A number of writers at Steemit have begun discussing about Smart Media Token (SMT) which has been launched by Ned Scott @ned recently. This post will briefly describe what SMT is and how it will develop Steemit.

Yes, I have not talked about the possibility of third parties entering the Steemit ecosystem, for example by creating a new token based on SMT. I prefer to see SMT as an opportunity for developing Steemit itself.

Why? In my opinion, one of the problems that continues to be fussed by many steemians is the low quality of Steemit contents. Garbage posts and comments are still scattered. Indeed @cheetah and @steemcleaners continue to struggle to sweep the garbages but it seems that Steemit's own rules allow it to happen. One of them is the user is allowed to use bots. On the one hand, bots do help steemians who make certain projects to improve the quality of Steemit content. But, in the hands of speculators, bots are an effective way to "mine" Steem.

SMT is one way out for this.

What is Smart Media Tokens (SMTs)?

Simply put, SMT is a token protocol in Steem that allows anyone, an individual or a company, publishes any token. For example, the Indonesian Steemit Community may creates a token of KoinIndo or the Steemit Budaya community to make KoinBudaya and trade their tokens in the crypto currency market.

But, if it is only for trading, similar programs have been offered by some popular content protocols, such as ERC-20 Ethereum.

What distinguishes SMT from other token protocols is that the protocol is a derivative of the Steem protocol.

From the description it is clear that SMT is derived from Steem. The rules are exactly like Steemit. SMT will also use the "upvote" as reward mechanism for content creators. So if anyone is still worried about SMT, get rid of that worry because anyone who later uses SMT is actually developing Steem to another platform.

Steemians have actually used this SMT model when using the apps in Steemit, like Busy and Esteem.

So, how to use SMT? For example, Mark Zuckerberg uses SMT for Facebook under the name FaceToken. When that happens, just imagine it like you post something in Busy. How SMT Works

The SMT website describes SMT as a new way for publishers to monetize their content and online communities based on blockchain technology. SMT "allows publishers to create tokens that help monetize content and grow communities" by:

• Tokens enable publishers to create mutually beneficial community based economic incentives to drive platform growth.
• Smart tokens with near instant settlement and zero transaction fees opens up new non-advertising business models.
• Publishers can also use the tokens to fundraise via an ‘Initial Coin Offering’ (ICO)

These are the advantages SMT offers to entrepreneurs who intend to enter the blockchain-based media business. It also reaffirms Steemit's basic principles that have been applied to Steemit.

Proof of Brain

Like Steemit, SMT moves in two interconnected spheres: content with rewards and crypto currency. Bitcoin and Etherum only move in the second. The former is an essential feature of Steemit. To walk in these two domains, Steem introduces the so-called Proof of Brain.

In the previous article, I've described what is the Proof of Work (Read: Apa Itu Blockchain dan Apa Gunanya di Steemit?). In essence, Proof of Work is a mechanism in blockchain that rewards nodes that solve complicated mathematical puzzles for blockchain. Bitcoin and Etherum use this mechanism and those who obtain tokens are the ones who successfully "mine" tokens for blockchain.

Proof of Brain is a breakthrough made by Steem. This is a token system that rewards users as long as they contribute value to the network. Steem blockchain's tokens distribute among content creators, witnesses, and curators. For content creators and curators, Steem Blue Paper writes:

The users who produce content are adding value to the network by creating material that will drive new users to the platform, as well as keep the existing users engaged and entertained. This aids in distributing the currency to a wider set of users and increases the network effect. The users who take the time to evaluate and vote on content are playing an important role in distributing the currency to the users who are adding the most value. The blockchain rewards are both relative to their value based on the collective wisdom of the crowd collected through the stake-weighted voting system.

So content creators and curators are deemed worthy of rewards if they add value to the network. Users who just write low valued content and curators that give upvote to the low valued posts does not add anything to this system. Enterprises which use SMT are duly subject to this system if they want their token have more value.

As with Steemit, SMT also has all the features available in Steemit, such as Steem Power delegation, bandwidth limits, and so on. Why? Unlike ERC20 on Ethereum, which allows entrepreneurs to independently run their tokens and regardless of Ethereum, SMT works only when Steem runs in the background. In this way, Steem maintains its performance and protects itself from over-exploitation of the network.

