Why Communities Local Support is Important for STEEM to Thrive

in #steemfest4 years ago

Steemfest is over... hype is dwindling

And I actually started writing about my take during my time attending Steemfest and was watching what Steemit Inc and the project leaders have to share.

I clearly remembered and understood when @roadscape mentioned about keeping the Steem blockchain fun and keep coming back.

But half of the time it is still purely under a very content eccentric idea they are working on.

And I am not bashing his hive communities, I think it is a BRILLIANT idea... and it is the beginning stage of what #teammalaysia is manually doing since 2 years prior.

And why @fitinfun mentioned about the needs of the minnows support (from a survivor's point of view) is equally important.

No doubt about it the Steem blockchain and this growing (stronger) community have finally set aside some of the project / tools deliverance expectations for Steemians (and community leaders to use)

But it doesn't (yet) solve the real-world case scenarios that Steem could potentially deliver

Of course, this requires the joint effort of EVERYONE, not just project leaders as suppliers and content creators as consumer.

I suppose the real reason is probably we are too used to gamify-ing everything and are chained under the marketing-consumerism; we forgot that we can all be contributors, team players, instead of clients or users .

The interesting part was when I was talking to not only @steemit inc but also SF attendees, they were surprised that internal trading happened in Malaysia .

And today, let me give you another classic real time reason why this is needed, with the support of a local community

DSESnews20191119.png

by the way, this just happened two hours ago as I am typing this out
(it's my lunch break now - yes. I have a day job)

This is Marta, she's @jpphotography's good friend.

23 days ago, before we set foot to attend Steemfest, the Daily Bread Food Bank had guests all the way from abroad and Julian had a wonderful account of his experience there (please click on the link to read his post)

and 23 days later, while Julian and Travelfeed team are still in Thailand, Marta had a problem encountered while she's in the Pangkor Islands of the State of Perak.

It's a nice place, you guys should check it out. I haven't been back there for years though

  • Pangkor Island didn't have a Celcom (network provider) shop there

  • Her Revolut Card DID NOT WORK during attempt to top up.

(for some certain unforseen reasons why Celcom lost its market popularity there, and why Celcom rejected overseas cards - Shame on Celcom)

  • Marta is not a Steemian, but Julian is.
Because of the connection of local steem communities in Malaysia, Marta and I are now acquainted and friends.

  • Marta doesn't have a Steemit account, she never really get the idea of travel blogging even though Julian has mentioned to her about @travelfeed

  • But because through these connections, Marta now has her inconvenient situation of resolved and able to stay connected with her family and the world.

And because of that, we most likely will be expecting a traveler who will most likely onboard into this ecosystem because of the real needs met

Imagine:

If Steem blockchain did not exist, and if it did but local communities support chain were never formed, this real need case scenario will never be able to work either.

Even if @dmitrydao mentione that

Steem is still too young for this...

Just like what @buttcoins mentioned before with his testimony of loving steem (and its community)...

This yet still (not so) young blockchain that has lasted for 4 years is still missing real life applications.

Imagine if there are local start-ups / businesses / investors (in steem) are available in the reach of Steemians who are travelling there:

  • Getting (local) bills paid
  • Getting groceries from certain places
  • Maybe enjoy certain rebated meals that is available from the recommendations on Waivio platform (like @grampo mentioned)

Without the worry of no buffer plan B when their fiat monetary services do not work....

(like what @detlev was trying to discuss about but was hindered with his jetlags)

This, to me, is the gamify-fun experience that any Steemian could possibly benefit from

(be it individual or a business sector)

This, is what I have been trying to share and spark some conversations here in this account for months...

And eveytime I see this sort of real case real need scenarios, I am more convinced that unlike other crypto, STEEM has a community forming around it; and for those who has no idea how to market it to their friends and family , maybe this could be a great testimony / example that you can tell a friend about steem (borrowed from @buttcoins)

This isn't really just about business and profits anymore; because this has the potential to bring people closer.

Maybe... this is what it was supposed to achieve?

ps: Sorry if I have "spam tagged" you guys that I know from Steemfest... haha... I truly hope that this real case scenario will spark even more conversations and creativity and new tools created even that could catapult Steem to a much stronger reason to stay for the long run.

(I am just a "getting-fatter" minnow, I can't do anything all by myself... )

Until then

A technology can come and go; but when a lifestyle is applied to it, it becomes a new revolution.

Sort:

The beauty of Steem is that you can use one account across multiple applications and you remain in control of your profile, connections, posted content and earned rewards. And all the social capital and reputation you earned belongs to you. For example, here is your Steem domain expertise - https://www.waivio.com/@dses/expertise

Exactly. And cools on that I am going to chek on my link later haha.

Now, we need to move beyond social reputation. Steem's first phase is completing, and we need a more areal view to see the potential of the whole echosystem.

(like what you mentioned about engaging with restaurants and get them onboard)

@helpie is a Community Witness.

Thank you! That looks like a really nice slice of cake!

I quite agree that developing local communities through Steem would be of great benefit.

Unfortunately in most parts of the world (for example the UK) the numbers of Steemians still active are so low it is hard to get local activities going.

Are you still growing the @dses project?

Don't worry about that, many countries are still quite slow to do so (despite Malaysia already started this idea 2 years prior haha)

I just heard from 2 of the SF attendees that internal trading happened during the end of Steemfest because some needed just enough cash to get to the airport and didn't want to waste the ATM fee, and another Steemian there was open to absorb STEEM at current exchange rate vs Baht

This happened locally and it was very convenient when emergencies / inconveniences like this happens, and the ability to directly exchange with STEEM to fiat on local land becomes as seamless and fee free as STEEM transfer.

This kind of convenience idea can spread like wildfire if one is open to share the experience; just like what buttcoins did.

share to a friend about STEEM

As long as you never give up the idea that this is possible.

Be of good cheer!

Good to hear of that.

yeah.
And for DSES, yes it is still growing, still a little slow as I am juggling between work and family at the moment.

What does DSES need to grow?

So much; but getting business enterprise and start-ups on board (beyond content and social network) is crucial to make Steem a daily life reality.

Yes we need more community involvement and connections between Steemians. I hope that your friend can also see the other benefits of having a Steem account other than just travel blogging. There is DTube, and APPICS, and other dAPps too where she could earn some money. Or even Splinterlands.

yes, and Travelfeed is just the first step. Can't just give a full buffet to her haha. that can be overwhelming. 🤣

That being said, I am actually testing out splinterlands as we speak, purposefully by creating a new accoutn to see how easy it is.

DTube is a little buggy at first but the integration for YouTube is great (she's not a vlogger)

Bottemline is that I am really happy that there are just so many platforms available and cater for the right needs; the more important part is that there is a community exist behind the dapps that is available to keep it luring people returning to the community (even without the constant connection to the Internet)

And today's post sharing is exactly what it needs to make Steem blockchain closer to a complete ecosystem, wouldn't you agree?

Yes, I wish I would just edit and upload a video to DTube from my iPad Pro and have it be there. These days I have to upload it to YouTube first instead. It's not the ideal, but one day they'll get it right.

Yes, this is the fastest way to do at the moment. Oddly even 3speak has problems loading on certain browsers. These are the little kinks that still needs a lot of tweaking.

Steemit community is very important! :)

It is priceless when real people steps in and realise the community. 😉
