Can you teach an old Steem-dog new tricks? How to give your curation rewards a boost today!

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

As my followers will know, I run a weekly curation league and give out a little Steem to the weeks' best efforts, as far as financial return goes.

Over the past few months the curation game has changed, not as far as a new Fork where 'rules' will be adjusted, but in relation to what we have available as content to vote on.

I see many dolphins and orcas seemingly aiming for rewards, but not hitting any where close to the returns I think is possible.

More on this below...

This week my curation league was was won by @miniature-tiger, not by a nose, but by a distance! I gave him a virtual pat on the back, and his well deserved 5 Steem reward.

He is currently sitting on weekly rewards of 12.7 Steem Power and has around 1,400 Steem vested.

So in the past 7 days, he has gained about 9 Steem Power for every 1000 Steem Power owned.

If we add that 12.7 on to his total Steem Power of 1400, use the same percentage of rewards gain each week, and continue compounding this for the next year...

In just 52 weeks his account would be at 2218.779 Steem Power.

This is about a 58% increase - Fifty-eight percent in 1 year!

That is a fantastic return on investment by an standards, and for supporting content on Steem Blockchain with the click of a mouse - ace!

Fifty-eight percent is stand-out, but if you are personally only looking at 5-10% when you do the maths, you ain't doing it right...

So, what's the secret?

The secret is there is no secret, it's all right in front of you!

In the past six months or so, there has been an exponential increase in applications using the Steem Blockchain.

dTube, busy.org, Steepshot, and utopian-io to name but a few. These applications have more than the Steem Blockchain in common though, they all reward content creators using their application to submit 'proof of brain' to the Blockchain. (You could also include 'sndbox' and 'ocd' in this list although they are accounts and not a separate application - see @acidyo's replies below for more information)

And so, if you haven't guessed already, @miniature-tiger's focus this past week, was based around these applications, and in particular, utopian-io.

A quick scan through his wallet and the 'Curation Rewards' section, you can easily spot the best rewards coming from the utopian-io submissions.

The key here is that the utopian-io votes are on a schedule. You don't have to time your vote perfectly or within the first 15-30 minutes - If the submission is approved (and there will be a comment in the post saying so), you just need to be there before the @utopian-io vote.

A closer look at the utopian-io votes shows that each submission category comes with it's own vote 'weight'. Contributions promoting Steem/Steemit, and 'Analysis' posts normally receive a bigger vote than 'Suggestions', or 'Bug reports'.

However, that's not to say you cant make a good return on a lower vote. Many of the contributors are newer Steemit accounts and don't have a huge following - It is easily possible to find a contribution sitting at 20-50 cents, that is going to receive a $10 vote from utopian-io.

Everyone's a winner?

For the most part, yes. As i said, many of the accounts submitting content to utopian-io, and indeed dTube, are quiet new. In fact, the average reputation of a utopian-io contributor last week was 55.

Also, this is a game anyone can play. If you have 1000, 5000, 50,000, or 500,000 Steem Power, a good return is waiting as long as you adjust your vote weight accordingly.

At 1000 Steem Power, 50-100% vote might be required. At 100,000 Steem Power, a fraction of this percentage will be enough.

So if your account is big or small, you can boost your curation rewards and support new content at the same time. Good eh!?

Of course not everyone is seeking financial rewards here, but if you do want a little boost for the new year, this is one of the easiest ways to do it.

I'll end by saying that the utopian-io voting round will start in about 8 and a half hours after the time this blog was submitted and that I have an approved contribution to the 'Analysis' category that should receive around a $50 vote later. Ha!

Any questions just ask. I'm here eating chocolate and drinking a beer.

Cheers!

Does he have a trail that follows his votes other than the utopian account?

My curation rewards are often higher because of the voting trail that follows, except on the @ocd nominations cause they are over 1 day old and streemian doesn't follow on those. ^^

I don't think he has a trail himself, or follows one. The votes will be manual.

The good thing is there is no rush at 15-30 minutes on many of these posts as they are from accounts with only a few hundred followers.

For your SP, you are going to have to chop your vote weight down pretty low and spend a lot of time clicking, but it'll work i'm sure!

Cheers man :D

Yeah, some time in the future I will try to go for max curation rewards again. :D

For now I invite anyone to front-run me and @anomadsoul's votes on @ocd nominations for increased curation rewards. ;)

Definitely a good option with you guys delaying your votes on @ocd posts. Hopefully someone will pick-up on this!

I'll add it to the post.

Thank you!

I don't have a trail of voters. I mainly looked out projects where you know there is a whale vote coming down the track to boost your curation rewards.

OCD is a good example of this, and one that I also use.

There is also a benefit from still being pretty small, so any whale votes are proportionally larger compared to my upvotes. I think my approach reduces as it scales but it's a good one for minnows and dolphins.

I think my approach reduces as it scales but it's a good one for minnows and dolphins.

Yeah pretty sure of this too, but of course as a whale you can scale your vote down to 1% (or less on some UI's) to counter this.

This is surely a useful information to maximize our curation value from master curator. Thank you.

You are welcome!

Ha Asher! Giving away all my secrets!

