steemd.com is down for more than 14 hours now.
It is not the first time that it is down and I Get the: "Node is down for maintenance. We'll be back soon."
steemdb.com is not a sufficient replacement since it is not as exact and easy to operate without JS.
When steemd.com is down, steemdb.com is not just inaccurate, it is deceitful. The margin from the truth is just too big for a rounding error. It seemingly uses some cache and gives outdated results as output.
Time to replace this menace.
Whomever handles steemd.com's "node" get cash/steem for it, and in late 2017 there is no excuse for such a dysfunctional mess.
For all the witnesses starting fancy useless projects, time to fix this.
I can not check exact voting power and reputation without steemd, or someone enlighten me.
Same for true text of posts without the deformities of steemit text parser.
Same for replies with negative rewards by posters with negative reps.
Same for exact posting and voting times, and transactions.
Not able to check the vote bidding bots either.
It is so bad that there is still no replacement for this website, and steemit hides so much from its users thrugh its interface.
Is there any other JS free blockchain explorer or a way to browse the steem blockchain for myself in a humane (parsed) way?
Or is it not roadscape's fault at all? It may be that steemd as a software, is a perfect product, so roadscape deserves only accolades, but steemd's hosts are guilty?
Because as long as it works, it works perfectly, and my problem is that it ceases to work so often and for so long.
Using steemit without steemd, is like walking blind with your eyes covered.
Having worded this, it is simultaneously a praise for roadscape, and a condemnation for the developers of steemit's GUI and then another condemnation against the hosts of steemd.com website.

Now it is down for over 2.5 hours.
And another steemd thought:
Using steemit without steemd is like having a busy bank account without having internet access to it.
This is not a joke or humor, it is how bad steemit is, that it is like driving with your windscreen covered with black paper.
Why is steemit like this? Ask its GUI's developers. Who hired them? Ask ned, or dan.
Them developers may as well be current or past witnesses.
Wonder who they are so I will refrain from voting them for witnsses.
And why is steemd.com down? No reply.

The witnesses have zero control over this. The website is not even run by Steemit, Inc. It is a third-party website run by @roadscape. He is the only person that can address the issue.
Most likely it is currently down because he is applying the 19.2 upgrade. Regardless of the reason though, you would need to contact the developer/owner of the website if you want support.
If the witnesses have no control over this, they could still create an alternative which they controlled.

Good suggestion. I agree some redundancy would be good.
It was a proof to why it is a necessity, not a redundancy.
Having multiple instances of a tool (i.e. a block explorer) can be described as having "redundancy".
This is when semantics go wrong.
FYI, I checked a few hours ago, and roadscape is a witness, and a powerful one.
If you remember otherwise, it might be because he might not had been a witness the last time you checked.
He joined steemit 4 months before you did, and has much more SP and for some reason has a lower reputation than you have.
I was aware of that. Sorry if my reply caused confusion. What I was trying to say was that 'the witnesses' (every witness other than roadscape) could do nothing to fix the site. Roadscape was the only person who could, since it is his site.
I talked to roadscape about making the source code open source, so that others could run their own blockchain explorers. He is on board, but it may take him some time as he is quite busy.

Update #2: About 10 minutes ago it is back.
I also noticed that the voting power did not recharge during the downtime.
There is no excuse for such a downtime of such an important ingredient, and there is no excuse for this ingredient being so crucial to using Steemit.
Only a matter of time until the next downtime.
It happened before and it will probably happen again.
