We don't need SMTs to win

in #steem5 years ago

Almost since the beginning of my little journey on this blockchain, I've been listening to people talk about how SMTs are going to change the world. Of course, in theory, that sounds fantastic, the idea that we would have thousands of projects that can come into this blockchain and build with a somewhat plug/play dynamic. But, is this the only way for
success to happen?

Our nemesis: If only

This is somewhat anectodal, but I'm sure plenty of people will be able to relate to this, because it seems to be a common thing among us sapiens. We tend to deflect, if you will, our lack of success to outside forces. In other words "If only (insert the reason), I would be (insert the goal)". To some extent this could be true, meaning that I'm fully aware we can't control everything, but it's also dishonest to act as if we control nothing.

Here's some things that I do know, or at least believe to know:

  • Go getters don't ask for permission
  • Successful people fail more than anyone else

But, what about SMTs? We need them!!

Ok, do we? I mean, sincerely ask yourself that question. Are we saying then that what @steemhunt is doing is not valid? Are we saying that Steem-engine is trash or that it should be ignored?

Ok, I'll challenge someone who is holding on to this idea that without SMTs we won't make it, to tell me an example of how they would implement SMTs to their own projects. In other words, tell me how the SMT you are going to build, is going to revolutionize the world.

If you are stuck, out of ideas, then I'm sorry to say: the problem is not the SMTs

STEEM is bigger

Than Dan Larimer, is bigger that the company Steemit Inc, and no matter how many times you've heard this before, you need to keep repeating this so that the newbies don't join this platform using their facebook goggles.

"Oh who owns STEEM?" <- that is a stupid question to ask!

I just finished listening to this video from Theycallmedan and found myself agreeing so hard, I'm hitting enter after every paragraph as I write this with too much excitement (might break the keyboard here).

People....

Get out there and make some noise... Don't get caught up on the bullshit!

Much love

SMTs are only useful if you are trying to monetize a centralized project. If you want to create something that is owned by the community, SMTs are quite pointless.

The Steem API is already strong enough to create that mythical "killer dapp". We just haven't got there yet.

Very well said. The technical challenges that blockchain teams face are so complex and unpredictable that no one should really be building anything in this space that relies on future software released by someone else. For example, one of the things we've learned is that, if your goal is to build a flourishing social app powered by a cryptocurrency, then if you are successful you will quickly be buried by the cost of operating your node. So while many think we have abandoned SMTs, the work we are doing on MIRA is actually critical to making sure that when SMTs are released, the blockchain and the developers using it will be able to support those apps. MIRA is critical to SMTs, period. Of course, delays suck, especially when people really want the features, but these are often the dilemmas we find ourselves in. Release a sub-par product that can't actually support web applications, but that speculators and pumper-dumpers like, or make the hard, un-sexy decisions that enable the release of software that will support functional apps. If no one else is doing what we're doing, that doesn't really worry me because no one else is doing what we're doing.

I think the complainers for the most part just want to complain Andrew. And as you know, that's not me. I think we have the potential to build something amazing here and I think it's up to all of us to slay the FUD and misinformation out there.

Yeah it's funny, I mean the only way this stuff is going to work is if we ALL add value. This idea that someone else is going to build some magical software and then you're all of sudden going to get rich, is a myth perpetuated by get-rich-quick schemers. EOS won't do that, Ethereum won't do that. General purpose protocols don't do ANYTHING for you, that's the whole point. When I see people on Steem going, "I'm fed up, I'm tired of waiting for Steemit, I'm going to build something on Steem myself," I don't get offended, I get excited! Yes! Steem-Engine! Yes! Keychain! Yes! The fact that we have so many great people doing all kinds of things for Steem is exactly what makes it so great. And despite what people say about the team I'm a part of, steemit.com is still by far the most used interface, so we deserve some credit there. We still provide most of the infrastructure used by other apps. We still release a crap ton of free open source software that a ton of other people use and build businesses on top of. And we still produce the most, and the best, code for the blockchain itself. So we're not the best at hyping ourselves up and selling pipe dreams. I can live with that :)

Please dont write any more comments like this. You are just going to attract negative attention and piss off a lot of people.
These kinds of comments about SMTs have been heard a million and one time, in a million and one occasion. At least have the decency not to sell the same vapid narrative for the 100th time.
Theres no one buying that anymore.

