Reward curve doesn't really discourage self votingsteemCreated with Sketch.

What the curve does is that it makes it less profitable for low SP accounts and more profitable for high SP accounts to upvote themselves.

It doesn't really discourage anyone, it actually encourages users with high SP account to upvote themselves.

Users who want to upvote themselves are going to do it regardless of any curve. Sure some users may think it's not worth it for such low reward but on the other hand you will find people with lots of money that will find it very worth it, thanks to the curve.

This curve is such a bad way to deal with self voting as it assumes everyone with low SP account are self voters. It doesn't make the distinction between grandma's travel post or someone trying to abuse the system. It just reduces every post on the wrong side of the curve ( which is the large majority of post).

The only logical way to deal with this issue is to downvote self voted content. If there was a moderator category ( as in recent proposal) self voting would be dealt with swiftly.

Do you think self voting is big enough of a problem today that it warrants maximizing power of a few at the expense of the majority ?

I definitely don't. If self voting actually was a problem on this platform whales would already be all over it, curve or not.

Sort:

I really don't think that many are even upset by self-voting. It is using the guild's to self-vote your own work as payment for curation that seems to be the upset. Maybe I am wrong, will watch for the rest of the comments.

I really don't think that many are even upset by self-voting.

That's because it's a non issue. Self voting is a bit like trolling, if people were to do it repeatedly they would get blacklisted and downvoted. It would just be a natural response from the community.

And I agree guilds self voting their own content is a much bigger issue.

Self-voting seems to be using the stake you purchased. Again, I think we agree it isn't a large problem. It is the whale pod voting that I think people are concerned about.

I wonder to myself if it is self-correcting? I guess the value of steem is the only indication. If people stay and invest while watching this behavior, it isn't a problem. If they leave and choose not to invest. How will we know which issue is the problem?

For discussion only.

I guess the value of steem is the only indication

Sometimes I just wish the price would go to zero already so that people realize that ignoring the 99.8% is a bad idea.

How will we know which issue is the problem?

Common sense mostly.

Nothing wrong with voting with your own account on your own posts. That's silly :)

But can you show how this new curve would do this? Telling us is one thing, but can you show us so we see it too? Thanks!

I am not proposing to introduce a new curve. I want the curve to be removed completely as it does not serve its purpose and penalize the vast majority of users.

This curve is such a bad way to deal with self voting as it assumes everyone with low SP account are self voters.

Haha you assume some 'morally higher purpose' in all of this. The reality is Steem follows the KISS principle:

  • Distribute everything (80% +) to our self and friends.
  • If 80% is not enough... we should multiply our self designated power! How? OK let's make our power ^ 2

Keep it simple stupid - get all you can get ...and if it is not enough square the power you gave yourself...this should do it...

What the curve does is that it makes it less profitable for low SP accounts and more profitable for high SP accounts to upvote themselves.

Yes, sure, but the initial idea was that there's not so many whales and they could police each other .

I think self-voting is not that problematic in linear system because self-voters cannot reward more than their stakes. But in superlinear system, they sometimes, especially combined with collusive voting and follow-up voting bots, have more rewards than their stakes.

How do you know if someone has self voted? Are you saying users can give them self 1 vote after they post, on their on post?

If that is the case, then surely the easy solution would be to remove this feature.

Or by self voting, you mean something else? (Sorry i am new here) :O)

Self voting means voting for yourself and yes users can do that. It would be pointless to restrict self voting because users could create sockpuppet accounts and upvote themselves. The only way to stop this is to downvote it which reduces or nullify rewards, the community would police itself.

Thank you for your reply.

So how do people here know, when a post has been upvoted by its curator ?

Thank you.

You can see on every post who voted for it.

Great! Thank you Snowflake, i have bookmarked this site. The only question i now have, if you would be so kind, i see where someone has upvoted and at the end of the text, is a number in brackets.

EG: (28.8%) (41.5)

What do these numbers mean please.

I'm not sure exactly what you are refering to. A screenshot would be helpful.
If I had to guess I'd say 28.8 is the percentage weight ( you can chose how much weight your vote has) and 41.5 could be reputation score .

Hi Snowflake, i found out what the number in brackets means (the grey numbers) it is to do with STEAM POWER and how much Percentage of a VOTE is given. So you can see exactly what each member awarded your posts. As seen here on Steemd.com

https://steemd.com/@vintagebazaar

So in this case i see someone gave me 28.8% of their steampower vote.

100% being the maximum.

All the best.

I can see the reputation score next to the username, when hovering mouse over it actually says Reputation Score.

Congrats to @snowflake to 888 posts. Good luck out there! Swim Fast :)
