This is interesting. I wasn't even aware of this occurring.
Even though it's entirely logical and understandable to take a fair fee, I didn't expect the percentages to be so high on some of these.
Does steemit take a cut?

steemit.com and busy.org both appear to take 0 percentage. If they took benefactor rewards it would show up the same way on your steemd.com page though.

Good to know!
Thanks for the info :)

Part of me wonders if they ever intend to take a cut.
Another part wonders what they have planned for the 75% or so of all existing steem that they seem to hold- That's an entirely different discussion however xD

Do you think that 15-30% benefactor rewards is adequate?
How about considering the platforms that utilized ICO funds for development?

I am not a developer and I can't really say what a fair percentage is as I don't know how much work went into these apps and how large the user base is or anything like that. I am sure that the funds held by steemit inc is what they have to essentially "pay the bills" during development and such. Whatever percentage they hold, it's in their best interest to add value to the platform because as they expend those funds on development they do run down. The more value the tokens have = more funds for development and jobs from steemit inc. The cool thing about a blockchain is that if they somehow fail, the witnesses are developing different front ends that are now competing with them, so if they fail to maintain the "flagship standard" they will be replaced by another front end. The currency is not directly tied to the success of the company.

Good points!
I know of a few amazing witnesses that are capable of great things.
I also see a couple that are either inactive or purely looking out for their own bottom line.
While you're right that it's not directly tied to the success of the company, I hope it becomes a bit more evenly distributed across responsible parties xD

If only I was smart enough to actually accomplish any of my criticisms lolol.

Would be cool if everything was transparent, also the bills that are being paid.

Wow great post.
I don't have a problem with developers earning, otherwise they wouldn't do it.
But I think it is fair that those % be CLEARLY stated upfront, not hidden in pages of "conditions". Your post has highlighted the issue. Hopefully devs will take note, else down the track "surprises" might loose them a big audience.

I agree and while I don't know where the disconnect is, I'm just running across people claiming they had no idea they were losing percentages of their payouts etc. People get upset when they feel like they are misled and I have met many of these devs on my time on steemit and I don't feel that any of them are being inherently shady or anything like that. I just don't know what the actual issue is for people not knowing this information as I don't use those services personally. Hopefully bringing the issue to light and providing some transparency will help alleviate some issues.

Wow...I had no clue either! The devs certainly have a right to earn, but the costs associated with any applications should be stated upfront so as to remain free from taint. I guess their viewpoint would be that the information is there if you look hard enough. Anyway, great investigative information and much appreciated.

Perhaps that would be beneficial too. Development costs, server fees, things like that could be made transparent. Thanks for checking it out and thanks for the resteem.

It's good to highlight this. I have faced the same puzzlement when I tell people that other apps take a cut. It just doesn't seem to be stated clearly enough.

I have nothing against taking a cut, indeed Iam all for it as app developers need to get funded but I do think that to be taking a 35% cut is taking the piss. It's too high and not sustainable. If you want a large user base you have to be realistic about the numbers and users are not going to be happy with that. Especially when they get a big payout and wonder where over a third of their money has gone.

It shows short termism which in itself does not instill the greatest of confidence.

I tend to agree, but I'm also wondering if they intend to release SMT tokens for those platforms as well. I could imagine that there will eventually be apps that take 100% author rewards and pay out in SMT. I think they would have to be very established and have a loyal community beforehand though.

Yeah, the tokens too would have to have a credible value. I never even thought of that before. Ouchy. It could very well be. i heard that Zappl was intending to issue their own SMT

Good point yeah 35% is a bit too much. Mypoic culture can easily take hold.

Good to know. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting. I, as other have stated, had no idea this was the case. I also agree that devs should get paid. Knowing that these benefactor payments exist is something that should be common knowledge. Thanks for bringing it to light.

This is really important information. While I have no interest in Zappl (I don't tweet either, I don't see the value in it), some people are very excited for it. I think the usability issues of dtube have stopped a lot of people from using it, and the cut they are taking will probably make that worse.

Personally, I wasn't able to watch a video on it the last few times I clicked a link so I just stopped trying. I'm hoping it gets sorted out though.

Yes agreed that developers of applications deserve to get paid for what the community feels are valuable apps and services. Its their right and no body will have different opinion. Thanks for sharing such valuable and informative post.

Wow awesome discovery. So how come people do not know of this zappl method of taking so much? Thank you for telling me,

The only service I use outside of steemit.com to interact with the blockchain is busy.org and I'm not sure if users are overlooking this information or if it's not being made available. I do believe that devs should be paid for their work and I leave it up to all users to determine what percentage they think is fair by which app they choose to use.

Well i believe in your analysis, most times these calculations are not really done well but i believe esteem is doing very well if you have used it

Good to know. Thanks for sharing.
