New Steem? Old Steem?

in #steem5 years ago

I have been out of the game for a little bit but @whatsup started a marketing drive with the idea of #newsteem replacing the old and while I understand and appreciate the sentiment, I disagree.

There is no New Steem.

That is how many blocks make up Steem and they run in order immutably back to the first Steem block and have gone forward from that point every 3 seconds. There is no New Steem and, there is no
Old Steem.

There is just Steem.

As said, I understand the marketing sentiment but what I would like to draw attention to is that while there is only one Steem, it is in a constant state of flux, it is continuously changing, and with every 3 second block, more data is added to it, more words, more ideas, more accounts, more votes, more opportunity.

Every 3 seconds, the Steem blockchain changes slightly under the power of thought, the laws of supply and demand and, the freedom for any individual to press a word forever into the foundation that is the Steem blockchain. There is no new Steem, it is Steem evolution.

Or revolution.

But this isn't a revolution of victors and the defeated, it is a revolution where the past shows a history and steps toward the present moment that will never be wiped away for as long witnesses keep processing blocks. The revolution is in the blockchain itself, a history of people working toward and away from each other, collaborating and undermining simultaneously to find a new path through into the next block, and every 3 seconds Steem evolves a little further.

Every 3 seconds is a new opportunity.

A new opportunity to add your voice, a new opportunity to change a mind, a new opportunity to grow. Grow an account, an experience, an education, a portfolio, a life. An opportunity to connect, cooperate, develop and influence the future. Every 3 seconds.

This isn't New. It the only way Steem can.

These 34.5 million blocks delivered 3 seconds apart contain billions of pieces of information and hundreds of millions of relationships between people, words shared, jokes shared, pain shared. The entire history of the community can be tracked in 3 second lots - every post, every comment, every vote.

And each interaction, each transaction adds to the story that is Steem and it is not a new story at all. It is a story of life as it has always been, people trying to create a world where they feel they can not only survive, but thrive - in a community of interpersonal connections. Hopes, dreams, wants and necessities pulled together to negotiate an experience through the complication that is human experience, a world filled with scarcity, greed, charity and love.

The evolution is planned.

Every agreement and argument builds the conversation toward the next 3 second block, the next account created, the next account abandoned. Every word adds to the mass that is and can inspire or turn away depending on who's eyes fall upon it. Every transaction takes us as a community a fraction closer to solutions that will spill out past the borders of the blockchain and affect the world in which we walk.

This is what decentralized governance and ownership demands, a community of people who will work toward solution, work toward a path driven by what they can offer to the market, and take from the market. Supply and demand reigns, it is a free market where undefined good and bad actors are constantly creating tensions and behaving in opposition in a power struggle that raises concern, finds answer - only to create more problems to be solved.

Bit by bit, 3 seconds at a time

We can change the entire world in 3 seconds. We just need enough information on each block to evolve the blockchain, develop experiences and provide a place for the many to build values of any kind they choose. Some may seek fortune, others fame, some may just look for a kind voice with which to spend a few words. Steem is what you make it for you, Steem is what I make it for me.

There is no old Steem and New Steem. There is past and there is future. There are the blocks that are irreversible, and there are all the blocks that are to come.

3 seconds at a time.

I invest my time on Steem.

You are free to do as you please.

The people who are not here are not interested in our math.
They don't care about 3 seconds and technical details.
And they often will not care about libertarian values.

I guess it is the same argument as... My body is different today as it was yesterday. Is it new?

It will remian the same and carry forward all the same issues of yesterday. Unless I change my behavior.

Keep doing what you are doing and you will keep getting what you are getting.

Keep doing what you are doing and you will keep getting what you are getting.

Have you ever seen an identical block? It has been changing for years here. Changing in a thousand different ways daily, including what might be a marketing campaign. It doesn't matter whether you or I think we know what is needed because, it is up to the community to do what is needed in a thousand different ways. That is the power of decentralization, and its flaw.

From a marketing perspective, doing the same thing is not productive, is how I interpreted that quote.

