There are many ways to gain more followers on this platform. The first thing I will tell you is to not limit yourself to Steemit.com. There are other frontends with their own respective communities. You may find active Steemians who might like your work by hanging out in those territories.

Find your niche. Blogging is not for everyone. You could be the artsy type, or someone who enjoys programming. The point is that there are dapps and communities for those. Find those groups and start interacting.

Now I am finished with the generic answer, here is a summary of what you could do to gain more followers:

1. Genuine interactions with other Steemians while creating worthy content

This is self-explanatory. There is no reason to follow anyone if you do not enjoy their content. Overtime, you could build a strong organic following who support you.

2. Interaction with VIPs on the blockchain

You could make many friends fast, and/or many enemies at the same time. Add political implications to your social interactions and you could soon moon! Or crash, depending on how you handle it.

3. Power up like madness

Get a big wallet and you might soon find yourself with random follows and strange wallet memos. People will beg for your attention and comment with impersonal compliments. That is, until you stop upvoting them.

4. Create your own followers

If someone could create a vote farm with 20,000 accounts in it, you could pretend you are popular. Get some RC or abuse some STINC faucets today!

5. Beg

We have all seen them. I am not mean enough to include a screenshot of some newbie here. The success rate of that is unknown. It most likely correlates with the number of accounts participating in a voting ring.

6. Fake your identity

Pretend you are someone else a bit more famous than you and you might dupe people long enough before the bust. I do not recommend this approach because that negative reputation would be close by.

7. Use some promotional services

I am unsure if HF20 killed off these phantom followers, or I have collected them all. At one point, each time you bid to a bot, some random inactive account would follow you each time. In my case, I am almost certain that comprises most of my followers.

8. Conduct some off-chain deals

If someone could buy subscribers on YouTube, it should come as no surprise that it would also be a thing on Steem. If it makes you feel good, go for it.
