Should You Promote Your Posts in Discord Groups?

A week ago, I initiated a research, sourcing information from whoever who was kind enough to give comments. I promoted my post in over 25 different Steemit discord and Facebook groups. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only were people willing to comment on where they found my link, which made it easier to identify which of the groups were active, they were willing to give their thoughts on how to promote one's post well.

So without further ado, let's get into what the results were:

So, Should You?

The short answer to that is, yes. You should, promoting your post on as many discord groups as possible is recommended. One of the groups, in fact, the only group that my post gained visibility was in the @steem-engine discord group. This is attributed to them requiring you to engage two other posts before posting your own post. This works really well as more than half the comments given were from the @steem-engine. In addition, if you have an attractive title to your post, I'm pretty sure most will engage your post especially since it is a requirement to begin with.

From this, it can be deduced that engagement helps in promoting one's post to others. @akiripromise sums it up quite nicely. The statement given was that most people treat it as a dumping ground of posts. Thus, if you are producing posts that are not good but hoping that someone would click on your post to read it. Discord groups unfortunately is not for you. Dumping posts in each group's post promotion channel is also rather counterproductive. It took me about 10 minutes to post on each of these groups. If I were to change my strategy and spent some time engaging two other people's posts on any of the discord channels, I'm sure the results will be more promising as compared to just pasting posts in the post promotion channels.

What Does This Mean?

@goldendawne pointed out the pasting links without engaging others is an annoyance to some members. @gduran concurs with this, stating that the results for such an approach is practically zero. This means that if you truly want to gain a wide dedicated audience, engaging other members is the key.

While this may seem like common knowledge, this has become an often neglected point on Steemit. Most would see Steemit as merely just posting and upvoting. However, Steemit is after all a social media platform and thus engaging others and promoting one's post to others does help.

Furthermore, if we were to see our accounts on Steemit as a business and our posts as our product, it would be a great idea to sell our product so that we can get paid in upvotes. Thus, why not try engaging, supporting and helping others in other discord groups? I am sure that it won't be long before you would have gathered quite a following.

Some Interesting Findings

I have always assumed that promoting Steemit posts on Facebook would be more effective. This is because Facebook notifies you whenever something new is posted. As such, I thought that if I posted a new post in a Steemit group on Facebook, more people would engage my post as they would have received a notification. However, out of the many groups that I promoted my post on, only one responded.

All in all, promoting your posts in different Facebook or Discord groups is a great way to gain visibility. However, engaging and being a part of those groups are more important. Others will notice who you are first and foremost before your post. While it is possible for others to discover your great content without you even engaging them, your great posts are not as visible as your friendly and awesome personality. Furthermore, your post could be lost in a sea of thousands of other posts, but if you engage others on a personal level, they will follow you and be your loyal audience.

I hope this helps, I know this is something that most of us already know, but backed with real responses from other Steemians, I hope this helps those who are new to Steemit! Do let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

@alvinauh, somehow agree with your statement, and it is not easy to survive without any engagement even if you have a quality post. Too many Steemian tend to look at the faster way to make quick buck, but only the good one will stay longer.

I found that the rules of some Discord channels about having to upvote and comment on other articles, is really bringing value. The @qurator channel requires you to read one, @Asapers two. It’s a way gor me to discover new content. Because of that rule, I come across content I would probably have missed otherwise.

I couldn’t find a Discord link for @steem-engine. Could you send me one, please?

Nevermind. I found it in the comments section here ;0)

So sorry I got back to you so late. I saw you on steemengine, hope you are having a blast there!

I didn’t get in yet. I had almost filled in the (extensive) application form when lost my WiFi connection. When it connected again, the page refreshed and everything was gone >:0(
I decided to fill it in another time...

I think post promotion is good in many ways. However some servers have such a large amount of people feeds get flooded.

But I think without post promotion it can be hard to keep track of peoples posts

that's right.. I think groups with less people generally do better, in my opinion

Hello @alvinauh I am in full agreement with your analysis of engagement of fellow steemians even if we place a link on facebook or discord. As steemit is a social platform and therefore people like to be heard and responded via perhaps engagement and communication.
In the steemit psot case, through the comment section of the post. However, to be really helpful to newbie like me, sharing of more discord server like @steem-engine would be much appreciated by all newbies.
Just my suggesttion to help more newbie

That's a great idea, should definitely do a post on that sometime. Of course, if you need any links, do DM me, would be happy to send some groups your way!

Thanks for the tips. Just overlook that in fact we can promote our post in Facebook group. Have to study it tomorrow!

No worries, there are about 6 to 7 of them that I know of. Though i find it ironic as steemit and facebook are both competitors in their own way.

To be honest, that's really helpful. Engaging with people on discord or on steemit simply by replying your audiences and leaving some constructive comments on someone's post really does help. Not just our self but helping the writer to improve is the best result for both writer and audiences could get.

But, in another way, just blind posting without engagement is just like pouring water into a sink with a large hole that always goes to waste. To me, discord is definitely a platform for all us to be more engaging!

Good topic Alvin. You always produce really good and quality content.

Thanks and i love your analogy of the sink. I always saw it as blindly shooting at the sky hoping to hit a bird..haha.. Appreciate you stopping by!

This was a really good post. I have noticed a lot of the same things that you have written about. I used to put my new posts into as many Discord post-promotion channels as I could. I have since stopped doing that and I only focus on the one or two servers that encourage you to interact with others when you promote your posts. It hasn't made a huge difference yet, but it has definitely saved me time that was wasted posting in every server I could find.

Thanks again for this post!

No problem, ultimately people come to your post because of you and not because well, you placed in a discord group. Thanks for stopping by

Sir, one of my friends told me that steemit.com can ban you if you post your steemit.com on facebook too much. Is there any reality?

There are hundreds of us from teammalaysia who posted on Facebook and never heard of anyone getting banned from Steemit

Don't think that's even true. I think it would be more profitable for facebook to ban you instead, although i have not found any truth in that so far
