Is there a Discount for Comments?

in #steem8 years ago

Posts can earn up to thousands of dollars. A successful post can make you feel like this:

Piles of Money

On the other hand, it seems like comments are rarely above a dollar, and even the outlier comments are under a hundred dollars. A successful comment can make you feel like this:

A Few Pennies

Is this because there is a discount for comments in the code, or is it just because people tend to vote less on the comments?

Sort:

Typically - and this is just one viewpoint - less effort is put into the comments.

Occasionally, you might come across an excellent comment that's had a lot of thought and effort put into it that really adds value to the conversation - and they'll be rewarded.

Though most of the time, the time & energy put into comments isn't the same as posts, hence lower value, hence lower rewards...

Check out this post's comments. They have reduced over time, some were over $1,000 a while back, but still there are many in this one post in the hundreds ... https://steemit.com/steem/@au1nethyb1/reducing-friction-for-critical-mass-adoption-of-steemit

It's simply because people vote less for comments, which does make sense since people also generally put less efforts into comments. The reward structure for comments might change soon though and the proposed change will give more rewards to comments, which should incentivise discussion and increase voting for comments.
