EOS - Should Steemit.inc take a position on all our behalf?

If you have read anything about EOS, then you may have concluded that it just might present a significant threat to our young Steem network and economy. The threat comes from the fact that EOS, should it deliver (and I have two or three powerful reasons to believe it will....bitshares, steem, peerplays,) it will offer unrivalled performance, scaling and interoperability to the platforms and applications that launch within it. I could very well be wrong, but that leads me to consider that someone could very easily launch a Steem competitor with EOS. They may even attempt to split our community by offering one thing and another in order to poach network effect and create disharmony within steem. Given that is a possibility, I think Steemit.inc and all Steemians should consider the value of using some Steem to buy a stake in EOS over their year long distribution.

If EOS delivers, then at the very least we will all share an equal stake in what may well be the blockchain technology that finally asserts itself as the premier solution. The stake could be used as a buffer from competition or could directly pay for us all to migrate into EOS, thereby protecting our community.

Naturally it is for whoever controls the Steemit account to decide. I hope they are open to discussing a suggestion like this. A lot of people have strong ideas about the Steemit account, I'm no different. I know that further development of Steemit will not need anything like 134 million dollars. That level of dominance in the Steem economy is in danger of becoming an obscene liability to it's viability. This fact has been, I believe acknowledged by Steemit.inc and there may be plans being made on how to address it....I wished they moved a little faster but I guess it is quite the challenge.

The idea has already been floated within the bitshares community. We should start discussing it now as there is no time to lose.

Dan said that whether Steemit brings EOS on board or not is entirely up to the Steemit team. I also hope they do, but it's up to them at the end of the day. Good post!

If the steemit community wants EOS onboard then steemit.inc team must respect it, else they will be soon just be a team to be remembered (RIP).

I like how steemit.inc leaves the decision to the community. It greatly reinforces the overall user focus that makes this platform special. I hope it all turns out well!

surely it will turn around

No one know about future, keep calm and get followers , EOS / steemit all the best

Thank you for letting me know that. It is highly promising. Now is the time to have the discussion then. I sincerely hope they are up for it.

On the contrary, thank YOU!

Most likely it will happen.

what does EOS do that any of the other thousand coins cant do? I'm highly skeptical of this coin but am looking for reasons to like it.

follow me on twitter for more #crypto news, comments, memes, questions, and shittalking... https://twitter.com/bitchimlying

As someone very new to all this , I'm always asking myself that!

When generally people agree on a coin that's reassuring, but since that rarely happens enough what's much better is a coin is quite divisive but I can understand basically why. That way I can have a better idea what chance I want to take with it, even if I'm not too sure what's going on!! hahah!

It makes it so that normal people can use blockchain without even knowing it.

Blockchain backend, familiar .com front end.

No downloading of an entire blockchain or a special browser. Anything a user prefers will do.

Thank you for sharing I just followed you and upvoting your post. I look 👀 forward to watching you become a great success here on Steemit🤓🙌🏾, re-Steem this post below on your page for a chance to win 100 Steem dollars , it will also help you earn the most out of steemit

EOS actually puts EVERY Ethereum Based "Plattform" or "Coin" in jeopardy of being cloned so to speak....

But EOS will not be around for a YEAR or so... I think.
Can they operate without a "COIN".. The coin will not be released for a 12 months..
Lots could happen. It will only benefit the entire community if they work Together in some way.. If that is even possible with the ETH and EOS..

Makes me want to dabble in coding..... I need 10 years back!! lol

Thank you for the very insightful post. This is very urgent and I would have to agree with you on WOrking it out asap before the Egg is hatched.

Absolutely not. It doesn't make any sense at all. Should EOS buy-up a significant portion of Steem on all of EOSians behalf?

They are separate projects going their own way.

Besides the fact, EOS crowdsale is designed to run on for another year so there is no reason to buy any EOS right now for anyone.

Agreed! Steem isn't in the business of investing in ICOs....it's a blogging community. Makes absolutely no sense to speculate on what EOS may do a year or two from now.

Why are you upvoting your comment for $69 dollars may I ask? It certainly isn't worth that I fear.

I am using my SP to participate on Steemit in an effective manner. Pretty reductive answer on your part.

Should Steemit also buy stakes in Ethereum, Dfinity, Tezos, Qtum, and Lisk?

It's your SP, I thought generally that people were trying not to upvote themselves. My apologies.

No apologies needed, we're all in this together. HF19 is flawed but we're on a path to making Steem great.

Indeed. Thanks for your courtesy.

Great......i just followed you. Togetherness is really important in every community

If you use your stake to benefit yourself at the expense of your peers you will only be harming your own stake along with everybody elses.

Who's to say that I am not benefiting my peers by being active and onboarding new users and creating new categories? Or by my continually buying Steem and powering it up? I am one of the largest net buyers of Steem in its history and have been active and posted many articles, comments, and professional grade analyses. If you want more power on Steem, buy more Steem Power and put less of your money into EOS.

