You need to understand how Steem works. Steem is like a company, owned by stake holders. Every day, there is a fixed amount of STEEM token be created, to be distributed to authors and curators. The creation of new tokens effectively dilutes holdings of all stake holders, it's a wealth redistribution. The stake holders decide how to distribute that amount of tokens, by voting. Before payout, every vote is a proposal. Someone proposed that you can have higher pay doesn't mean that amount is a donation to you, because the one didn't take out money from her/his own pocket, instead, she/he was trying to take money from the public pool. Same logic, one down voting you doesn't mean stealing from you. The beggar's donation cup analogy is not the same case. When you get more form the public pool, it means others will get less, and vice versa. Every stake holder has a say about the distribution of the public pool, by voting. Bigger stake holders have more weight in the decision making process, it's capitalism.