We might know it as the same steem blockchain, but the world around us probably thinks nothing ever changes around here. Same old garbage system. Which is true to some extent.

Anyway, embrace the movement, don't get left in oldsteem ;)

#newsteem

I don't think I have ever spent time in old steem, I spend my time thinking about future steem. Marketing new only works on those who knew old, so it is internally focused. Hopefully it will push people to think outside and to those who have never seen or heard of steem.

Yes that's true, but getting (some of) the existing base worked up in a movement can help with that too.

Yep I agree.

well as much as the idea could be seen as putting lipstick on a pig... I don't see the New Steem push as being internally focused. In fact if it was, it would likely be greeted with howls of laughter.

Communicating a message off the chain of a 'new and exciting' Steem will catch people's attention, more so those who have never heard of Steem and will be curious to look and see what is going on.

Now, if we could actually live up to the hype, we might grow.

The idea isn't internally focused but it requires pushing it outward, something that doesn't come easily to Steem it seems. It should always be pushed as being new and exciting as it is always evolving and the users can direct the various directions. That is pretty cool isn't it?

I don't disagree on that. Was talking about that on PYPT Thursday morning along the lines of it's great to want to promote "new Steem" but why am I seeing so many posts on Steem and not finding them on FB or Twitter or where ever...

A lot of people don't want to be found on Steem perhaps. When it comes to financial things, open isn't normal.

A blockchain is only as good as its users. Behavior should be changed when necessary. A blockchain is worthless if nobody cares about it and it could go every 3 seconds not caring about us. Both can exists . Behavioral change and code.

Both have to exist. The behavior changes with the code, the code changes with the behavior. Behavior also changes through interpersonal interaction, as does the code. I think the strength of Steem is that it is possible for the community to change the code in various ways. The code doesn't change itself - At least not yet ;D

I can see your point :P

The code doesn't change itself - At least not yet ;D

Frightening to think about! someday it easily could!

Frightening to think about! someday it easily could!

Bernie is writing the AI code now. ;D

But if we get more people who don't care onto here then we will surely get a better community. I mean all efforts to pander to idiots, retards and the like, because they will make this place worth something, as it is very worthless right now without all the idiots and retards alike who care about bigger, better things than "libertarian values" and how everything adds up.

Those people, that don't care, they have absolutely nothing of value to add. Basic math. Saying that we should pander to a complete zero as if they could add any value to the community is complete nonsense. Let's bend over backwards to make sure that those who don't care are interested in us.

I understand the idea you are transmitting in the post. Steem is continuously changing, with every block, and we also need to parse all blocks to understand its evolution, theoretically. There is no inflection point, after which everything will be different and completely separated from what was before. From a marketing standpoint, it seems like a good move, especially if newsteem is painted rosier than the old and not-so-regretted oldsteem.

Yep, from a marketing standpoint newsteem works, but it has to be remembered that it will work for some, but not others in the same way that McDonald's advertising or marketing an Audi won't attract all viewers.

True. Marketing always has a target audience. Or it should have if it's well done.

But how do you market Steem, which becomes a conglomerate of communities, some of them having nothing in common with each other, where steemit.com is not the center of the ecosystem, as many still expect?

Ah.. that is what decentralization means - communities have to market themselves for their particular target audience. It is the only way there can be sensitivity in the marketing message. A gaming app marketing approach is less likely to work for a wine connoisseur community.

Will individual communities be able to carry out the task of marketing themselves? Until now we haven't been very successful marketing Steem as a whole.

I do agree with this approach at the community level, by the way.

Steem as a whole should still be marketed to developers and investors.

WEll, this is how startups have been doing it for years. The problem on Steem is that they generally look to earn from the pool, not from creating compelling experiences that attract investment.

Maybe SPS will change the way some owners/developers report on this matter.

Doing a Mr Douglas on us this morning.....

356aam.jpg

lol

I have #noidea what Mr Douglas is a reference to.

