Can Steemit Discover My Real Identity? - Day 0

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

Greetings Steemit community,

Welcome to a game and social experiment designed to grow Steemit by drawing awareness and new users, promoting connections between Steemit and other platforms, and exploring how blockchain technologies like Steemit impact our offline lives- maybe we'll even discover a critical security issue to fix or a new use case along the way, who knows?

All you have to do is discover my real, offline identity by asking a daily Yes-or-No question.

Sound impossible? Relax, you have a whole year.

Why Play? (Bounty)

Playing not only helps grow Steemit, it earns bounties for those who contribute the most to the search and for whoever ultimately discovers my offline identity.

As of this post, this is a brand new account with 0 account value. At the end of one year or when my true name is guessed, whichever comes first, a bounty based on all earnings this account makes from posts will be transferred to the member who correctly guesses my name.

Day 0: Correct guess bounty earns 100% account value

Day 365: Correct guess bounty earns 50% account value

In other words, each day my identity is not correctly identified the bounty declines by .14% of the account value.

Bounties extend far beyond only the final correct guesser though, since each day upvoted comments will determine the question I answer. The better the research members do and the questions members suggest, the more votes and higher bounties members can earn.

How to Play? (Rules)

The Steemit community has one calendar year- beginning UTC 20:00 September 26th, 2017 and ending UTC 20:00 September 26, 2018- to properly identify my offline identity.

Each and every day I will add a response to the valid question comment with the highest number of votes made on the previous day's post. For example, the comment I respond to tomorrow will be the highest voted comment (in number of votes) on this post at the time I respond. This is to promote an equal playing field, encouraging new participants to join Steemit as part of the game. It also prevents any concerns about the voting system being gamed by any single community member with an unfair advantage (not sure how this would happen, but just in case). In the event of a tie in number of votes, the first tiebreaker is the chronological order of comments (earlier wins), and the second tiebreaker the highest payout. In the rare event of a tie for all three criteria, a random number generator will select the winning comment.

In addition to responding to 1 question comment, I will respond to the top 3 highest rated name guesses. Same rules apply for name guesses in terms of tie breakers.

Yes-or-No questions can be suggested in the form of comments made to each post. Only top level comments with one question that can be answered with Yes-or-No will be valid. Comments replying to other comments, comments with multiple questions, or comments with questions that can't be answered with 'Yes' or 'No' will NOT be eligible for an answer. Full name guesses can also be made in the form of comments made to each post. They must appear as separate comments and must also be top level (not nested) comments. Only top level comments with ONE full name (first and last) guess will be valid.

Please do not combine question comments and name guess comments, to make both post two separate comments.

At the end of one year, if my name has still not been guessed, the community will vote to decide if the game should continue at 50% bounty, or if not, which member(s) should receive the bounty.

I reserve the right to vary the timing of my posts each day within a few hours, to allow for personal schedule changes.

Concerns?

If you're worried about my intentions with the bounty, please keep a few things in mind:

  • It is my own best interest to grow the Steemit community by acting with integrity
  • Furthermore, the bounty structure is such that it is in my own best interest to act with integrity (lies or conflicting answers will quickly turn people away from this game)
  • If this experiment succeeds, it is in my own best interest to eventually be discovered and reveal my identity
  • If this experiment fails, it is largely irrelevant/non-detrimental to the community if I try to be an a**hole
  • If I am discovered and try to be an a**hole, my crime will by definition not be anonymous
  • If I am not discovered and try to be an a**hole, I will have to live with that (in addition to all the above ways I would be sabotaging my own interests)

Current Bounty & Previous Questions

Current Bounty: 100% account value.

This is the bounty earned by the correct guesser if name is correctly guessed in this posts' comments.

For future posts this section will contain a full list of previously asked questions and their responses.

Join the Challenge, Earn your Rewards

Post a comment below stating a Yes-or-No question and/or a name guess you'd like me to answer to start narrowing down the options.  Tomorrow I will post the answer to the question stated in the comment which receives the highest number of votes.