Stick to yes/no ... Regular steemit.blog posts... We are doing Mira ... There were bugs ..etc..

Making excuses after 2 years of SMT talk will only lead to pissing people off.
Steemit.inc fucked up, you guys suck (dan knew it, you know it.) so keep your head down, do regular progress reports and work on getting better...
And please cut this stupid crap. Youre just destroying Steemit.inc credibility even more. (Whats left of it). People actually follow what you comment.
Tc.

:') Whipe out the dog shit on Youtube and everywhere! We should make a team of people full-time responding to crypto videos :-)

✔ ... that is an interesting idea.

Agreed and while I hope that nice stakeholder with the hair and guitar build some things we care about, I'm not holding my breath.

It is beautiful to see the community stop crying his name and start building!!!!

ha ha ha man. me too. just watched his video and started sharing it with my friends that have yet to get on steem.

this place is going to change the world. seriously change everything!!

Dapps will have a much bigger impact than SMTs in my opinion!
Time will tell. To be honest I do care if dapps or SMTs will make steem go mainstream as long as it does!
Cheers,

I'm in agreement with this comment. I am only in crypto for the last two years due to steem alone. In the last six months I have been posting with the dapps that pay with upvotes and no longer use steemit to post at all.

The dapps are the game changer. I still have no idea what a smt is and people have tried to tell me at least ten times. But I know what an esteem or share2steem upvote looks like, and that's what I'm pushing on my social media promos now.

Cannot agree more. Guess my start would have been so much easier if all these dapps were around when I did start 14 months ago on Steem.
While it was a tough start, I never regret that I took the plunge. The only regret I have is not to have started sooner :)

I'm the same - I had earlier chances to join before I did. The idea of crypto kept me out and the learning curve has been a tremendous effort. But now steem pays for my life of poverty in SE Asia, so I have more reasons than most to work for success. I put almost all my other work on the back burner and it would be hard to get it going again.

I'm just about to try @tasteem. They seem to have a wonderful dapp and give great support for restaurant reviews :)

Will try that one out on Sunday!
First I do have to look into it!

It is great to read that steem is really changing the life of people!

I'm not the only one using the money, but I am in the vanguard for sure. Few people pay $85 usd a month for rent, but it gets me a nice place in Kuala Lumpur.

I do eat out at least once a week and tasteem looks like a good place to post. I hope you like it too.

The community can do things better than Steemit can. And we have. If they won't do it, we can.

Posted using Partiko Android

Except maybe building blockchains, releasing hardforks, producing free open source software like Condenser, Jussi, Hivemind, Tinman, etc. and of course running the nodes that most of your favorite apps are using for free :)

I never said Steemit is useless. The community has just been able to make some things happen that you guys haven't.

Posted using Partiko Android

I agree 100% :)

And you guys are getting better. More communication, and we can have discussions like this. Working together helps us all. But we have to keep each other accountable.

I've long been an SMT skeptic. I'd rather have Steem focus on one purpose that reaches mass adoption (like rewarding content, which is very well done through STEEM) than trying to keep up with all the other token-issuing blockchains that basically also have turing-complete smart contracts and by definition will have more capabilities.

I see how a lot of projects / Dapps would want to have their own reward systems or community tokens, but apparently that can be solved in different ways. For fundraising, though, own tokens would help (this would also help Steem), but it's questionable whether this kind of fundraising will actually work on a sustainable basis - seeing that 99+% of all token-funded projects have failed to deliver on their goals.

In any case, I agree that Steem is definitely more than a token platform, and I hope everyone on here keeps in mind that, in the end, it's the value for the users that counts. If we as community are able to maximize that for as many users as possible, there will be no doubt about the value of STEEM or whether anyone here deserves their rewards.

More tokens do not equal more value without adoption and people using them for creating an economy. We are still just building the foundation and technology will evolve in due time for the needs of the community; whoever may build it. The positive side is that we sre finally becoming more decentralized and it will lead to better value in the long run.
