Top 3 things that get attention on Steemit
1. Well-thought out and well-researched articles and OC
Like: https://steemit.com/technology/@sauravrungta/are-organ-transplants-going-to-be-obsolete
Or: https://steemit.com/science/@trumpman/giant-isopods-aliens-of-the-deep
Include some pictures to be extra attention-grabby.
2. Contests
Everyone likes to win, and everyone likes to play. Participate in a contest or make one up yourself. Contests include writing, drawing, art, photography, guessing, predicting, you name it, there's probably someone giving away SBD for you to do it.
Contests are some of the highest-rated (and top-dollar) posts on Steem.

Or: https://steemit.com/constrainedwriting/@svashta/constrained-writing-contest-9-and-winners-of-8
A contest to help new users? Why the hell not. Play away, folks.
3. Anything about crypto, but especially Bitcoin and STEEM.

Basically just drop the words STEEM, bitcoin, blockchain, or cryptocurrency with a clickbaity headline and you'll do well. Steemians love the circlejerk.
guess the third point is not so surprising given that the Steemit platform is rather unknown in the mainstream and most of its early adopters are some how interested in cryptos / blockchain in the first place
Yeah, my thinking exactly!