Sincerely,

X

Question:
Is your current timezone UTC+1 or less? (UTC+1 to UTC-12)

Sounds like an interesting challenge, let's have fun solving it :)

Can one person post more than one question per day?

It depends on the rules of the thread owner, but I don't see a problem. If you have 2 valid questions then they would both get upvoted. If it is just poor it should not get votes. If you spam 50 questions a day people will likely start ignoring them all.

Sure, post as many as you like in separate comments, though only one question will 'win' per day

Nice to meet you, @guessmyname! Welcome to the Steemit Community, wish you good luck and a good start, ive send you a small tip and followed you, hope you have an amazing day! :)

welcome to steemit @guessmyname
following you now . :D
follow me back pls . :)

Do you live in the United States of America ?

It would be better to ask a broader question e.g. Left side of atlantic or right.

Left/Right is not a valid question cause it is not a Yes/No question.

that's why I asked for the timezone :) (UTC+1 or less)

if yes, this would restrict this to everything west of europe (+ GB and parts of africa)

EDIT: https://www.timeanddate.com/time/map/ for reference

If you ask do you reside on land to the left side of the atlantic, it is yes/no. Where the one answer implies the other. It is trivial to convert these types of two examples to yes no questions. I was just pointing out that no would mean you include the rest of the world. It would be better to start zoning him off. That is follow up with northern or southern hemisphere. Use large land areas such as Europe, Asia and start pinning his location down. Then ask general job related questions. Is your main profession highly numeric, which includes accountants, mathematicians, programmers etc

"Full name guesses can also be made in the form of comments made to each post. Only top level comments with one full name (first and last) will be valid."

really, so the right answer won`t count if it has not the most upvotes?
good luck with that!

If you have another abuse limiting mechanism I'm all ears, but otherwise you could just spam comments of guesses- there needs to be some community consensus no?

How about Top 5% comments with the restrictions: Top 1 if less than 20 comments, top 10 if more than 200 comments (note: the values can be altered, might also be something like top 5 / 100 comments, not sure what would match this kind of challenge the best).

this could optionally be further restricted/improved by a rule like "only count comments with at least 1 vote" count, or something like "at least x% votes of top 1" (e.g. if top 1 has 50 votes, and at least 20% of the votes are needed, then only the top 5% comments with more than 10 votes are accepted)

this would scale a bit but still require a high enough participation to exclude simple bots.

I think a function of # of account followers rather than # of comments makes more sense. If tied to comments you could theoretically spam comments to allow a higher number of non-spam guesses

you're right.

also we might restrict it further to either a question or a set of guesses (e.g. you post 1 comment with text "guesses", which can be upvoted and all the guesses are replied to it, so that either a question is top voted, or that guess collection)

that way the account value / bounty would get even bigger as well

Limit the total guesses to some reasonable number like the top 10. If there is not enough upvotes on the guesses pick the first ten by submission date. That way people can pick which questions are most important. Keep track of which questions you have answered in your posts as well please

I totaly understand the problem with spam comments. But if somebody has the right answer, He/she is right.
Maybe if you limit the amount of guesses. Like 10 per day for names and 10 for questions. It will be more structured. They can choose between these 10 questions, highest will win. And if the name is correct, but it will take time, then it is one out of 10 but still the right.
Other questions and guesses will be ignored/deleted? So nobody has to read tons of comments.

I hope I could help, the idea is good 😊
Good luck

I think it would be a bit unfair to him to answer 10 questions a day, maybe something like 3, but names should have a high number, such as 15 - 20. The reasoning is that you can formulate questions that cover large areas, but names are very specific. Too many questions a day narrows him down too quickly

Yes i know, that's why I wrote 10 questions per day to ask and they can vote for and the highest voted will be answered.😉

So we meant the same😊

Have a nice day.

These are all good suggestions, thank you for your input. Based on your feedback I have updated the rules (edited in the above post and will be referenced in today's post).

To summarize though, each day I will respond to highest voted question AND the top 3 highest voted name guesses. I gave it some thought, and I think it makes sense to try to number of name guesses allowed per day to some function of the number of followers.

10, for now at least since we don't know if this will grow even, is a bit much. This account doesn't even have 10 followers.