You never watched the Green Acres show growing up back in the day with Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor?....he was a New York attorney, she was his wife a flamboyant socialite, he hated living in the city, his dream was to be a farmer so he bought a (super) run down house in a place called Hootersville, it was pure comedy gold from there. He'd get in these patriotic moments and start doing these long drawn out patriotic speeches, as the camera when pan out from him you'd see everyone else slowly taking off leaving him standing there without realizing everyone left, that's where I got doing a "Mr. Douglas" from.

nope, never heard of it. fair call though - and no one has to stay and read :)

It sounded so patriotic I almost wanted to salute...lol, it was a good read, logic always prevails.

Very pretty post <3 It makes me happy, thinking about those 3 seconds bouncing around, carrying all those blocks, and within them, all of our Steemit life and experiences, friendships and creativity, and everything else, too :)

I like the idea of the community story being collected silently below us. One day, all of these relationships will be visualized in a way that demonstrates just how a community works and hopefully, how a successful community develops.

In regards to this post, the comments and replies...whew!
I came,
I saw,
I read,
I grew,
My brain decided it needed more space.🤯
I like this civil discourse and exchange of ideas, because if we listen and consider each point of view, each of us leaves here wiser having seen the issues from a different angle and perhaps having glimpsed something
We hadn’t seen
We hadn’t heard
Or didn’t think about
I for one, leave here asking new questions,
I hadn’t thought of before.
The ecosystem is changing rapidly,
though some parts resist change,
They are like trees in the wind,
They will bend or they will be broken and swept away.

PS
AI is already here,
it’s just hiding.
😆🤣😂

Peace and good health be with you,
and your little girl too. 🙏

One thing I like about Steem is that for the most part, discourse is civil. there are some who do not understand the word civil of course.

I for one, leave here asking new questions,
I hadn’t thought of before.

I think this is a good result for any post anywhere :)

AI is already here,
it’s just hiding.

It wouldn't surprise me at all.

Thank you :)

Thank you, it is appreciated.

I like the way you disagree with your steemian.
It show the degree of wisdom we have in this blockchain.
I did not understand the old or new steem.
Just a marketing sting!
Your explanation as a whole put steem where it needs to be.
great blockchain
Keep on postin

The beauty of Steem is that disagreement is actually quite irrelevant as each is able to forge their own path and still add value independently to the Steem blockchain. Two projects can be in competition and still add value to the community, even to those who do not use or know about the projects at all. It is a massive organism and is growing daily.

Lol. I haven't seen zuul in ages.

They try to get the message across that earlier Steem was abused with ninja-mined stake. Now it's a much healthier ecosystem.

More outward facing content would help build visibility I think. It is difficult though because a lot of what earns isn't what outsiders may be interested in.

We need more powerful investors in niche communities then...

Yes absolutely and have been saying it for years. If in a niche isät is impossible to get consistent support unless there are staked voters willing to support the niche. An occasional OCD or curie vote might come, but that is not reliable support.

Or people maybe should write more broadly and insert occasional niche posts. This might work because their closest fans will be curious.

Yes they should. I have mentioned this a fair bit. Staying narrow will result in a narrow audience.

This is true about life in general... By the way, have you noticed the frontend of https://www.neoxian.city? with it's tag "neoxian"

I haven't had a chance to read it yet. I saw the post in LEO... so many things to catch up on.

My advice - never leave steem for a few days :D

Machine time or Steem time?

Reminder: We don't live in 2019. We live in block #34,467,817.

Ernst Junger wrote about the history of time, every civilization with the advance of the technique, the measurement of time was modified. I would not be surprised if at some point we talk about blocks after invention of Bitcoin or Steem as we do with anno Domini (AD) and before Christ (BC).

Maybe in every new era we need to come to a new social contract that involves lot of social conventions in order to create new paths for the progress of human kind civilization.

I enjoyed reading your beautiful words.

The idea of changing time units is pretty cool. I had a friend at uni who broke every activity into 30 minute lots for example, gym was 3 units (1.5hr). It helped him schedule better.

I do think that in order to change significantly, a lot of the conventions change alongside as the old models are no longer well fit to society. It happens slowly though, people live to hold onto tradition, even if they are no longer relevant or perhaps, harmful.