That is, the emergence of SMT will not damage the Steem system, as some authors fear. In contrast, SMT is actually a way of inviting new investors and entrepreneurs to develop Steem according to their business. If this is the case, I do not worry if many entrepreneurs jumped into Steem through SMT. Instead I see a bright future for Steemit as the value of the Steem token will get stronger and number of users and quality of contents increases.

SMT Implementation Model

The main advantage of SMT for entrepreneurs is that entrepreneurs do not have to think about how to increase their token value, as new tokens do by ICO. Steem system has handle it. Entrepreneurs jus stay focused on two things:

• How to build a new platform or program that benefits their company.
• How to develop a community that supports the program to achieve their targets.

There are many ways of using SMT. The ready-made platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, for example, can use SMT widgets. They just insert a code that allows users to give "$" by using "Like" to some posts. For entrepreneurs or institutions that want to build a new platform, SMT can be directly integrated into their platform.

Theater groups, for example, can use SMT to raise funds. Teater Petak Rumbia lead by @emongnovaostia can issue a special token to fund its show or sell tickets that can be purchased with the token. Humanitarian agencies such as Red Cross can issue exclusive tokens for anyone who give contributions.

Thus, many business models can use SMT. Some examples of its application have actually occurred in Steemit but without specificity because it still uses Steem.

Steemit with Premium Content

SMT, as the name implies, is actually intended for the development of media business, although it can also be used for other business model. Well, related to media business, I propose a program that will encourage the improvement of content quality in Steemit .

I dream of someday being able to read highly qualified articles and news in Steemit. I am tired of reading trending and hot topic in Steemit whose contents do not enrich my knowledge. This happens because the list of trending and hot topic is based on the greatest voting value. As a result, users will use many bots and large self-voting to appear on the top list. This damages Steemit because the front page of Steemit.com does not reflect the diversity and quality of Steemit contents. In fact, @teamsteemit posts had never been on the top list. It is an irony for Steemit. Other apps, such as @busy and @dtube, also do not offer anything new because they just move this front page to their platform.

SMT opens opportunities to improve it. I imagine there are entrepreneurs or developers who create special tokens for a digital magazine. Suppose the name is PremiumSteem. PremiumSteem magazine offers premium content because of its quality contents. They designed a front page whose contents only list their own contents.

How can this be realized? As a business, PremiumSteem will be managed by a team of editors and hire professional content creators who will produce the best contents. A qualified editor is a professional curator who has special mission and vision.

PremiumSteem may "buy" good articles on Steemit to add to their platform. This is easy to do because their platform is connected to Steem. What's so hard to get permission from the author to republish the article by sending a number of Steem to the author's wallet.

PremiumSteem magazine can also turn into various platforms. It can be printed or publish it's contents to other online media. Imagine that the best PremiumSteem articles appear in the digital edition of New York Times.

Like Steemit, PremiumSteem readers can also vote and comment on articles they like. This provides additional benefits for authors and becomes a form of interaction between the author and the reader — a form that becomes the uniqueness of online media. Other advantage is that readers who comment can also collect tokens.

PremiumSteem magazine can be sold to the wider community outside Steemit community. People can subscribe by paying them using PremiumSteem token. In this way PremiumSteem actually adds many users to Steemit because every reader must have a Steemit account.

In its actual form, let's compare it with Go-Jek. In Go-Jek app there is Go-Point. Each time you use Go-Jek services, you get reward points. After collecting many points, you can use them in Go-Point to get discounts to subscribe to magazines or digital newspapers, shopping clothing, or playing a paid online game.

Go-Jek points are actually similar to Steem token but not based on blockchain. PremiumSteem magazine can work that way. Readers can subscribe using the PremiumSteem token. Reader can obtain tokens by either purchasing PremiumSteem tokens directly or using their token in their Steemit wallets that are converted to PremiumSteem tokens.

In this way, PremiumSteem will improve quality of Steemit's content while benefiting from its content business. When this happens, Steemit users will have a home that offers great contents.

I hope there are entrepreneurs who read this proposal and develop SMT-based content business.

Menuju Steemit dengan Konten Premium

Sejumlah penulis di Steemit sudah mulai membahas Smart Media Token (SMT) atau token media pintar, yang belum lama ini diluncurkan oleh Ned Scott @ned. Tulisan ini akan mengurai secara ringkas apa itu SMT dan bagaimana pengembangannya bagi Steemit.

