesn't protect) along with a lot of personal details. Of course I'd never post or expose any of it due to me not being an asshole and having a moral code while being an ethical person, I just find it funny that he makes pretty severe threats like this while he himself is wide open . . .
I guess he doesn't really realize that I work in the computer security field professionally . . . :-/

@ebryans It's very interesting that this platform rewards the rich with the ability to control what content can and cannot be seen. I'm confident was not as intended by the creators. It also takes a lot of fun out of it when you have a successful post become worthless with a single vote. Rich curators with a common goal and purpose become the centralized power and control what is seen. Do you have any insight into how the algorithm handles this? Is there any true governance to correct it?
It was intended. There are two things here: (1) the Steem blockchain and (2) steemit.com
The Steem blockchain is very resistant to censorship. However rewards are given based on stake weighted popularity, so while posts cannot be censored, rewards are a game of votes.
steemit.com is run by Steemit Inc. and as a company based in the USA they have certain obligations. If you read the terms of service you'll see a lot of standard stuff which is basically boils down to forms of censorship, i.e. restricting the kind of information they will allow to be displayed on the steemit.com website and other services Steemit Inc. provides. This includes copyright infringement, viruses, even false or misleading information. It's a pretty wide remit.
Here's what they say in the whitepaper about censorship and this in particular:
I see this confusion again and again and I think that Steemit need to do more in their onboarding to make this crystal clear to new users.
This is called collusion in the terminology used. This is a recognized problem, and the current solution seems to be that anything with a lot of votes is held up to public scrutiny and so very visible, which is supposed to make people constantly question "do these posts deserve these rewards?". In the 6 months I've been here I've seen different dramas blow up about collusion and so I see that the system works in a messy kind of way.
But the bottom line, which I'm sure you're thinking now, is that we must have a variety of users with large enough stake for this to work. This is very true and it is not clear that this balance has been achieved. Hopefully as more users join we will see more variety of large stake but unfortunately the early adopters have been able to grab a lot of influence which they will retain.
I'm interested in ways to mitigate this advantage (such as reducing relative influence between the most and least influential), as it's pretty significant, but I don't think it's overly problematic at present.

I would suggest it as a service to the whole community. The data is there before you. Tell me and everyone else why it is SO laughable and we will laud you for your insights and ability to read such data and extrapolate a different set of explanations therefrom.
Again, refusal - or simply ignoring such a suggestion - is the admission of guilt.
