Until apps are self funded...

There is no doubt that we are fortunate enough having some top notch developers around. And that is a fact, no matter what some people say....(they probably need to rant for every little thing).

There is no doubt also that those developers have created some amazing apps. Not every app around, is really useful but some of them have a bright future.

But is this enough?

You know what I'd like to see?

A team of developers, or even a single dev, who have built an app - it won't matter if I like it / use it - and will fund this app with money out of their own pockets, and after everything's set to write their introductory post saying:

"Hello Steem community, after 6 or 8 or 12 months of hard work and development, we would like to introduce to you our application. It is useful for this and this and that and the best part is that you we don't want delegated funds from Steemit.Inc. In fact just because we believe our app is going to be the next big thing, we made sure to buy and vest 200K or 300K or 500K SP with money out of our own pockets"

How cool would that be? Isn't this the definition of decentralization?

And if these devs were also able to run a node...That's what I call a business plan....

There are apps around that are totally depended on Steemit's funds. What will happen the next time Steemit decide to pull away a few more delegations? I'll tell you what will happen. Less user activity.

Building an app on top of steem blockchain is like opening a store in the real world. Does anyone open a store for free? NO. At least that's the case here where I live...

If you don't invest in your own business, what makes you think that others will see what you see...How do you expect them to share your vision?

And let's be honest shall we? 200K steem is almost 40K $ which I think is a steal if you are about to start a businessl...You need more that that just to buy a small coffee shop....

I am one of those that don't blame @ned. In fact it's his stake, his company, and he may do whatever he wants with his funds. Period.

Don't we all do the same?

This is me...sharing my thoughts. Feel free to share yours in the comment section below.

PS. @imacryptorick it is more or less my answer on your last post but I decided to make a post about it ;)

Sort:

As you can see I cancelled my first upvote and changed it for a full one. Just because I totally agree with what you wrote above.
Absolutely true: No one can open a store for free!

Yet most of the apps around are up and running because of delegations. Either from Steemit or the community....

PS Thanks! :)

You are absolutely right. And as you say, now would be a good time to vest a decent chunk of stake (plus there's the added advantage that the vested stake might end up being worth more than the business itself in 5-10 year's time!!!)

Now THAT is a novel idea.

I can't fault @ned because, if I was in his shoes, I would do the same thing.......because I would have his thought process, situation and action.

There has to be some upside for developers to invest their time in something that could be spent making a living or living their lives. An altruistic beginning would be a great start and then make money when it is adopted and valuable to people.

Isn't it the right order...?

Huh? IRL nobody pays extra money to the government just because they believe they're the next big thing. The only justifiable reason to get SP for a business account stricly related to their own app is to get enough RC to do their thing. Sure, they invest more if they want, but they don't have to.

Imo noone started a legit business in the platform yet. I have solid ideas ideas, but guess what? I wouldn't have enough funds to meet my RC requirements.

Anyone willing to open a new business on the platform should get attention. Funding, delegations. Financially speaking, it is much more beneficial for SP holders to bond with app developers than the other way around.