Ya, saya belum bicara lebih jauh soal kemungkinan pihak ketiga masuk ke dalam ekosistem Steemit, misalnya dengan menciptakan token baru berdasarkan SMT. Saya lebih melihat SMT sebagai peluang bagi pengembangan Steemit sendiri.

Mengapa? Menurut saya, salah satu masalah yang terus diributkan banyak steemian adalah mutu konten Steemit yang masih rendah. Pos dan komentar sampah masih berserakan. Memang @cheetah dan @steemcleaners terus berjuang untuk menyapu sampah-sampah itu tapi tampaknya aturan main Steemit sendiri yang memungkinkan hal itu terjadi. Salah satunya adalah user diijinkan menggunakan bot. Di satu sisi, bot memang membantu steemian yang membuat projek-projek tertentu untuk meningkatkan kualitas konten Steemit. Tapi, di tangan para spekulan, bot adalah cara efektif untuk "menambang" Steem.

SMT adalah salah satu jalan keluar untuk ini.

Apa Itu Smart Media Tokens (SMTs) ?

Secara sederhana, SMT adalah protokol token di Steem yang memungkinkan siapa saja, individu atau perusahaan, menerbitkan token apa saja. Misalkan, Komunitas Steemit Indonesia dapat membuat token KoinIndo atau komunitas Steemit Budaya membuat KoinBudaya dan memasarkan tokennya di pasar mata uang kripto (crypto currency).

Tapi, kalau cuma memasarkannya saja, program serupa sudah ditawarkan beberapa protokol konten populer, seperti ERC-20 Ethereum.

Yang membedakan SMT dari protokol token lain adalah bahwa protokol itu merupakan turunan dari protokol Steem.

Dari uraian itu jelas tampak bahwa SMT adalah turunan dari Steem. Aturan mainnya sama persis dengan Steemit. SMT akan juga menggunakan mekanisme "upvote" sebagai reward bagi kreator konten. Jadi, kalau ada yang masih khawatir soal SMT, singkirkan kekhawatiran itu karena siapa pun yang nanti menggunakan SMT sebetulnya ia sedang mengembangkan Steem ke platform lain tapi dengan sistem yang sama.

Tanpa sadar para steemian sebetulnya sudah memakai model SMT ini ketika memakai app di Steemit, seperti Busy dan Esteem.

Jadi, bagaimana nantinya kalau ada yang memakai SMT? Misalkan, Mark Zuckerberg memakai SMT untuk Facebook dengan nama FaceToken. Bila itu terjadi, bayangkan saja seperti kamu pos di Busy. Ya, setiap tulisanmu di Facebook akan dapat diberi "upvote" dalam bentuk FaceToken oleh user lain. Sepekan kemudian, nilai FaceToken yang kau peroleh akan masuk ke dalam dompet (wallet)-mu. Seperti SBD dan Steem, FaceToken juga dapat kau perdagangkan di pasar mata uang kripto atau kau cairkan untuk membeli es krim atau mudik Lebaran.

Cara Kerja SMT

Situs web SMT memaparkan bahwa SMT adalah cara baru bagi penerbit untuk memonetisasi (mengubah menjadi uang) konten dan komunitas online-nya berdasarkan teknologi blockchain. SMT "memungkinkan penerbit untuk membuat token yang membantu memonetisasi konten dan menumbuhkan komunitas" dengan cara:

• Token memungkinkan penerbit membuat komunitas yang saling menguntungkan berdasarkan insentif ekonomi untuk mendorong pertumbuhan platform.
• Token pintar dengan transaksi hampir instan dan biaya nol membuka kemungkinan lahirnya model bisnis non-iklan baru.
• Penerbit juga dapat menggunakan token untuk menggalang dana lewat "penawaran perdana" (initial coin offering/ICO).

Itulah keuntungan-keuntungan yang ditawarkan SMT bagi para pengusaha yang berniat masuk ke bisnis media berbasis blockchain. Hal itu juga menegaskan kembali prinsip dasar Steem yang selama ini diterapkan pada Steemit.

Proof of Brain

Seperti Steemit, SMT bergerak dalam dua ranah yang saling berhubungan: konten dengan reward dan crypto currency. Bitcoin dan Etherum hanya bergerak di ranah terakhir. Ranah pertama adalah ciri esensial dari Steemit. Untuk berjalan di dua ranah ini, Steem memperkenalkan apa yang disebut Proof of Brain.