I think it is good to upvote your own comments...when I take the time to write something nice, I always give it a bit of an upvote.

After HF19 I've seen myself use smaller upvotes on comments, my full power vote is now worth $20!!! Which is wild, and really cool. I've had to stop and ask myself more often, how much is this comment actually worth? If I was up-voting on someone else's comment, what would I give them?

I think because he can :D

Meh, why go there?

I honestly wanted to know. I thought people were trying not to upvote their own comments and stuff. It's his SP, I'm over it. :)

Yeah and I can understand that as I myself don't vote on own comments but it just made it look like you were evading his discussion instead. :P

Ha! Sorry, just took me by surprise is all but he's right, we're in this together though we must take the approaches that make sense to us.

Several are upvoting themselves including me, I have looked over many people and places around here and have not seen if this was acceptable or not, to me it feels odd to upvote my own comments.

I think you may have missed the point a little. EOS is like an OS for blockchain apps. It can run hundreds, maybe thousands of steem/steemits within it and they would be able to interoperate along with additional performance.

I think you might be missing the point. Why should Steemit hype and buy another project?

Should Steemit also buy stakes in Ethereum, Dfinity, Tezos, Qtum, and Lisk? It can potentially run on any of them. And some of them even are live today!

All of those projects you mention could be toast and should consider doing the same as I'm suggesting for Steem if they believe that EOS has cracked the scalability limitations of single threaded performance. If EOS can act like an OS for a blockchain economy, it would be crazy for any project that could be replicated within EOS and benefit from advantages not to invest and plan to build or migrate within it.

You do know that EOS hasn't launched yet and claims are claims? A a year ago Dan said that everything would be run on Steem...

Exactly. All these claims about what EOS is and can do....actually, it can't do any of those things today. Also, I'm starting a time machine ICO...great time to invest in that space.

If you promise everything, people will keep believing just so long as you never actually launch a product. When you actually launch an over promised dream blockchain that was over funded, everyone will be disappointed by the onset of reality.

That's my biggest thing...it's easy to talk big, show us the chain!!!

Fair enough. I believe I've seen enough to be concerned. It took a couple of months to build and launch steem and Steemit, a year to get to this. Advantages are hard enough to come by.

That's my point wrt EOS. Claims are great, reality is hard. Bold claims require vetting and proof, not credulity.

This is why Steem is one of the most impressive blockchain projects because it is being used today by people and it works. It's not theoretical, it's not a pre-release project that is having an ICO designed to raise an insane amount of money (and be gamed by the ICO issuer itself (they can reinvest ICO proceeds into the ICO and manipulate the price up and down...sigh, never play a game designed by someone who is better at games than you are)), it's something which women and men are using today to connect on and write on and Steem on.

I love Steem and Steemit and what is growing as a result. I couldn't be in more agreement concerning evidence and effectiveness. I accept completely that until EOS is proven, we should keep working and making the Steem magic happen. But, given the resource available today and the possibility (backed by Steem and bitshares) that EOS is a big step forward...it might be worth so planning and preparation. Steem and Steemians are unimaginably precious after all.

A year ago Dan didn't have a $100 million in VC funding, before he even issued the ICO. Today he does. And the ICO is just gravy on top.

Do you have a link to the $100mm in VC funding that Dan has for EOS?

No that information is well-sourced rumor. But, more accurately, it's block.one that raised the money. Dan is the CTO, not the CEO, and has no discretion over how that capital will be spent. We all know that Dan can deliver working software. The real question people should be asking is who is Brendan Blumer and how is he likely to use this money? What we've seen so far at the EOS launch was that Blumer knows how to create a buzz.

plus the YEAR LONG crowdsale? wtf?

STEEM was never designed to be a smart contract blockchain

Dan literally said a year ago that Steem could run smart contracts and do everything that Ethereum does.

Steem is EOS little sister. EOS is being designed with both STEEM and Bitshares in mind. It's not just another project, it is the 3rd project after bitshares and steem created by @dan Larimer. People have confidence in EOS having seen what he has built before.

Steem is its own thing and is NO ONE's little sister. Stop thinking so small and stop drinking the kool-aid.

I've never had a kool-aid, how does it taste ?

It tastes like that ;)

I doubt that's an issue. Just because they would launch a platform with a better technology it doesn't mean they would be able to build a community.
Steem has already been running for a while and the community keeps growing. It's not an overnight thing.
Also, I do believe that this should more concern Ethereum holders rather than Steem users, because Ethereum is in direct competition with EOS.
Lastly, in my opinion the technology for Steem isn't that important. I haven't read about any limitations that Steem is facing from the technology side, but please correct me if I'm wrong, would like to learn more about that.

As far as we've come, it's really not been that long and if we hand over a competitive advantage....plus there's all the unforeseen developments that may put us further away over time, I think it's an unnecessary risk. What else are we doing with the massive dev fund?

