Happy Day 120!
It SNOWED here today! I couldn't believe it. It was in the 80s yesterday!
It didn't stick but it was a little disheartening to see that this morning. It has been harder to get out and bird with baby getting so big. Just about one month to go! It's getting so close.
I'm feeling a little homesick lately and I came across this photograph I took on my March/April trip to visit family of a beautiful House Finch among the brambles.
Male House Finches have bright red heads and are common at feeders in much of North America. Similar species include the Purple Finch, and Cassin's Finch. Purple finche males have more red on their head and it extends down their back and more on their chests. Cassin's Finch males have a little fluffy red crest on their head and a lack of the brown stripes on the lower belly. You can check All About Birds for more information.

House Finches are found nearly everywhere in North America, except the very northernmost regions. If you are in a populated area they are the most common of the finches in their family. Still identification is tough. Learning the call notes is very helpful, and knowing the structural differences in bill shape is helpful also. Here is the eBird range map of House Finch. They literally seem to be everywhere.
That's a good point about the calls. I'll have to listen to those and get a feel for the differences.