Dalam artikel terdahulu, saya sudah memaparkan apa itu Proof of Work (Baca: Apa Itu Blockchain dan Apa Gunanya di Steemit?). Intinya, Proof of Work adalah mekanisme di blockchain yang memberikan reward kepada komputer (node) yang berhasil memecahkan teka-teki matematika yang rumit untuk menjadi kode di blockchain. Bitcoin dan Etherum menggunakan mekanisme ini sehingga yang memperoleh token adalah orang-orang yang berhasil "menambang" token untuk blockchain.

Proof of Brain adalah terobosan yang dilakukan Steem. Ini adalah sistem token yang memberi reward kepada user sejauh mereka menyumbang nilai kepada jaringan. Token yang diperoleh blockchain Steem disebari kepada para kreator konten, witness, dan kurator. Khusus untuk kreator konten dan kurator, Steem Blue Paper menulis:

Jadi, kreator konten dan kurator dianggap pantas mendapat reward bila mereka memberi nilai tambah bagi jaringan. User yang cuma asal menulis dan kurator (user yang memberi upvote) yang memberi upvote kepada artikel yang tak bermutu tidak menambah apa-apa kepada sistem ini. SMT pun sepatutnya tunduk pada sistem ini bila ingin tokennya punya nilai lebih.

Seperti pada Steemit, SMT juga memiliki semua fitur yang ada di Steemit, seperti delegasi Steem Power, batas bandwith sesuai kapasitas Steem Power, dan sebagainya. Mengapa demikian? Tidak seperti ERC20 pada Ethereum, yang memungkinkan pengusaha menjalankan tokennya secara mandiri dan terlepas dari Ethereum, SMT dapat berjalan hanya bila Steem bekerja di latar belakang. Dengan cara ini, Steem mempertahankan kinerjanya dan melindungi dirinya dari eksploitasi berlebihan terhadap jaringan.

Artinya, munculnya SMT tidak akan merusak sistem Steem, seperti yang dikhawatirkan beberapa penulis. Sebaliknya, SMT sebetulnya adalah cara @ned mengundang investor dan pengusaha baru untuk mengembangkan Steem sesuai bisnis mereka. Bila hal ini yang terjadi, saya tak khawatir bila banyak pengusaha terjun ke Steem melalui SMT. Malah saya melihat masa depan yang cerah pada Steemit karena nilai token Steem akan makin kuat, jumlah user makin banyak dan mutu konten bertambah.

Model Penerapan SMT

Keuntungan utama SMT bagi pengusaha adalah bahwa para pengusaha tak perlu memikirkan cara meningkatkan nilai tokennya, seperti yang dilakukan beberapa token yang baru ICO. Perkara itu sudah ditangani sistem Steem. Pengusaha tinggal berfokus pada dua hal:

• Bagaimana membangun platform atau program baru yang memberi keuntungan bagi perusahaannya.
• Bagaimana mengembangkan komunitas yang mendukung programnya mencapai target yang diinginkan.

Banyak cara pemakaian SMT. Platform yang sudah jadi, seperti Facebook dan Twitter, misalkan, dapat memanfaatkan SMT widget. Contohnya, mereka tinggal menyisipkan kode yang memungkinkan user memberi "$" dengan memberi "Like" pada pos user lain. Bagi pengusaha atau lembaga yang ingin membangun platform baru, SMT dapat langsung diintegrasikan ke dalam platform tersebut.

Kelompok teater, misalkan, dapat menggunakan SMT untuk menggalang dana. Teater Petak Rumbia pimpinan @emongnovaostia dapat menerbitkan token khusus untuk mendanai pertunjukannya atau menjual tiket yang dapat dibeli dengan token tersebut. Lembaga kemanusiaan seperti Palang Merah dapat menerbitkan token eksklusif yang dapat diberikan kepada siapa saja yang memberi sumbangan kepada mereka.

Jadi, ada banyak kemungkina luas dalam pemanfaatan SMT. Beberapa contoh penerapannya sebenarnya sudah terjadi di Steemit tapi tanpa kekhususan karena masih menggunakan Steem.

Steemit dengan Konten Premium

SMT, seperti namanya, sebenarnya ditujukan untuk pengembangan bisnis media, meski dapat juga dimanfaatkan untuk bentuk bisnis lain. Nah, terkait dengan bisnis media ini, saya mengusulkan suatu program yang akan mendorong peningkatan kualitas konten Steemit.