It's true though, it's there in plain sight. Utopian is currently a very good source of curation rewards, with the added benefits that:

  • I think it's a good project for steem and one I'm happy to support - some percentage of your upvotes (25%) goes to utopian itself.
  • Posts are moderated so you know they are of a certain level of quality (this isn't perfect yet, but the project is new, off to a really good start, and developing fast).
  • You have a pretty good idea how much the following utopian-io whale vote is going to be so you can plan your own upvote accordingly.

A couple of tips for anyone looking into this approach:

  • Join utopian and upvote on their site. They only show articles once they have been approved by moderators so you can be sure they will receive the utopian upvote (of course, other users may jump in first before mods have made their ruling, but this isn't happening too much at the moment)
  • On the utopian site it's organised by category. It's based on the busy.org front-end so you can hover over the thumb and see the size of previous utopian upvotes for that category. Development and Analysis posts tend to get a good upvote.
  • The lower the payout on the post at the moment you upvote it, the better for your curation rewards.

I also look at projects like OCD, which again have the benefit of a following whale vote combined with posts that are chosen for their quality. Same principles apply.

I haven't looked at DTube yet for curation rewards yet - been a bit slow on that one!

Thanks for the detailed response, I've bumped you up the blog for visibility as there is lots of good info here!

Not much more to add, and I have a headache presumably from all the chocolate last night, cheers!

Lots of good info, need to process... This info is bigger than my brain right now haha

haha :D

Ok, just checked your wallet. You will need a little more SP to reach 500, and activate the vote slider....

Better? Good!

So what you need to do for this little curation trick boost is have a look through #utopian-io (or #dtube) for content that has not received a vote from @utopian-io or @dtube yet. Should be easy to spot the stuff that has (it'll be at $20-$400).

You will need to put a size-able vote % down as you have 500 SP. I suggest trying 50% votes to start. Remind me in 7 days and we'll check your rewards :)

Good luck!

How did you...did you delegate SP? I have a slider now XD

Yes I bumped you up to over 500 SP

When you reach 500 SP in your account i'll re-assess and perhaps help someone else who is in the 400 range. Enjoy!

Thank you so much, it's very kind of you.

You got a 8.33% upvote from @postpromoter courtesy of @abh12345!

I'm here eating chocolate minus the beer.

It's way past my bedtime and I think I have to read this again tomorrow to understand all the math :)
So far I have successfully ignored all the utopian stuff because I thought it was something only relevant for developers... so you're saying I should care more? :)

And if I wanted to upvote utopian posts as you suggest - will I find them under the tag "utopian"?

I always post directly on Steemit.com - it sounds like I'm leaving money on the table after reading your post. I should publish videos through dtube, images with steepshot and text through busy.org - correct? Why, because they give auto upvotes as a reward for using them? Always or only when using special tags?

I tested dtube today but no magic big upvote yet :) maybe it's still coming.

Ok I will return to this tomorrow :)

#utopian-io is the tag to curate, I should have mentioned that I guess!

I should publish videos through dtube, images with steepshot and text through busy.org - correct? Why, because they give auto upvotes as a reward for using them?

Correct, use #dtube, #busy.org, Abby I presume #steepshot.

The maths is not essential, you got it 😁

If you are posting on busy.org then use the busy tag to get the upvote from the site team (I think it happens a maximum of two times a day). The size of the upvote depends on the weight of your followers.

Hitting the 15-30 minutes seems to be the sweet spot, I was always so eager to upvote my favourite creators it was often minutes after they posts - it's still a struggle to not do that and go back later instead - but the curation rewards as you say are far greater when you hold out a little.

Yes for sure, open a few tabs up - still doesn't mean I remember at times though!

#sndbox is an easy one to follow as well. Just make sure the person posting in that community is an a actual sndbox member and then check to see if sndbox has upvoted yet, if not you usually get really good curation rewards (at least a few months ago).

Yes you are right, I'll update my blog to include them. Cheers!

Hi @abh12345, Thanks for doing this detailed post. I was actually looking for it.
Question: Where can I find the complete list of categories that these upvotes cover and also the rules to submit a post? If there is any guide on this topic available, please share.

Thank You. Shared.

Steem On!

Certainly.

You can find the categories and the associated rules when you click 'Contribution' on the http://utopian.io site: https://utopian.io/write

If you check the #utopian-io tag and check trending/hot, you will likely find contributions that have received a vote and be able to gauge the level of quality required.

Good luck!

I'll do as you guided and will get back to you on it. Many thanks @abh12345. It's pleasure having you around. Good day.

Can I have some beer? :)
Thanks for sharing this excellent method that is just hiding in plain sight.

My pleasure, and of course - It's been a few years since I've drunk a 12 pack in one evening!

What if I told you I had a similar day minus the beer? :)

haha, then i would suggest 10 lunges and a set of squats :D

That would be tomorrow morning...already 23.26 here now :)

Awesome, so you let us know one of the secrets.

I personally have gained some good curation when rewarded some of the utopian .io tag related posts. But I think it all depends on the approval from utopian.io. Am I right?

Thanks again for sharing such useful information.

no problem :)

Yes approval is required for the nice up-vote. If you read the comments of the post you can see if there has been approval.

Thanks for your comments!
