Steemit.com GitHub Report Development Updates

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

This report provides a summary of what the Steemit dev team has been up to in the GitHub code repository. The changes that are in this report are things that are being discussed and considered, as well as being worked on. There is no guarantee that any of these will actually be implemented and put up on to the site. It does give you a good idea of what they are up to though :)

Image Uploads

It looks like we might have image uploads directly into Steemit.com soon!

GitHub issue 396 adds the ability for users to upload images directly into the posting interface, instead of having to use a third-party image hosting site. The upload should be very user-friendly as well. Simply copy the image into the clipboard and "paste" it into the editor to upload it!

While there is no guarantee that it will make it up onto the live site, a pull-request has already been submitted - so it is fairly likely that we will see it live on the site soon.

Do not show how many downvotes a post has received

With the current implementation of "flags" and "downvotes" being combined into the same function, users receiving "downvotes" for non-abusive reasons (such as disagreement on rewards) has been causing a lot of controversy. Part of the reason is because the interface shows the post as 'flagged' whenever it receives a downvote, which makes the post seem 'bad' compared to non-flagged posts, even if the poster did nothing 'wrong'.

GitHub pull request 1039 will update the UI to no longer show how many downvotes a post/comment has received. Downvoted posts/comments will no longer stand out compared to 'regular' (non-downvoted) posts/comments unless they become hidden due to a negative voting score.

GitHub issue 1050 will update the post page to show the authors userpic below the post title, as shown below.

Miscellaneous Bugfixes

A lot of the issues that are being worked on right now are bugfixes. I did decide to exclude them, since I think most users are just interested in seeing the enhancements.

This concludes the list of relevant issues that I found to report on. There is a lot of design work going on behind the scenes related to new features, but they haven't been added to GitHub yet. Once I see them create issues for things that are being discussed/planned, I will add them to the report.

Also, since apparently there has been some confusion based on the nature of my posts, I wanted to clarify - I do not work for Steemit. I am just a member of the community who is reviewing the activity and posting what I see.

2nd time I see

# 396.

That's the one good one.
Resteemed.

Yeah, they did a lot of work on it several months ago but I think they ran into an issue when it was being tested on the 'test site'. Since a pull-request has been submitted for it now, I think the issue they ran into has been resolved.

That's good news. Hope it will make it easier to post but I suspect will have to relearn different way of doing post. I use HTML a lot now.

I see hiding how many flags a post has received as a lost. Losing valuable information isn't a plus. This is my opinion. I know the information will still be available else where but how information is displayed is also part of what make valuable information.

I see your point. Here are the notes from the pull request:

The main argument against this change will be that users can no longer easily identify posts that have been flagged for abusive reasons. While this is true, the current implementation of the flag/downvote at a blockchain level does not provide a good means to do this without also singling out content that has been downvoted for non-abusive reasons. Users that are interested in fighting abuse can use other interfaces (such as steemd or the steemit.chat abuse channel) for this purpose, while regular users will just be presented with the "vote list" (showing the top 20 upvotes/downvotes) and pending post reward.

This post has been ranked within the top 10 most undervalued posts in the first half of Jan 24. We estimate that this post is undervalued by $24.18 as compared to a scenario in which every voter had an equal say.

See the full rankings and details in The Daily Tribune: Jan 24 - Part I. You can also read about some of our methodology, data analysis and technical details in our initial post.

Image Uploads #396, will be a welcomed addition.

After which, support for video links, slideshare presentations, etc. would be nice as well! (hint, hint dev guys)

Do you know what is the follow-up of the reminder of the five-tag issue with my posts (see here for a quick reminder of the link)? Now, it is not only the post number 2, but also the post number 4 that are missing.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I do not know much what to think about hiding the flags. Why not just implementing a down-vote function?

The issue with missing posts has been identified as an issue with the blockchain API. The devs are looking into it, but there is no fix yet. It does not appear to be related to using 5 tags though. You can track the issue here:
https://github.com/steemit/steemit.com/issues/986

A separate flag and downvote opinion is being discussed as well, but it would require a much larger change. If it were to be implemented, it would not be for quite some time, due to higher priority things.

I see. Thanks a lot for both answers!