Saya memimpikan suatu hari nanti akan dapat membaca artikel dan berita yang sangat bermutu di Steemit. Saya sudah bosan membaca trending dan hot topic di Steemit yang isinya tidak memperkaya pengetahuan saya. Ini terjadi karena daftar trending dan hot topic itu berdasarkan nilai voting terbesar. Akibatnya, para user yang ingin artikelnya menonjol akan memanfaatkan bot yang banyak dan self-voting yang besar agar muncul di daftar teratas. Hal ini merusak Steemit karena halaman depan Steemit.com sama sekali tak mencerminkan keragaman dan mutu konten Steemit. Bahkan, tulisan @teamsteemit pun belum pernah masuk daftar teratas. Ini ironi bagi Steemit. App lain, seperti @busy dan @dtube, juga tak menawarkan hal baru karena hanya memindahkan front page ini ke platform mereka.

SMT membuka peluang untuk memperbaiki hal tersebut. Saya membayangkan ada pengusaha atau developer yang membuat token khusus untuk majalah digital mereka. Misalkan, namanya PremiumSteem. Majalah PremiumSteem ini menawarkan konten premium karena isinya yang bermutu. Ia merancang front page yang isinya hanya daftar konten mereka sendiri.

Bagaimana ini bisa diwujudkan? Sebagai bisnis, PremiumSteem akan dikelola suatu tim redaksi dan menyewa penulis dan kreator konten profesional yang akan memproduksi konten terbaik. Redaksi yang mumpuni adalah kurator profesional yang punya misi dan visi tertentu.

PremiumSteem dapat saja "membeli" artikel bermutu di Steemit untuk ditambahkan ke platform mereka. Hal ini mudah dilakukan karena platform mereka terkoneksi ke Steem. Apa susahnya meminta izin kepada penulis untuk mempublikasikan kembali artikelnya dengan mengirim sejumlah Steem ke dompet sang penulis.

Majalah PremiumSteem dapat pula bermain di berbagai platform. Dia bisa dicetak dengan harga tertentu atau bekerja sama dengan media online lain untuk memajang kontennya. Bayangkanlah bila artikel-artikel terbaik PremiumSteem juga tampil di edisi digital New York Times.

Seperti Steemit, pembaca PremiumSteem juga dapat memberi voting dan komentar pada artikel yang mereka sukai. Hal ini memberi keuntungan tambahan bagi para penulis dan menjadi bentuk interaksi antara penulis dan pembaca--suatu bentuk yang menjadi kekhasan media online. Kelebihannya, karena berbasis Steem, maka pembaca yang berkomentar pun juga bisa mengumpulkan token.

Majalah PremiumSteem ini dapat dijual ke masyarakat luas di luar komunitas Steemit. Pembaca dapat berlangganan dengan membayarnya dengan memakai token PremiumSteem. Dengan cara ini pula PremiumSteem sebenarnya menambah banyak user Steemit karena setiap pembaca harus memiliki akun Steemit.

Dalam bentuk nyatanya, mari kita bandingkan dengan Go-Jek. Dalam aplikasi Go-Jek ada Go-Poin. Setiap anda memakai jasa Go-Jek, maka anda mendapat hadiah poin. Bila sudah terkumpul banyak, poin ini dapat Anda pakai di Go-Poin untuk mendapat diskon untuk berlangganan majalah atau koran digital, belanja pakaian, atau main game online berbayar.

Poin Go-Jek ini sebetulnya mirip token Steem tapi tidak berbasis blockchain. Majalah PremiumSteem dapat bekerja seperti itu. Pembaca dapat berlangganan dengan memakai token PremiumSteem. Token itu dapat diperoleh pembaca dengan membeli token PremiumSteem secara langsung atau memakai token dari dompet Steemit mereka yang dikonversi ke token PremiumSteem.

Dengan cara ini, PremiumSteem akan mendorong peningkatan kualitas konten Steemit sekaligus menarik keuntungan dari bisnis kontennya. Bila ini terjadi, pengguna Steemit akan punya rumah yang benar-benar menawarkan konten bermutu.

Saya harap ada pengusaha yang membaca proposal ini dan mengembangkan bisnis konten berbasis SMT.
