Steemit Needs: IDEA + DISCUSSION: - Implement both a DV (DownVote) button AND a flagsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #steemit9 years ago (edited)

With all the uproar + discussion about flagging lately, along with the recently created @asshole account here funded by another account which is now systematically flagging hundreds of posts a day for WHAT REASON EXACTLY? -- I have been thinking more about this.

  • I'd drafted something awhile back on this issue not being an online expert or IT guy and said this to @jamesc in the @timcliff post titled about flagging where I came up with this idea. I would love input from head people like @ned, @dan / @dantheman @donkeypong -- and other developers/leads/IT types etc.

Implement both a DV (DownVote) button AND a flag.

In that post I had said:

I have always felt there should be both -- the DV button and a flag option.

I can DV a post and it carries less overall harsh consequences and save the flags for the super bad stuff or reasons, one does not always = the other on here. But currently --- they do.

I am just a regular guy I say yet again. Onboarding regular users as such is the key to long term growth of this platform and community, I have also said to whaley type people & various Steemit Elders.

My hope today is to gather opinions from across the spectrum of the Steemit --- and talk about it.

What say YOU people???

Most Sincerely - Your Minnow Friend and Regular Guy -- Barry

Hi @barrydutton - there is a change to the way flags/downvotes are handled that should be applied to the live site soon (details here). This should help with the @asshole issue.

Also, a larger change to split downvotes and flags is being discussed, but it would be a more complicated change. If it does get implemented, it likely won't be for a while due to higher priority items. Here is a GitHub issue where it is being discussed though: https://github.com/steemit/steem/issues/500

Thanks Tim.

I had seen some of the posts/banter and discussion and wanted an updated / personal Point of Reference on it and also hopefully engage some of the Steemers.

I would separate it into at least 4 different buttons to leave no confusion.

TY for the input.

What would you call the buttons and why?

copy/paysta button: plagiarism
ad block button: spam
the fist button: abuse
the reward thief button: reward redistribution
debate button: I disagree with you.

ok, 5 buttons. I hadn't laid it all out. I think that covers it.
I'm not firm on the names. What do you think?

There would still be disagreement, but less confusion.

the mute button already exists

Some nice places to start for sure.

I love your standalone spam button -- the programming/coding built into each button could carry diff. weights and actions for diff. things!!!! Now that I think about it.

TY for your input today!!!

#ENGAGEMENT

...the recently created @asshole account...

Best. User. Name. Ever!

(Okay; I haven't been flagged; feel free to call me complacent...)

Again, back to my points about what this kind of strange behaviour and such related says to the public about the platform.

This account here was just started y-day -- and is flagging people along a similar pattern also it seems!

Maybe only one person is behind both.

That was my first thought too.

TY for coming to check this out. I appreciate it.

Great to see you so engaged ;)

Thanks a lot!

Oh.... my #StarWars meme is done, the latest in my series to honour @lordvader

@berniesanders is powering down and selling

This is a tough one for me because I am such a huge proponent of positive reinforcement. One of the things that I have always loved about steemit is that it seems far more positive than many other sites. I know there is some negativity. I am just saying in comparison to some of the hate filled things you find on the web, steemit is FAR better. I like the idea of community members pulling each other up. I guess I like the idea of voting for something if you like it and just skipping something if you don't. But I also think there needs to be a way to stop cyber bullying and things like that so some kind of flag is needed in order to protect people.

I am just waiting for the 2 guys that have stalked and harassed me since the summer of 2013 to show up that still badger me now.

I have a ton of proof and the lies and bullying here will start again, I have been waiting and I don't hide behind aliases or fake names, even though some do it for legit and Liberty/freedom based purposes.

TY for your comments.

I actually sent scripture based encouragement graphics out today to about 10 people before I logged in here.

I agree with the idea of having both. Separating a straight downvote from a flag and the flag being for more serious issues allows for the flag to carry more weight than the downvote.

Yes.

I was thinking more about this today even after something @hanshotfirst said on here about encouraging people and moving on if you don't like something and not being nasty.

I am now wondering if we need a DV button at all.

Which is funny if you think about it, bc that is currently what we have LOL -- no DV ability. In the purest sense.

I'm not real crazy about the idea of a downvote button but if the trade off is that flagging is used for real abuse then it gains some value.

Some people really do think that they need the ability to downvote if they don't like how much a post has earned. Personally, I think that is elitist but each to their own.
