House Finches are found nearly everywhere in North America, except the very northernmost regions. If you are in a populated area they are the most common of the finches in their family. Still identification is tough. Learning the call notes is very helpful, and knowing the structural differences in bill shape is helpful also. Here is the eBird range map of House Finch. They literally seem to be everywhere.
That's a good point about the calls. I'll have to listen to those and get a feel for the differences.