Theoretically speaking it would be great if a exact copy of everything in Steemit could be recreated from a certain point in time within the boundaries of EOS.
I guess that would be the perfect situation for the people that have more to lose than for the new people in Steemit who may prefer a fresh start.
My opinion though is that if there is something to be protected, is not the position of Steemit in the market, but the people as a whole posting in Steemit (with people I mean the flow of information created by the users of Steemit).
Whether it is possible migrating to EOS is something that we have time to discuss, since we still have a year until EOS develops, even to buy tokens, and also, in 6 months we could have a bigger rule changer. So before using actual resources in possible futuristic situations, and being very positive to stay alert, I believe is better to hodl and see how the year develops.
Having said that, I don't see why someone knowledgeable couldn't prepare an approach for a possible migration.

BTW Ive liked your post @Benjojo, and the fact that I can see there are people trying to protect this environment.

Thank you for the comment. There certainly are accounts with more to lose than others. That is one of the reasons I'm doing what I can to give as many as possible an understanding of how encompassing the value within steem can be, regardless of the present distribution of steem and the few foibles. The steemchain and our building of connections across it is just something else. Marvellous. I'm just glad to raise a flag and begin the discussion.

Would love to follow u .....I m new here plz upvote me ....I will be thankfull to u ...plz plz

Please don't beg. it's embarrassing

hahahahaha.........allow him to beg

This is a bad strategy on Steemit. Good luck though.

Totally agree with you @eeks. Too much incertitudes to think about a link enter steemit and EOS at the moment.

I was looking into buying some EOS tokens however the ICO crowdsale was kind of different....Makes me wonder when time is right to buy in. Have read some mixed messages...Ethereum blockchain is only used for funding and EOS will have it's own blockchain...Tokens therefore may have a limited use...

You will be able to convert EOS Eth tokens to EOS EOS tokens.

Thanks...didn't know.

Good to know in so simple words

There are no promises made, I agree.

Plz upvote me ...such a good reputation u have

PLz contribute to the conversation... don't beg.

What about "Steemians" ??? I thought we were "Steemers" lets come to a consensus

LOL. It was "steemians" when I joined a year ago. It's ye new generation saying "steemers" grrr ;) lol

hmm, right answer \ EOS have their own business.

I disagree with you.

It's always good to support your points with full arguments. Your response begs the question "why." Why?

STEEM is not the same as shares in Steemit, Inc.

Steemit, Inc is a for-profit organization which is obligated to serve its shareholders (of which I am not one). Anything Steemit, Inc does is for its benefit and legally speaking, they cannot promise in any legally binding way to do anything for STEEM or risk Steem being interpreted as a security.

I think I understand what you mean. Can steemit.inc use the Steem in the Steemit account to invest in EOS? Could they then choose to sharedrop EOS on Steemit accounts or use the EOS to fund a migration?

It might make steem only stronger, for example if steem was to move to Eos, then steem could use eos for video hosting etc.

Its the best discussion I have ever came across, informative and productive.

Honestly there are so many of these startups i hardly feel any of them should be taken seriously unless they at least have some kind of pre alpha prototype. I feel steemit should focus on steemit and just be persistent about improving the platform. Do this and listen to the community, then steemit can only win.

I think it is important to understand that two of the best platforms in crypto, steem and bitshares were built with part of the same software tool set and code-base as EOS will be. steem and bitshares are powerful pieces of evidence of the ability to deliver.

Good point, to be fair I should probably investigate the EOS project more thoroughly before dismissing it as just another crowdsale.

Never dismiss anything dan is up to ;)

I watched this just now...

...

Mind blown

Nice one!!

There are many other coins that can be used as a counter-Steemit or Steemit competitor. You can't stop them, only the good community and awareness can stop the competitors in this category of crypto. After all. Steemit is just getting started. Many Steemit apps incoming it will be great.

There is a great deal to be optimistic about, absolutely. I agree, competition is healthy and galvanising. If EOS and apps within it gain too great a competitive advantage, that could be a problem. As long as we think it through, i'm confident the right course of action will be taken. :)

Might Steemit survive as it is first to market ... I know this is not always the case, publicity is probably required and although I don't like all the advertising on FB, it would be one way to Steemit success

After reading the article on Coindesk accusing Dan of running a ponzi scheme, I think this sounds like a really bad idea.

These are two separate project, it could go whichever way it should and just let the best product in the market win. If people can build better social media platform on EOS, so be it. People will go there.

But we have the first mover advantage, we need to build this community fast and make it hard for new competitors to even think about beating us.

Seeing projects like eSteem & Steepshot makes me believe that it's getting easy to reach mainstream market now.

The lack of facts in that article speak for themselves. You can't base decisions on the misrepresentations of others. Looking at the technology framework that steemit and steem operate within is only sensible.....it would be like a bitcoin miner refusing to upgrade their machine. There is no reason not to remain competitive....most people wouldn't even know a change had been made. There is every reason to remain competitive and preserve this community.

Steem and EOS would be an amzing tag team for all of us!

Thank you for the help on minnowsupport!

No worries at all! ;)
